Boost gets (armpit hair) in your face

In a recent ad for Boost Mobile, a man and a woman are heading down a sunny street on a bicycle built for two, her in front and him in back.

The setup is giving her a clear view of the street ahead, and him a face full of her flowing armpit hair.

"You think this is wrong?" she says, lifting her arm to give the viewer a better look at the under-arm mane. "It’s a little gift from Mother Nature. I’ll tell you what’s wrong – it’s cell phone companies charging hidden fees."

Boost Mobile

The image of several feet of armpit hair is clearly going to get people’s attention -- if only to make them point at the screen and say, "Eww!" But after grossing people out, it’s not clear how exactly it’s supposed to start getting people to think about cell phone plans.

For one thing, of course people in commercials don’t talk like people in real life, but still, it’s hard to make the logical leap from defending one’s armpit hair to discussing hidden mobile phone fees.

We might have understood the logic a bit better if the company were selling something vaguely related to personal hygiene, or if the dialogue didn’t offer quite as stark of a non sequitur.

As it stands, the woman comes off sounding less like a pitchwoman and more like a vaguely crazy-looking person who you might run into while walking down the street, and who you would naturally try desperately to avoid making eye contact with.

This ad fails miserably because I couldn't have begun to tell you what company it was for. I was so grossed out by it that I changed the channel the first time I saw it and have avoided it ever since. There's silly fun, and then there's just plain stupid.
I agree with most.  I have seen the ad numerous times and had no idea who/what is trying to be sold - until I caught this thread. I think there was something about mother nature in there somewhere and I have no idea what that has to do with phone service.

Poorly done ad, I would not buy service just because of it.

Kind of reminds me of the long gone ad for Quiznos,  those disgusting little things with rotten teeth squawking - I couldn't eat there for years.
I had no idea that ad was for a cell phone. makes me wanna vomit when I see it.
UH, I'M 32. I'M IN THEIR TARGET DEMO. I WAS REPULSED.
I had no idea what this ad was for until I read this. It is the most disgusting ad I think I've ever seen. I also fast forward or switch channels when these gross and unnecessary ads come on. I've never even heard of Boost before this.
lol!!!!! Now thats flippin funny!
Even my 6 year old son thinks this commercial is gross !
I thought Boost was a supplemental drink for diabetics or older folks.  After watching the ad several times, I still fail to see the humor.  Now I will not buy any product with "Boost" in its name or ad.  I change the channel as quickly as I can when it comes on and discontinue watching the program that was on before the ad came on.  No, I am not in the target demographic but those I know who are, say it totally grosses them out too.  What are we teaching our children?  Are we teaching them that it is acceptable in the academic or business world to be gross?  I know being gross is unacceptable.
Another SHOCK AD, that's all. Not for any sensible ppl here of course.
it's just gross!
Might be funny in Europe but not in the US. Gross to say the least. Boost Mobile sucks.
I like the ad. It's a whole lot better than watching another Budweiser "drinkability" ad.
I've never watched the ad closely enough to realize it was armpit hair flowing behind her! I'll look closer next time. the only questions you should ask yourself when the commercial is done are, what was the product, what was the company. if you can remember both, the ad worked.
I'd rather see the guy's ... and smell those pits too.
Cell Phone Companies are all over-charging sc*m-b*gs ... with my apologies to the sc*m-b*gs.
Can't wait until we all drop our plans, go to Pay-As-You-Go, and watch the sc*m-b*gs go out of business.
Classic commercial!!! Just like another poster said, it reminded me of the SmartBeep pager commercial when the girl farted in the van. People grossed out for what reason?  You see grosser stuff on reality t.v.
I find it funny that Americans think the entire female population on the planet shaves their armpits. Just think a couple hundred years ago, they didn't. Some females in Europe don't shave, nor do some in Africa, or Asia. The hair is also obviously fake.

I think the only good comments came from the people who mentioned us having no problems looking at eviscerated, burnt, mutilated, or otherwise deformed body parts yet get grossed out over fake hair. The other one was about how no one complains about fat, hairy, stinky, overweight men (who are walking heart attacks).
Get over yourselves.
The ad is tasteless, repulsive and revolting! I have no idea as to what the company behind this spot was thinking! Absolutely, positively gross!

