This show was a disappointment to say the least. And I had high hopes for it. One, there was no pre-history for the show, like how did cavemen and i guess women survive all these years. Two, where were the so called cave women and children, didn't see any. Three, way too many commercial breaks, one every five to six minutes. Like I said, I had high exspectations for this show, but was sorely disappointed.

The pilot episode was better than the original pre-air pilot, they got rid of the fiancee and turned her into girlfriend, her gun toting texas father is gone, the retarded caveman roomate has had a makeover, and the hatred of the weather(cave)man has become a love. That being said it may be a bad show, but plenty of bad shows have gone on for years (seinfeld, friends, buffy, et cetera). And the quote is "Keep your penis in your genus" (you know the level right above 'species'", maybe the joke will make more sense now.

I watched a few minutes of this just to see how awful it was. I heard the disturbing sentence as "Keep your penis in your genus." That disturbed me on several levels. First there is the basic, creepy awfulness of the statement. Second - cavemen and modern humans are in the same genus! I guess there just wasn't any way to rhyme 'species' with a suggestive portion of one's anatomy (unless knees are your fetish).

Didn't see the show (however, I would have tuned in as part of train-wreck compulsiveness), but I would bet that the "penis" line is actually "Keep your penis in your genus". Genus is an organism classification term that refers to a group "one step broader" than species.

After reading your opinions about "Cavemen," I decided to watch the show for myself. I have to say I don't agree with you at all. The show is actually well written. "Keep your penis in your genus" works well for the theme of the first episode (notice how I spelled it correctly also). It seems you, along with some other critics, have decided to prejudge this show because of the hype it has generated prior to airing.

It's miles ahead of shows like "The Winner" and anything with Charlie Sheen in it.

I was hopeful this would be a good show because I liked the caveman commercials. But I probably like the commercials because they are short and me and my brother have an "inside" joke about them. I tuned in to the show and was very disappointed. I didn't laugh once. What a shame, there was so much potential, this could have been a funny show and lets face it, we need a new funny show on tv as everything on now is overplayed, overrun and lacks any new material (I often find myself watching a so called new show and thinking, haven't I seen this before?). It's bad enough that they advertise Poise Pads so much, but then they went on and had a scene where she laughs so hard taht you can see on her face the moment she pees her pants. I don't understand the negativity. This show is actually not that bad.

In fact, in a sense, it's science fiction that happens to be funny.

The only reason that it SciFi is because all other hominid species are now extinct. If they had not died out, they might still be with us which is the premise of the show.

I DID like a couple of the commericals early on in the series - with one particular actor. They guy who complains to the network and is featured with the "talking heads" and also at the airport going past yet another print ad after he had lodged his complaints about the ads. I thought he carried off the concept really well - his reactions were...well..amusing, if not "ha ha" funny.

But he seemed to disappear once they decided to make a sitcom. Did he run for the exit knowing it would flop? Or did they not offer him a role. Whatever. When they started promoting other "cavemen", especially the guy with Talia Shire as his shrink, it was just terrible. Who wants whiney, angsty characters...cavemen or otherwise? Ugh.

Not so sure it was the Flintstones he was thinking of. They at least lasted more than a season, and had kid appeal. The other show, It's About Time, tanked in it's first season, even after retooling.

I don't even like the caveman commercials. I do think the gekko is at least cute, but I don't want to see him in a sitcom either. I really think the TV people have forgotten how to make a watchable sitcom.

I love the show. I'm no fan of commercials in general, but if I have to watch them they can at least be amusing. I guess I have become endeared to the characters, perhaps it's a subconcious thing.

So I gave the show a chance and found that the cavemen have made a successful jump from the 30 second spot to a 30 minute show. The cavemen just "feel" the same to me, and I will continue watching.

Unfortunately every show I love gets cancelled pretty quickly (like Firefly), so I would expect no less of Cavemen. Especially after reading the opinions here.

Let me offer a dissenting view: this show was pretty funny. Now for those of you who find the commercials 'mildly funny,' then we're not going to agree. I find the commercials classic, and I would wager that a lot of people do, which is why they made the sitcom.

I will agree the show will need some time to build a rhythm, but I think why it can work, is that these guys are realistic to people I have known. The sardonic, grad-student buddy. The young love-sappy brother. The older, responsible and driven but conflicted guy. And of course, the tall funny guy who just shows up for the drinks and squash.

The type of interaction between them is how guys sometimes really talk. And you just don't see it very much on TV. My only hope is that they don't make the show all about how the 'real people' react to them, or what 'girls' think of them.

In the spirit of say a Napoleon Dynamite, they should stick to their guns and just do whatever the hell they want and let the public basically ignore them. (Like in the commercials..the source of the funniness)

Cody, I think in the 80's there was a marketing campaign with a figure named Max Headroom that appeared in video's then had a (short lived) t.v. show. But as the writer points out, there have been a lot of skits, SNL, MAD Tv and such were movies or t.v. series were derived from the short skit and failed in longer versions. Guess I'm in the minority because while it certainly wasn't the best or funniest sitcom I've seen, I thought it was alright.
From the reviews offered by the critic's I thought it was going to suck but IMO it was a lot better than that new over-hyped unfunny newsroom sitcom with Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton.
I think the concept of the show--using the cavemen as a sort of parable for present day race relations-- is a good one-- but I got the feeling from watching the 1st episode that the writers/producers were afraid of pushing it too far and having it be considered offensive so they played it safe and went for the cheap laugh instead.

