We’ve heard a lot of talk lately about how young people in this country want to feel inspired. The makers of Cheetos apparently think that they want to be inspired to do mean things to other people.

I thought that one was funny, only because no one was hurt and there was no property damage; the only damage they caused was to the poor woman's psyche, since she'll probably obsessively puzzle over the meaning behind the whole thing until she ends up sobbing in the fetal position, but that's all in good fun, isn't it?

Anyway... I didn't exactly laugh out loud at the random acts of meanness, like the laundromat ad, even though we all want to do something like that from time to time. Most of us, however, simply exert our frustrations through aggressive behavior in traffic, behavior in which we would never engage when face to face with another person. Unless, perhaps, we're armed with a shopping cart. Man, it was funny when, as an adult, I watched my mom nearly ram another lady with her shopping cart and then mutter, "Well, then get out of the damn way." But I digress.

If only I had a bag of Cheetos within reach... I'm itching to stuff them up someone's nose in the worst way.

Random acts of meanness

With all the ways to sell a product Cheetos had to choose this. Slate's Ad Report Card tackled these ads back in March and reported "According to Cheetos brand manager Tyler Reeves, a full 60 percent of all Cheetos consumption is by adults."

With Cheetos being perceived as a child's junk food, eating them becomes something that adults want to do - but shouldn't do - like putting cheesey snacks in someone's laundry. The ads make eating Cheetos a "safe" trangression for adults - something you aren't supposed to be doing, but CAN do, without anyone getting hurt.

We all want to do things we know we shouldn't, and there's a certain trill in trangression, Cheetos is hoping to use this to their advantage.

Random acts of meanness

its not cool to be mean to people who are different chester ;(

Random acts of meanness

Those that find these asinine ads funny are simple-minded. Your next story can be about the death of competent journalism. It's a commercial, not aimed at the GTA audience (as much as all out of touch people like to use this reference to seem like they're not so dreadfully unaware) but to the overwhelmingly strong viral video market. In case you haven't noticed, a stale commercial of a Ford truck driving over mountainous terrain isn't garnering very much interest, whereas the newer idea--that speaks strongly to its target audience--is getting a lot more. And when was the last time you ate Cheetos? Maybe you ought to consider that you were NOT the target audience, and it does a hell of a job reaching the intended viewers. After the day I had today, I really needed to LMAO. The intro clip (where the guy goes over the rules) is classic. Every time it starts over, it's different. Every single iteration had me laughing so hard and so loud, I feared I would draw a crowd to my cubicle. In watching all of the OU video clips featured in the intro, I found none that were really offensive; rather, those in question simply just failed to be funny. Filling the guy's office with Cheetos? How can anything so unrealistic even begin to be taken as "mean"? The guy smearing Cheetos on the $83,000 painting? That was hilarious and really well-done from a comedic standpoint. The painting was obviously something created in 2 minutes, 10 minutes bfore they filmed. It would be a whole different story if someone taped their friends sneaking under the ropes at a museum and grinding Cheeto dust on a priceless Van Gogh. *That* would be malicious, offensive, cruel, and desctructive...and definitely not something to glorify. None of the clips I watched glorified vandalism in any way. It was all just silly. These clips I watched, I assume, were just the homemade uploads, and not the actual commercials running on TV. I am going to frequent the OU home page, not to pick up tips on how to vandalize one of my co-workers' cubes, but just to put me in a good mood and prepare me for the stress that lies ahead...

Random acts of meanness

I should qualify my previous post by saying I don't own a TV. Most of us have to deal with the small evils every day, and these commercials glamorize behavior that actually hurts people. Certainly society coarsens over time, but like the guys who think it's funny to beat up homeless people, or their rivals at school, there is a limit. Most people of any age would put that limit at property damage and actual emotional pain. Who could that possibly be funny to?

Random acts of meanness

I'm amazed at how determined some people are to live in a sterile world of total political correctness. What indication have you ever seen that the general public is in any way sophisticated in its thinking and critically evaluates the comedic styling of advertising? They numbly gaze at the phosphorescence and have their behavior and attitudes subtly modified by the messages they (choose to) receive. Any communicated idea that is not debunked, refuted, or rebutted is ACCEPTED. While the advertisers are paid to make an impression that will influence the snack-buying public to purchase a particular product, the method they choose also teaches and reinforces lessons on acceptable actions, attitudes, and behaviors, and a lot of what is currently being taight as acceptable (because no one speaks out against it) IS NOT!!!

Yet another symptom of out degenerating society and our trending away from civility (which is NOT a bad word, by the way).