This ads has changed my view point i will never opt to go for such thing from this...
After Seeing that. I'm starting a small business braiding overly long under arm hair for women. Go Natural! and have it braided by me
I'm sick to begin with. I was shocked and laughed allot. the only problem is after the commerical was over I had no idea what the commerical was for because I was so transfixed on her armpit hair.
Shocking, gross, repulsive, absurd to the extreme.......and yes, funny too.  Hmmmm....turds are gifts from Mother Nature but we don't actually see them in ads....yet.  This is probably aimed at the South Park crowd who found Mr. Hanky sickening and hysterical at the same time.  Personally I can' stand the non-stop drug ads that spend 10 sec. on how great they are for you and 5 min. on all the side effects.  They should be banned. I'm 51 and I got this ad and laughed.  PS.....No one has commented on how S-L-O-W they are going for how fast they are peddling.
I saw this commercial and immediately thought "this is going to be on ads of the weird"  It is disgusting and I would never use their product because of it.
I like hairy women. :)  Keep it real Boost Mobile
After the initial "shock" I thought the ad was funny and a clever way to grab my attention and make me remember the pitch. Brilliant!
I give kudos to the person that brainstormed the orginal concept and storyboard of this hilarious ad! It is refreshing to see an ad can draw so much attention to its product without the usual selling of sex, yet creating sensationalism without crossing into the dark zone of the unmentionable. If you're grossed out with this ad, you obviously have never dated any French girls, because as stated by a 10 year old in the movie Home Alone, "French girls don't shave their pits!"
Thank god they weren't headed to the beach in their swimsuits!
Boost is our direct competition--I work for MetroPCS.  Let them go ahead with gross commercials!!
Almost everyone seems disgusted, but you all watched it and that was the goal.  Plus, it did make sense.  Listen to what she says about hidden fees being annoying while her pit-hair is blowing in his face.  It's humorously ironic, which is what they were shooting for.  Low budget, big response.  Smart.
Coming from a person in the marketing industry, this ad campaign obviously worked. The purpose of this campaign is not to have the consumers wondering where the link between armpit hair and cell phones is, but to have people talking about the commercial and company in general. This news article is free advertising for the company in itself. As odd and "tasteless" as the commercial might be, it is obviously effective. Welcome to corporate America.
Great ad, and although armpit hair is only natural, some don't seem to accept their own bodies. Maybe they need psychotherapy? Dunno.
Whats the big deal? I used to live in Eugene, Or. and half of the "progressive feminists" had armpit hair at least that long!! The only difference is that they tie-died their pits and macromayed it to hold their pot bongs!
I'm not sure which is more disgusting, this ad or the one with the coroner performing an autopsy while
eating a breakfast burrito. My take on Boost is that
if they aren't smart enought to see that some Marketing Company ripped them off big time, how good
can their phone service be?
Hilarious!!! But, I have to admit, the first time, I laughed and actually told people about it but couldn't remember what the product was. Th secondtime I saw it, I laughed again but could only remember it was some kind of cell phone ad. It caught my intrest, but then I am a commercial junkie!  I actually think this was a great idea. Who cares if it takes a few times to figure out the product?  Every time you watch it it really catches your attention and you notice everything eventually!!  Two thumbs up!!
I don't find this ad as offensive (just stupid) as the light and fit yogurt commercial with the woman collapsing a yogurt cup on her face. I am sure the ad company would never dream of putting a man in the same spot. That ad is just evil.
The ad is silly, borderline offensive and completely random in a faux-youtube kind of way. In other words it's a pretty close approximation of the kinds of things I (and many others) spend time watching on the Interwebs. If that's not your thing, this ad probably wasn't designed with you in mind.
I for one love both the ad and armpit hair on women. in fact in my humble opinion there is nothing sexier. Yum.
I thought the add was halarious. I felt sorry for the guy in the back catching all the hair in his face, but the point was that as sick as this may seem, so are hissen charges. People. Would it have been better if she used aqua net?
Ok people get with it. Just like the commercials with super stars(Jermaine Dupri, Young Jeezy, & Mikki Valentine, Big Pun)WHERE YA AT!!! with the cherp.. Dahh same company.
The demo target is between 18 and 24. And it seems that none of the comments are coming from that group. this is 2009, clever is the name of the game.. And that commercial alone has boost(no pun intended) sales for that company.

Want to talk repulsive? How about those godaddy.com ads where the woman rips off her clothes and steps up on top of the cubicle.

I thought the boost ad was funny, lighten up people. So sick you can't be the product? Stop being so dramatic.
I think it is terrific...as you are all saying, "this is so wrong!"  That's exactly what I thought when seeing the ad.  But then I wanted to know...what could be as wrong as that pit hair hitting the poor guy in the face.  Hidden charges on my cell phone...yeah that is really wrong too!  Boost doesn't target the middle-aged, they target the teens/college group.  Even if you can't make the connection, they can and that is what is most important!
I think its funny!  It beats the weird Verizon ad with the "stalker" showing up everywhere with his mob of freakazoids!
Advertising agencies need to hire some "normal" people to view these ads and get opinions before they are aired.  I think any Company who would air such a stupid commercial is showing what they think of the American intelligence.
My question is.....after 4 years of college in journalism, did you ever think your day would be consumed writing an article about armpit hair?
Did you know that Clark Gable shaved his armpits?
Come on people the ad is hilarious. You guys need to calm down & stop being so uptight! It's a commercial for crying out loud - how stupid do you have to be to get your panties in a wad over a COMMERCIAL?!
I find the ad disgusting, gross and totally unacceptable for airing on national television.  I would definitely not purchase what ever product it were pushing!
Worst commercial ever....absolutely disgusting!
Is it my imagination, or is the girl Rebecca Demornay?
I find this ad disgusting, and while the ad in itself is memorable, it's hard to connect it to any specific company, and therefore I don't see how it can be helping them ... only hurting, because of the gross-out factor.  The only commercial I've seen that's had me more grossed out was the one with the coroner and the burrito, which come to think of it I believe is also a Boost ad!  And that made me actually *pause* my television to let the nausea subside, before going on with my show ...

I'm in the target demographic, and I also tend to prefer a prepaid plan anyway, since I have enough bills as it is.  But this just makes me want to avoid Boost, and stick with the larger, more established companies like Verizon (my current) ... at least they're not making me lose my dinner!

Obscure only really works well if you're already a big enough name that flashing it once sticks, like with Geico, for instance ... but I'm not an ad exec, what do I know?
Big deal, only in America are people 'trained' into how the human body, both male and female 'should' look rather than what we do look like. America is so anal and puritanical about everything, get over it and get real!
