It’s no secret that many automakers have been struggling of late. Perhaps the biggest sign of these woes was the recent split of DaimlerChrysler, the much-vaunted, but ultimately failed, marriage between the makers of Mercedes and Chrysler cars.

What makes me want to buy a car or any product is true quality and value for the money spent. BMWs definitely fall into that category and they are great looking cars as well. I love driving them. I have never had a BMW that did not deliever 30+ MPG at today's highway speeds. I am also a fan of Honda and Toyota products and would never discourage someone from owning them. On the flip side, BMWs are expensive to maintain, but you do not pay till after the free maintenance for the first 50K miles. Average that in for the first 100/150K and it is probably a wash, costwise and a savings compared to MB. I suspect that Ken's friends who are driving BMW loaners are not doing it for quality issues, but while their vehicles are getting free dealer maintenance. And I also suspect that the ad was directed more at Daimler and VW than any other parent company, the German mind at work if you will.
And as a matter of disclosure, my current 2 vehicles are a 330 Ci and a Pathfinder SE.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

Bmw's are reliable ... since i got my driver's licence in germany i wheezed in one , and have always since. They are wonderful driving cars that can be expensive to maintain. I currently drive an 07 Ford Fusion that equals the foreign competition in reliability and provides a very good driving experience. This is nothing more than an advertising ploy as BMW is a parent company for other auto companies (Mini Cooper). Be intelligent consumers and shop the market across different companies and model lines if you are not about the prestige factor you can fine a fine quality auto that is comparable in real world driving to many higher level name plates. I will put my Fusion with heated seats, leather, moonroof & power everything up against a 3 series BMW any day. There is not a "real world" 20,000.00 dollar diffence between these cars if you take out the prestige factor.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

Parent companies can be positive in pushing forward new technologies. Toyota, for example, can use the large base of its Camry to invest in hybrid research for inclusion on Lexuses. I'm still waiting for my 6-series hybrid.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

E. Why is that?

Yes, it is true that DaimlerChrystler had a quality problem. Much of this is due to a shifting and growing economy in the European Union and the need to force cuts in the Stuttgart factory. While this forum is supposedly about intriguing advertising virtually no one has commented on whether or not the ad works. Instead, we've had individuals soapboxing for their favorite brand (Your brand here), their favorite country (America), and their favorite cause (global warming). All of those things are fine but let's stick to the task at hand. Does the ad work? The fact that we're talking about it suggests that the creative team has struck a nerve. Does it sell cars? That remains to be seen. But, it does get your attention and when an ad costs tens of thousands to produce and hundreds of thousands to run that's what matters.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

Just one word for Greg from Jefferson, MD - HONDA

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

You can't compare BMW, or really any German cars, to anything Japanese, or ::gasp:: American. Lexus *cough*, I mean Toyota, is not different from an Infiniti, umm, Nissan or an Acura, or wait, Honda. They are all the same in the fact that they are completely soulless and bland cars. I've owned, in order, American, Japanese and then German cars... never going back. For those that appreciate driving, get a BMW, Audi or Mercedes. Sure it's a little more expensive than some "common" Ford, Toyota, etc. But I'd assume buy something unique. And more importantly, I get good gas mileage, great handling, low maintenance intervals (no charge on new cars) and world-class safety all in one package. When I reach 60 years old I'm sure I'll switch to something a little more boring, and a little more bland, like a Lexus. By then I'm sure I'll match the personality of said brand name.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

This is how I fell out of appreciation of the Volvo brand - when they were purchased by Ford, Volvo became a Ford and stopped being a Volvo.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

I CANNOT AFFORD A BMW BUT I HAVE DROVE SEVERAL OF THEM OLD AND NEW. BMW has never lost sight of what their customers have come to expect, and what kind of company they are. It's been by staying relatively small and focused on a niche market that has given them success.

If you're primary concerns when looking for a vehicle are price, cushy seats, mileage, and never returning to the dealership for service/maintenence; you are not BMW's target audience. Their vehicles are driver's cars. Yes, in the past 5-6 years they've mainstreamed their approach and lost a bit of that edge, but they still leave no questions about the purpose of their cars.

