They also seem to run birth control pill ads non-stop, and those are just about as stupid. Considering that CBS and FOX recently refused to air a condom ad that showed condoms "merely as birth control and NOT for disease prevention," one has to wonder about the standards which determine appropriate advertising.

As for one poster's comment about insurance companies not covering birth control pills while rushing to cover ED meds, this was explained to me (by an insurance professional) as being rationalized by the fact that ED is an illness so treatment should be covered by health insurance; the ability to get pregnant is part of being a woman rather than an illness, so it not up to the companies to help women prevent that. If that doesn't make you want to scream, I don't know what will.

Viva Viagra?

re: "not as bad as "Smiling Bob" ... I have little doubt it's because they treat two of the most important maladies of our time, erection problems and thinning hair. That is, they're the most important if you consider the opinions of the "sufferers", and consider the likelyhood that the relevant advertising is what convinced them to hold that opinion. It is intersting to note these products are for, and targeted towards men. While breast and female reproductive probme sdo receive attention, it's not nearly that of these products, and they are almost invariably prescription only. There's something economically and culturally inequal and unfair about this. What's more it illustrates the general sense of inferiority among men, whether inherent, advertising induced, or at least the matter preying on a tendency towards the former. This male-targeting marketing tendency is only the mindset that produces these inevitable, unsettling results.

Viva Viagra?

This is one of the creepiest, oddest commercials I've ever seen. The whole concept of a bunch of middle-aged guys sitting around a bar singing about their ED drug is just ridiculous. I think the "Viva Viagra" refrain is especially absurd. Due to the trauma caused by surgery, the drug is used to help restore some blood flow to your penis, a preventative measure to help restore "normal" circulation. The effects of prostate cancer surgery can take 18-24 months for even partial recovery, and this drug provides therapeutic value. Without it, erections are virtually impossible, and it's possible that atrophy of the penis could occur if you don't maintain a Viagra regimen. And yes, I'm speaking from experience.

Viva Viagra?

Lois M, Ft. I am sick of the constant awareness of how much money pharmaceutical companies are spending on ads to a public who don't even have the option of choosing and picking them off a shelf - HELLO?!?! A doctor must prescribe them and it should be up to only him or her exactly what drug you may need to treat your ED, high cholesterol, allergies, dry eye, or whatever else ails you. Do you realize drug companies spend more in marketing than they do in R&D? Then they justify the price of meds by saying they're so expensive to develop. What BS. All this advertising should be illegal and the money the drug companies spend should be used to offset the hideous price of drugs in this country.

Viva Viagra?

It's embarrassingly awful, and I'm not even talking about the subject matter. It just makes me cringe how cheesy it is. Does somebody really think guys relate to that little "jam session"? Ya sure, real guys act like that all time. And then you listen to the lyrics and it just makes it that much worse. I change the channel or mute.

Viva Viagra?

The add is effective as an add for many reasons; no disagreements there.

However, I find something bothersome about this add. In this commercial we see a bunch of "buddies" gathered in a dusty bar, hangin out bragging about whats most important to them, sex with thier significant female partners. It subtly portrays men as being insensitive and having only about three things on thier mind, hanging out with "buddies" in a bar, thinking/bragging about sex, and driving away in thier pickup/motorcycle. It's degrading to men and insulting to our intelligence. Does sitting in dusty bar, bragging about the sex you have or are going to have, and then driving away in your pickup/motorcycle make you a man? Any guy who gets sucked into this fantasy that this comercial portrays is really shallow if these are what he sees as the most important things in his life because that is what every other "real" guy is like.

Viva Viagra?

me and my wife laugh about the young men taking viagra i thought it was for oldmen on medication. but the young just kept up with the old folks. ha ha bet you the gays love this with the men folks wishing they were there.

Viva Viagra?

I saw a dead lizard outside the house last week. The setting couldn't be any more far-fetched. I mean, is that a bar, or one of those oh-so-common abandoned Wild West saloons, or just the new Our Gang Clubhouse? ('I know, fellas - we'll put on a show!'). The actors/men look ridiculous - like someone told them to play 'dress-up' in whatever costume they think MANLY MEN look like. And the song (insert 'rolling eyes' here) ... the song utterly sucks. The message is 'don't worry ladies - your man will get it back up AND be more faithful to boot'! As if the two have anything to do with each other (sorry, but cheaters cheat for psychological reasons - it has nothing to do with Y chromosomes or hormones or drug imbalances).

Plus, I'm surprised no one has mentioned the most creepy line of the whole "song": "Now this lonesome toad is just sick of the road - I can't wait - I can't wait to go home ..." Whaaa? "Loansome Toad"? As in 'Horney Toad'? Hahahaha! And what exactly is he "sick" of - all the groupies? 'Yeah, I've f***** enough strange women - time to be faithful to my wife!' Or is "sick" in reference to some communicable disease this jackass has picked up in his many travels? Hey! Great idea: Have this Viagra dude also star in that herpes ad!! The two drugs can cross reference each other in their spots, taking advantage of market synergies, and thus achieve even greater commercial penetration (pun TOTALLY intended).

Or we - as a society - could just stop being such sheep and demand that the government go back to BANNING THESE ADS. Nothing you buy that requires a prescription should be subject to the same level of inane hawking as soap. If it requires a doctors say-so, it requires a deeper level of consideration than a 30 sec jingle - even the best - could ever provide.

Viva Viagra?

I hate this commercial more than anything currently on TV. This scenario would never happen in a million years in real life...a multi-cultural bunch of middle aged dudes hanging out in some off-the-beaten-path roadhouse having one heck of a time jamming with other while basically singing "long live my boner medicine".

I cringe every time I hear this. Thanks Pfizer for ruining one of the better Elvis songs.

Viva Viagra?

There seem to be no restrictions on when ED commercials are aired. What we are going to have in the next few months are a bunch of five year olds singing "Vivaaaaaaaaaaaaa Viiiii agra." And I thought the Iraq war was awful.

Viva Viagra?

I don't think I heard of that commercial.