Random acts of meanness

I think that these commercials are teaching children that it is okay to be mean and pull mean pranks on others. These commercials are going against what most parents want. We are trying to teach our children that it is wrong to be mean and hateful to others.

Random acts of meanness

Hope they are ready for lawsuits when kids start getting out of control and actually hurt someone.

My son is highly contact allergic to dairy and thereby cheetos cheetos up his nose could literally kill him. Thanks frito lay for helping the millions of american families with Life threatening food allergies.

Random acts of meanness

The ads are not funny and is leading to the ruining of America. I am glad you reported on this. I am going to start a boycott of Cheetos.

Random acts of meanness

Junk food, junk ad, junk ethics, junk morals. Perfect combination! This whould be why I am NOT a cheat-oh's consumer.

Random acts of meanness

My family finds the Cheetohs ads either silly or hilarious - the same way we find old "Tom and Jerry", "Road Runner" and Warner Brothers cartoons funny. Hmmmmmm. Seems to me it's the parenting skills that have fallen by the wayside here. Personally, I (and my kids, who are in their teens) are WAAAAY more offended by the sexual content of MANY commercials these days. That said, I am one of those people that has never bought anything as a result of a commercial I saw. The idea that something like 4chan's random board or kryogeniks antics could be considered funny in any light is beyond them. Chester looks like an old man cheetah marionette. Marionettes can be a bit spooky. He's slow moving, says very little then *poof* he's gone. You are left to wonder if Chester is really there or not - Is he a mind trick of the Cheetos-eater, who visualizes their impish impulses as a 3D-creepy Chester Cheetah? Have Cheetos driven this person mad? Does the cheese in Cheetos produce hallucinations and a compulsion to commit strange acts with snack food? ;)

I don't see the commercials as a reflection of or the downfall of a polite, nice society. I just see them as advertising meant to get people talking about it and writing articles.

Let's admit, these commercials ARE effective. They get people who like it, onto their website for even more advertising and who may ultimately buy their product. They get the people who don't get it or hate it to talk and write about it - Free publicity! So what if they lose a few people who will boycott? They'll gain much more with people making their own videos and garnering more attention thru that gimmick. That IS the whole point, after all. The author has brought more attention to Cheetos. There's even a link to see the ads. Is Cheetos a sponsor of MSNBC.com or what?

Does anyone remember the 2D animated Chester Cheetah? The manic version that would run around and end up getting crushed or maimed in some way while trying to get his snack on? Think about it, are the new ads any worse? The former version of Chester acted like a drug-crazed maniac looking for his next cheesy fix. These ads were pointed directly at children and used humor, bright colors, action and loud noises for attention. I wonder tho', if children viewing live-action adults acting mischievous is more of a bad influence than a crazy cartoon character doing physically impossible acts (And surviving). As always, it's up to the parents to make sure their children do the "right" thing. If a child is learning more from TV than the parent, that's the problem. Not the ads themselves.

No matter what, I normally don't buy Cheetos, so the new advert. strategy isn't going to change my mind about the product. And I really don't feel inspired to stuff Cheetos into inappropriate places. I reserve that for Marshmallow Peeps. ;)

Random acts of meanness

Well actualy they are very funny, in fact the only thing that would make them better is to add an add of the boys from "OCC" Orange County Choppers doing something with the Cheetos.

Random acts of meanness

it seems that Mike Judge's Idiocracy is being achieved a few hundred years sooner than anticipated.

Random acts of meanness

So let's see-It's ok for rich people to fly airlines and not poor? I seriously hope that they are not people on the planet over the gage of college frat-boys who would even entertain the notion of doing anything so stupid.
Two-Television is juyst like radio-;if you don't like the content, change the channel.
Three-Obvously the ccommercials are working, because of the response they are garnering here and I am sure on the OU website.
Four-Chester Cheetah is a cool icon for a spiral nottebook cover for your ten year old. I don't know anyone that would emulate the behaviour or actually take advice from an ad-based cartoon chracter selling puffs of air ccovered in orange powdered chemicals.
And, Five-Cheetos has abbout thh same(or less) nutritional value as the Pastureized Processed Cheese Food (made with 10% petroleum-yes, like the stuff that goes in your car) that Kraft Foods passes off as "Cheese" to millions of Americans and their unfortunate kids.

You are what you eat.

Random acts of meanness

You gotta admit, the "Orange Underground" is LAME, but the home-made video of the cheetos getting loose and chewing off the guy's head...GENIUS.

Random acts of meanness

I'd like to know where I can see the Cheetos commercial with the Native American/Immersion Program theme. Not many people would get it I suppose, but those who know what it means will enjoy it greatly. My husband went to the store and bought a few bags after the commercial caught his attention with a Social Consciousness