Are BMW's expensive... that all depends on your perception of what qualifies as expensive. If you're comparing them to a Ford, GM, or Nissan, yes they are. But they're in line with their competition at Audi and Mercedes. The additional cost at purchase is made up when looking at the car's residual value and maintenence package.

To Al, who is willing to put his Fusion up against a 3er any day. Heated seats and a moonroof do not make a car. If that's where your priorities are - what about the interior materials, the fit/finish, and the quality of the sound system. Sit in a BMW and I think you'd agree your Fusion pales in comparison in those regards. Whether it's $20k better is up to the buyer.
Then start the car, listen to the throaty exhaust, and take a sweeping high-speed turn. If that experience doesn't sell you on the car and your car is to go from point A. to point B., then your Fusion is an excellent choice.

For a large group of BMW owners (not all, since there are always badge whores), the drive is just as important as the destination. There's no definitive answer as to whether a car's "worth it" or not. The great thing about the auto industry is there's something out there for everyone. Because a car doesn't appeal to you, doesn't mean it's without value. Just that it's values are not in line with your own.

We are extremely happy with our '06 330i and '03 Z4 roadster. Sure, the Z has its quirks (and in time the 3er will develops it's own), but I've yet to own another brand that puts a smile on my face each and every time I get into the driver's seat. To me, that makes it all worthwhile.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

Dear Larry K, Waupaca, WI,
Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works, Munchen,(Munich)
Sadly you are probably correct in that many dont know what it means.
BTW: Greed and conspicous consumption ARE good!!! Same class, similar price, similar options, same company.

On “buying American”
You’d be surprised that at the end of the day how much of a car is truly manufactured in America if you looked at the components. Of course, unless you do some research, you’ll just go on thinking all Fords were hatched in Dearborn, MI. I love hearing people so passionately want to buy American and honestly, I truly do believe in it. That’s why I bought a Honda...manufactured in Liberty City, OH.
BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

Brenda from CT hit the nail on the head! Allow me to kindly ensure that everyone knows the truth.

For one, BMW did not make engines for the WWII German government. Their factories were, however, required to produce train brakes. If you want to be against a company for Nazi ties, go with Siemens for their radio technologies or Bayer for their gas chamber efforts.
Also, BMW's are generally more fuel efficient than most other makes of comparable size. The 6 cylinder models are some of the most efficient on the planet. They have also been the original driving force behind the development of hydrogen power. Ford has just decided to copy them in every aspect, 10 years later. You'll also notice that BMW has leased out 100 hydrogen cars already. Zero emissions are about as low as they go.
I have been to BMW's SOUTH CAROLINA plant in which they build z4's and X5's, and they only employ American workers to do it. The only Germans there are management. The Spartanburg area has been turned into quite a lovely area with the flow of BMW money. Supporting Wal-Mart is the real bad idea.

Lastly, My BMW M3 just hit 200,000 miles the other day, and it still has greater reliability than most American cars. When you care for a car, it will care for you.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

I've sold Mercedes for 10 years and I'd have to say that a BMW handles better it's fun to drive andthe younger crowd loves it and they end up buying a Mercedes latter in life away. Each Jeep Liberty is fueled with B5 (5 percent biodiesel) at the factory and the program will continue with the 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel - the company's first diesel-powered full-size SUV with a new 3.0-liter Mercedes-Benz engine. Going forward, the Chrysler Group continues to look for ways to leverage the diesel expertise of its sister division, Mercedes-Benz, to bring clean-burning diesels with superior fuel economy to consumers. Today's diesel engines are up to 95 percent cleaner than the diesels of 15 years ago, and provide an average of 30 percent better fuel economy.

Chrysler also has its eye on future technologies including hybrids and fuel cells. The new two-mode hybrid system, developed with GM and BMW, leapfrogs traditional hybrid design by improving fuel economy by up to 25 percent. Chrysler Group will introduce this system with the Dodge Durango in 2008. And with more than 100 fuel cell vehicles on the road today - more than any other company - Chrysler is helping to speed the development of hydrogen-powered vehicles and promote customer familiarity. BUY AMERICAN

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

By the quick read of this blog there's clearly two sides of BMW, those that love them and others that do not.