I thought this show was the greatest show in the history of television. It was as if God had looked directly into my eyes and told me that I was his most prized creation. That's how good this show was. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and watch it. And when you're done, if you have TIVO or DVR, rewind it, and watch it again.
The incredable acting ability of the cavemen is second only to "Balkei" on the TV show "Perfect Strangers" and its plot line is as intriguing as an episode of "Saved by the Bell". Its an amazing program and will surely be around for years and years and years to come.

I've had both episodes on in the background now. I watched for the train-wreck interest and by the first commercial I was up making dinner. The second episode, I realized I had laundry to fold, a door to fix, and the dogs needed another walk. These activities got me through most of Carpooling or what ever that is that comes on at 8:30 and gets me through to the Dancing with the Stars. I say "Keep them on!" at least I'll get a lot of work done at the house in that hour this way. I sure as heck won't be actually watching the TV.

The producers and execs of ABC, in their infinite, holier-than-thou attitude did NOT include the original actors in the pilot project - mistake, BIG mistake, because the new guys couldn't find funny if it was right in front of them. Yes, there was a TV show derived from commercials (battery advertisements I believe) in the late 80's. It featured the annoying Aussie who constantly belted out "OY" after every heroic or tense action sequence (as he did in the cheesy commercials). Honestly, is everyone really trashing this show? So it's not fabulous, but it's fairly amusing, doesn't take itself to seriously, isn't yet another overdone loser (pun definatly intended) reality-TV show, and fills the great void of crap TV that is tuesdays nights (Boston Legal excluded of course). I give the network credit for picking an excellent time slot and putting out there a 4 (on a 10 scale) against all the other crap that's 2-3 at best. I'd much rather see a budding farce than one more "real" person break down in tears as they are tossed aside for failing to: sing the last line correctly, they just couldn't lose that extra pound, their dancing skills stink... blah!

I didn't even bother watching, as I found the commercials to be stupid. If Phil Hartman were still alive, maybe "Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer" could've made it, but trying to make a not-even amusing commercial into a 30 minute sitcom is ridiculous.

I didn't watch it. I watch NCIS. I refuse to watch it, as the writers have insulted my family name.
But, I Predict:
With everyone saying this new show is a bust...with everyone throwing this baby out with the bath water...it will probably be on the air for decades. The networks hate to be proven wrong by the lowly viewers.
In 30 years, people will be saying,
"Gee, I wish they'd make another 'Caveman'. TV has just gone to pot."

horrible, awful, detestable, i can't think of words strong enough to convey the true "badness" of this show. I caught a sense (in the two minutes i watched) of something "40-year-old Virgin"-ish only without the wit, pace, comedy or likeable characters. I think a show based on the "Pet Rock" of the 70's would be easier to sit through, at least the rock wouldn't try any dialogue.

I haven't seen the show but what I don't get is why people here seem to hate a show with an interesting and unusual premise so much when the same-o same-o "look how stupid the father of this family is and how the wife holds all the cards" type deal that's been done a million times before is left alone.

I'm not saying Caveman's premise is original per se (What is?) but rather that it's influenced by more idiosyncratic (and less done to death) predecessors than many network shows.

I might give the show a look if it's around another week, just for curiosity's sake. I liked "Dinosaurs" back in the early 1990s, so maybe another prehistoric-like sitcom will be worth a look.

I started to hate the Gecko commericials after he became a diva.

The caveman commericials really stinks. I can't ponder how they would develop a show based on the characters. It reminds me of "I audition for the Planet of the Apes" but didn't make it.

I can understand that sometimes it's hard to get inspiration for a tv show; there are plenty of bad ones out there that prove this but the fact that someone thought that it would be a good idea to base a tv show off of any commercial boggles my mind. Frankly, I think the critics should be grateful that they didn't have to watch it.
As for the quote about keeping it in the genus, get the facts right. "Caveman" is used to refer to Neanderthal or Cro-Magnon man. The first is homo neanderthalensis (though there are some who think it should actually be homo sapiens neanderthalensis) and the second is an early homo sapiens... either way it is the same genus if not the same species!

I didn't watch the show, But I hate the Gecko.HATE IT First it didn't talk, tolerable. And then it did talk with some Crocadile Dundee/Cockney accent,endlessly about itself, in it seemed every other commercial aired. WHY? I've seen the gecko commercials from the beginning, and I do know the gecko has talked from day one. If I remember, the first commercial was the gecko complaining that everyone's calling him by mistake, and holds a press conference to ask them to stop. I also remember his original voice sounded more like David Hyde Pierce (from "Frasier"), though I've never found out if it's him. The only gecko commercial I can really remember him not talking is where he (on a computer) and the company manager do the Robot (probably my favorite gecko one).

It's rather disturbing to see everyone focusing on the word genius/genus, considering that the I and the U keys are literally right next to each other on the keyboard, it isn't exactly hard to believe a typo could happen... He was among the most high rated shows last season!! It's like someone took a stupid pill..and wala...George Lopez is gone, & the apes are in! Well, guess what, we have stopped watching most of the shows on ABC!
