Boost gets (armpit hair) in your face

In a recent ad for Boost Mobile, a man and a woman are heading down a sunny street on a bicycle built for two, her in front and him in back.

The setup is giving her a clear view of the street ahead, and him a face full of her flowing armpit hair.

"You think this is wrong?" she says, lifting her arm to give the viewer a better look at the under-arm mane. "It’s a little gift from Mother Nature. I’ll tell you what’s wrong – it’s cell phone companies charging hidden fees."

Boost Mobile

The image of several feet of armpit hair is clearly going to get people’s attention -- if only to make them point at the screen and say, "Eww!" But after grossing people out, it’s not clear how exactly it’s supposed to start getting people to think about cell phone plans.

For one thing, of course people in commercials don’t talk like people in real life, but still, it’s hard to make the logical leap from defending one’s armpit hair to discussing hidden mobile phone fees.

We might have understood the logic a bit better if the company were selling something vaguely related to personal hygiene, or if the dialogue didn’t offer quite as stark of a non sequitur.

As it stands, the woman comes off sounding less like a pitchwoman and more like a vaguely crazy-looking person who you might run into while walking down the street, and who you would naturally try desperately to avoid making eye contact with.

Seriously, did someone pay for this campaign? Who was their demographic?
was it perhaps meant to shock therefore be talked about? doesn't work. eeeeeeeewwww is right. makes you not hear whatever the heck it is they are trying to sell.
That commercial makes me want to throw up. I can't even remember who it is for, all I remember is that hair. They should yank the hair off the air.
The ad has gotten people to think about cell phone plans and in particular Boost mobile by being so unique you wrote a news article about it!  I know when I saw this commercial for the first time I thought it was so hilarious I sent my friend a YouTube link. So, I think they know what their doing...
This is the most disgusting thing I've seen, has the world gone to nothing but trash?
this ad is disgusting.
"In-depth" analysis aside, it's hilarious...
That commercial works precisely BECAUSE it is so random and hilarious! I rewound it and watched it twice, because I was like, "what the heck was that I just saw!?"
If she wants to keep the "natural" look, she should at least ride on the back of the bike.  And why hasn't he taken a pair of scissors to it while she's sleeping?  I definitely don't associate a cell phone plan with this.
That ad is simply revolting. It actually gaged when seeing it for the 1st time. Disgusting. I flip the channel asap if it comes on.
I rarely watch TV, but have unfortunately managed to catch this commercial a few times. I think it's repulsive, I change the channel as soon as it starts, and frankly I didn't remember what they were selling until I saw this article. Now that the article has reminded me, I'll make sure never to use Boost.
Huh?  Is that what that ad is for?  I've never made it past the first 4 seconds.  With the DVR even if I am watching live TV I can jump back and pause, then skip forward so annoying ads can't annoy me.

So long odd looking, annoying woman in the Progressive Insurance store, no more Viva Viagra song, my prostate is doing fine thank you very much, and disgusting ads like this don't see the light of day.

I wish TV stations would track how many people change the channel when annoying, disgusting ads come on and learn to not even run them.
Eww! before and Eww! after. If this ad gains Boost one customer, I'd be surprised.
The only thing worse than a commercial that makes your stomach turn is one that makes your stomach turn AND makes no sense. To think that not only did someone come up with this stupid advert but someone above them ultimately green-lighted it is simultaneously perplexing and sad.
I think it was DISGUSTING ... I fast forward or change the channel whenever it is on. BAD move, cause not a woman in the WORLD would think that was cute ...
I DO NOT LIKE THIS AD...  And Would not buy or use any product or service from Boost, based on this Ad.
The ad is targeting 18 to 35 year olds and I think they get it. Boost is a pre paid cell phone offer for college/urban/early career types not ready for 2 year contracts and such. Point of the ad is that pre paid users have been "wronged" by the phone companies is unclear terms and added fees. The arm hair is just wrong, the additional fees are just wrong and Boost is going to treat customers right.
That ad is disgusting and should be taken off the air.
What crazies creatives thought this up? Maybe somebody has a fetish??!!
the phone company is for sure happy now we ARE talking about it
While I do "get" the ad, I think it is the most revolting thing on tv.  I have not once agreed with this columnist and her obtuse interpretation of ads until today.  This ad makes me want to vomit.  I actually gag when it comes on.
ok, so we see dead bodies in all states of decomposition on the uber-popular CSI shows and yet people are totally grossed out by [fake] underarm hair!   Twisted, grotesque bodies no problem; humans in their natural state=GROSS. It's just one more example of how upside-down/inside-out our society has become.
Repulsive!!!   Couldn't pay attention to what was being sold and wouldn't even think of buying anything represented by that disgusting advertising.  I turned the channel when it came on!!  Hope to never see it again.....
I'm very difficult to shock, and even harder to offend.....congrats Boost...you got me on both fronts!
I remember that sickly humorous ad, but if you hadn't told me the ad was for cell phone service, I'd never have remembered that.  All I could recall was the hair, and the poor sucker behind her. I don't even ever recall hearing about "Boost Mobile". So for me, at least, the ad missed its mark. (But perhaps now you've helped their cause, eh?)
It takes a lot to gross me out, and I can respect the whole "Hey, they're talking about us!" strategy, but this turns me off to their product completely. It's about cell phones? And she's talking about "a gift from Mother Nature"? How is this related? It's a bad ad, not just gross. BAD. I could have read which company is responsible, but I don't even want to bother. All I can see is long armpit hair.
I'm not so sure the company is happy we're talking about their ad.  For me, I'd hate to be Boost Mobile and to read something like:

I will never buy from Boost Mobile because of the commercial!

Sure, people are talking about it, but in such negative ways that it can't be good.  For the record, I will never buy from Boost Mobile because of how disgusting the commercial is.
My wife and I saw this commercial and we literally winced at how disgusting and revolting this commercial was.  It may be "memorable" but not in a good way.  Besides, we either fast forward or change the channel before we know what company this ad is for.  Now that I know it's Boost Mobile through this article, I'll make doubly sure to avoid it.
Arm pit hair is gross to us becuase in our culture, america, woman shave thier underarms.  What I find truly offensive are tv husbands who are 30-40 lbs overweight but all thier wives are practially runway thin-- whats up with that?
Ick, ewww and blech!  I could not stand that commercial.  I mean, come on, is this really the BEST way to sell cell service? Maybe a cordless razor, but come on.  The word that comes to mind is skeevy.

And, also, who is Boost Mobile?  Never heard of them before--not sure I want to be associated with them either. :(
The ad totally turned my stomach.  My wife included.  Truthfully, we looked at each other and said we would ever give Boost Mobile our business based on the ad.
I absolutely love this ad.  It is all about branding and I totally remembered boost after I saw it.  I actually posted it on my facebook page.  It is genius and I wish I worked at the agency that was able to sell this idea.
GROSS is right.  It takes a sick, sick mind to think up such a commercial.  I will never buy this cell phone service because of this ad.
my friends and i were laughing our arse's off!  yes, its nasty, but its also quite funny!
Boost Mobile has had very annoying commercials in the past.  I can't remember the exact details because I usually muted them fast.  They were much more irritating than this one, which is just funny, in my opinion.  Of course, I'm not remotely close to being their demographic anyway.
The ad may be designed as a response to those who see the commercial and think or say "that's so wrong" or "they are wrong for that". It doesn't seem to be as much about crazy armpit hair as it is about emphasizing that when you think of things or see things that seem "wrong" or crazy you should think of hidden cell phone fees.
Well,  most people who have commented on here are obviously not the target audience.  You  probably do not find this funny because you are too old for who they want as customers.  Remember not all ads are meant for everyone.  Personally Viagra commercials gross me out.  I do not like the thought of my parents making love.  It all depends on who is viewing the ad.  Don't be so mean.  It is fake!!!
Obviously, people south of the Mason-Dixon lack any form of humor (or brains)  The ad people won.  Ha!
I really don't get the connection between armpit hair and cell phone plans, but I thought it was funny and a little strange. It definitely sticks in your mind...I think that was what Boost was going for. I don't think logic was even a consideration. ^_^
For some reason, I thought Boost was some kind of deoderant.
i think this ad is hilarious!!
My old friend from Germany would be in "7th Heaven" if he were alive to view this.
I thought this ad was the funniest I'd seen since the "beard comb-over".  Not that I remember what product that one was for, either.  But I remember that it was funny!
I knew even before I clicked on this article, what commercial the "Hairy Situation" was referring to.  But until I read the article, I had NO IDEA what the product was the girl was pitching, and that's after having seen this commerical a million times.  5 Stars for gross out factor, but 0 for actually selling any product.
Kind of reminds me of the smart beep fart girl
think about it people. YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT IT!! Therefore they HAVE got your attention! And stop being such prudes and have a sense of humor for gods sake.
I thought it was very funny and I am a 47 year old woman.  Lighten up all.  I think the Viagra and ED commercials are the crude and rude ones.  The girl is funny and should be given a part in a movie.  She is a natural.
My daughter and I just looked at each other in shocked silence when we saw this ad.  I said "is that what I think it is?" and she just started laughing. This has got to be the most tasteless ad I've ever seen.
Luckily I've only been subjected to the commercial once.  Glad to finally learn what is being advertized. I'll assume the product is no better than the ad, so I won't try it.
I hope the target market: college/career types wear long sleeves to job interviews.  Nasty nasty nasty!!!!!!! Blegh!!