I do not own a BMW, and could really care less eitherway about them. You don't drink wine on a beer budget. Buy your Hyundai, Fords, or Kia's, those are in your market. But when you want to eat steak, you don't settle for chuck. It's like a fancy restaurant that doesn't list prices, if you have to ask, you probably can't afford it. BMW is about an experience, a standard that frankly not many other manufacturers can meet. So if you want to continue to complain about the price, or the gas mileage - fine. Just make sure you complain about the difference in price between Smirnoff and Grey Goose - just like those, some people can't taste the difference and ignorance is bliss. It's funny reading about how folks are comparing the various intro luxury cars......by intro I mean BMW/Mercedes/Lexus/etc. cars compared to say....Bentely, Maibach, etc. 2 distinct levels of the overall luxury market.

At any rate, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, Acura, Infiniti have the various luxury bells and whistles; however, they are marketed towards different segments of the luxury market. People that really like to drive and like the handling of a sports car along with luxury will most likely choose BMW or Porsche. People that want luxury but are more value-minded will most likely choose an Asian variety. Mercedes still leads as the overall luxury standard.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

I've owned American, German and Japanese cars. We currently have a 1995 Lexus SC400, and a 2005 Lexus RX330. I want a new car to replace the SC400, but it will not break! It just keeps going and going...

Check long-term reliability - BMW and all European manufacturers do not match up to the Japanese. American cars are even more reliable than most European cars. Mercedes has absolutely horrid reliability as do the BMW 7 series.

But the European cars are hot looking. The BMW 6 series give me goose bumps... But I tend to keep cars a while, so I will continue to buy Lexus since they are the most reliable cars on the road.

I'll be glad to buy American or European cars when they conquer their reliability issues.
BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

Anyone who has said anything negative about a bmw has never owned one.....and likely can not afford one. For years, American cars were engineered like a light-bulb and they "burned out" as soon as you hit 100K miles or required major maintenance afterwards. German and Japanese cars are engineered to be "tight" and that translates to few problems and excellent driving performance - including reasonable mileage. BMW is in its own class but Acura beats it in value while offering same or better driving performance. If you "push" your car to over 100 mph, you will notice how comfortable Acura's engine sounds - and stays under 4000rpm. Redline is at 7000 rpm. I have no idea how fast this car can go :) BMW can do the same, no question.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

I live in the Virgin Islands and drive a 1989 3251 with 143,000 miles. That's the reality of it. Good or bad, they convince people that they need what they can offer. BMW's lack of focus in this arena is surprising, maybe people aren't willing to pay the additional $$ for the x-drive that the offer in some models.

The VW/Audi partnership ensures better technology in VW and lower global supply costs for both. Driven lots of cars over the years. MY first BMW a 1974 2002 bought used in 1982 from a friend, had 100,000 Miles when I bought it. I drove it another 150,000 miles before I sold it. Never left me stranded, and just great fun to drive!

We bought a 325it wagon about a year ago, actually my beautiful wife bought for my (??th birthday). Like others have said previously, it just puts a smile on my face when I get in it. It just feels right! The car is solid. The inline 6 cylinder is silky smooth and during long trips the gas mileage avgs 29 Mph.

I had oportunity to drive a new Toyota Camry some weeks ago and I guess I had withdrawl pains from the Bimmer, as I liken the Camry driving experience to driving a "Toaster" for lack of a better way to describe it.

Maybe the Asian Makes are More Reliable, I don't know! What I do know, mine is extremely reliable, and dealer servicing of the car they take care of you.

I believe this - Be Good To Her and She Will be Good To You!

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

i don't think that bmw's position is valid. I think chrysler likely benefited from the arrangement while they were with mercedes via financial infusion as well as being able to pool the engineering resources of both companies to improve the cars that chrysler put out. I think ford had a similar beneficial impact when it took over chrysler. Jaguar was famous for breaking down prior to ford ownership. Now they have improved alot in this area, thanks to ford. with bmw, i know some people like their cars but i don't really understand what the attraction is to that make. my parents have had many different high end cars to include mercedes, cadillac, bmw, volvo, lincoln and others. i drive them all and see how well they hold up. the bmw is probably the worst of all those brands. even the larger models are more cramped inside than some of the above brands. Also the price is high and so is the maintenance. i recall one time a year or so back, a 4 year old bmw they had needed over $7000 worth of maintenance/repairs within a three month period, which wasn't covered under warranty. so to me, if the car is expensive, its not particularly comfortable, it requires frequent and costly maintenane, in my opinion, its junk. on top of that the styling of it is not immediatley distinctive. unless your fairly close to it and look right at it, it can be mistaken for a Honda or similar. it doesn't look like anything to me. As i said, i cannot see why anyone would want a bmw based on the ones i have driven. a ordinary chevrolet is more comfortable for everyday driving around.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

I have a '92 525i that will be 16yrs old in Sep. It has the best stereo system (Bose 440 watt 9 speaker with 12 inch sub, all from factory) in any car I have ever been in. It has over 300 horsepower (northstarV8) and gets 28 MPG on the highway with A/C on. I have spent less then a grand on maintains and repairs since I bought it 60,000 miles ago (excluding tires). It only requires oil changes every 8 to 12 thousand miles. It has the original plugs, belts and hoses. Its fast, handles well, and has a great build quality. I agree about the unions being a joke, but I still love the way an American V8 sounds from my well padded leather seat. I have already spent more money on service for the 3 Series than I have over the entire life of the 5 Series. And I recently have had some service needs on the 5 Series but on July 9, 2007 was told by Athens (GA) BMW that BMW NO LONGER PROVIDES SERVICE ON CARS OLDER THAN 10 YEARS. The reason? NO TECHNICIAN TRAINING AVAILABLE FROM BMW. I had called the Athens dealer only because my dealer - Nalley BMW of Decatur, GA - had also failed to service the car. Why not trade my 5 Series in on a nice new one? First, the new ones get WORSE GAS MILEAGE THAN the 1990 model. Second, there is LESS ROOM IN THE INTERIOR OF THE NEW MODEL (in both the driver's area and the back seat.) Third, the stereo system in the new models can't compare to the old model (I realize that sound evaluation is subjective, but this is my confirmed opinion. I think it has to do with the shape of the smaller cabin.) Lastly, based on the significant and costly problems with the 3 Series, why would I buy any new BMW?

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

A Ford model "A" truck from the 1920s with a 6 cylnder engine got about 14 MPG, a guy near my farm has one so this is verified my 2007 Dodge 1500 with a 6 cylnder engine gets 19 MPG. has anything really changed in 90 years?

The 100 MPG car has never arived and never will, not even from BMW. The formula is the energey in a gallon of gas, minus the waste of a internal combustion engine (90-70%), friction with air and road and then the mass of the car. Based on that a person sitting on a engine at 70 MPH (motorcycle) might get 85 MPG.

With that in mind we might need to rethink everything in the Automotive world. Why can't we make better, cooler cars than the germans and japs? My ford literally fell apart, and when I went to the dealer, they did NOT want to help me. I felt like i was asking them a big friggin favor to order me a new gas tank because the one i had was so corroded it was leaking gas! If i want boring, i'll get a Camry. The explorer hasn't changed since it first came out over 10 years ago. A catchy name and edgy marketing isn't going to sell your cars if they don't strike any emotion in the publics eye. I think people are going to see what they want to see. If they think BMW is the best then you're wasting your time arguing with them. The inverse is true as well.

As for my own personal experience, I had an '86 325es when I was in college. I bought it with 200,000 miles and put another 75,000 on it. I did have to put some money into it, but if you think you can own a car anymore (regardless of brand) and not spend money on it at some point, you're either very lucky, foolish, or just plain mistaken. All in all, I'd recommend one to a friend, as mine was driving just as strong @ 275K miles as it did when I bought it.

BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

My 2001 Z-3 was a gift from my husband(now that's a fun car to drive) we also have a 2000 LHS Chrysler with 160,000 plus, and a Nissan Versa for our daughter. I been driving Chevrolets since 1985, with exception of one Nissan, which was a huge disappointment. I got rid of my 96 Lumina after 180,000 miles and 10 years because my wife was ready for a new car. I purchased an 06 Trailblazer and an 07 Impala. I will never buy anything but Chevrolet again.
