Dunkin' takes aim (again) at Starbucks

With the presidential election just one week away, nothing seems to be getting Americans’ hearts racing like a new opinion poll. Perhaps wanting to get in on the action, Dunkin’ Donuts decided to commission a poll about its own high-stakes race: Dunkin’ Donuts coffee versus Starbucks coffee.

According to a commercial the donut chain made to go with its poll, the results show that: "In a national taste test, more hard-working Americans preferred the taste of Dunkin' Donuts over Starbucks."

The first question that springs to mind, of course, is: what criteria did they use, exactly, to find out whether these people were "hard-working"? And why do they have to be "hard-working" in order to judge coffee?

We have to wonder if the reference is a jab at those non-hard-working, Chardonnay-sipping, brie-eating elites who would, naturally, prefer Starbucks' hoity-toity drinks over the basic, quality cup of Joe you can get at Dunkin' Donuts. That may be a good tactic for appealing to the base, but is it really going to get the undecideds?

The commercial follows a fictional white-coated researcher as she visits one fictional hard-working American after another, interrupting their job so they can try some coffee. (Sadly, no plumber is shown drinking the Joe.) All of these faux workers like Dunkin’s coffee better, of course.

We’ve been highly amused by the increasingly competitive coffee wars, which has everyone from McDonald’s to Krispy Kreme vying to give you the best caffeine buzz. We’ve also been fans of some of Dunkin’s other attempts to take on Starbucks by making fun of its drink names and highfalutin image.

But this ad falls short of the mark.

For one thing, polls commissioned by a company itself are bound to draw a little skepticism, even when, as here, the poll is conducted by independent researchers. It doesn’t help that the ad features fake researchers and taste testers, and yet doesn’t take the tack far enough with something truly offbeat or funny. We might have been more convinced by footage of real people trying the coffee.

For another, this is a story that we’ve heard before, when Consumer Reports found that tasters preferred McDonald’s coffee to Starbucks. As the political pundits would say, maybe Dunkin’ needs to find its own narrative.

I've tried DD, SB, Burger King (yes, they have coffee), McDs and Honeydew (local to New England) Honeydew's coffee is too hot to taste. BK and McDs have decent joe, SB is always too strong tasting, but DD is just right for me. They also have surprisingly good hot chocolate at DD
I buy large bags of fair trade bean and grind it for espresso. For around $20, 5 minutes of my time, and a decent espresso machine, I can make a brew far better than SB or DD at a much lower cost with as much potency as I like.
Oh what fertile grounds (not coffee) for expressing an opinion.  The word value comes to mind when thinking about coffee consumption.  I have consumed coffee all over the world under contrasting conditions and I find that the overall taste can be affected by so many other variables too numerous to mention here.
As for Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts, I have had occasion to enjoy (or not) their respective brands.  Let's get back to value.  No one can convince me that paying upwards of $1.50 per cup is a good value.  What a wonderful way to overspend.  Since I became a senior consumer recently, I can buy McDonalds coffee for 37 cents a cup.  Do you suppose they have a huge markup on their cup offered at a regular price.  Get wise people; start brewing your own coffee for best value.  Or you can continue to subsidize those companies who "Offer great benefits", etc. which you are paying for.
Best coffee is either at the 7-11 or the guy in the street cart by my office building.
Starbucks coffee always tastes like they burnt the coffee beans while roasting them.  It's always tastes too harsh.  My whole family loves Dunkin Doughnuts coffee, and I am continuing to convert more and more family members all the time.  We love their whole bean coffee, and my wife and I truly look forward to our morning and afternoon cups.  As I write this, I realize that eveyrone is different as in entitled to their own opinion.  I have no problem with this and refuse to try to debunk someone elses opinion.  This would be ridiculous.  All I can say, is that as a long-time coffee connoisseur, I prefer Dunkin Doughnuts Whole Bean coffee over all other types of Starbuck's cofee.  I even prefer Intelligentsia, Caribou, and Wild Bean coffee over Starbucks coffee.  Again, this is my personal opinion.
Coffee is nasty, anyways. My vote goes to a tall, sweaty can of *insert brand name here* energy drink!
I've been in love with Dunkin Donuts coffee since I was in sixth grade in Boston's suburbs, when a move up from the elementary to middle school brought with it a Dunkin Donuts along my walking route.  It was a revelation at age eleven and to this day I'd rather have a "lahge coffee" than a "venti house blend blah blah blah" pretentious cup of overpriced junk.
I have to wonder what the standard for comparison was in the taste test.  Because if for example, we're comparing a "Large Regular" from each competitor, you'll get two vastly different products:  Starbucks will provide you with a bitter and overheated cup of black product with no additives, that's been sitting too long because the majority of their sales draw is for more interesting, some might say "frui-fru" offerings.  Dunkins meanwhile, will take that same order and without batting an eye, serve you up a steamy foam container of their Cream of Sugar Soup.  On both accounts, "Enjoy!"
Its pretty pathetic how heated you people are getting over flavors of coffee.... who care? Go to which ever store is closer.
Personally, I like 'Seattle's Best'. It's good coffee, well priced, not Starbucks (the Microsoft of coffee), and here's the best part: If you go into a 'Seattle's Best' shop and order a "Large coffee" no-one argues with you over terminology, they give you a regular, black, breakfast blend....cup of coffee. And if you want to be hoity-toity and order in Itallian...they've got you covered too.
Of course, Starbucks is better, here is Seattle they know how to make it right.  I was in Kentucky once and they really butchered it.  Who cares about the price, if you were in a Union like I am you could afford it.  As far as the Fair Trade Issue Starbucks could be 100% Fair Trade if they didn't have any quality standards either.  To be honest though, there probably isn't enough to provide for that.
Honestly..?
Is this really an issue?

... All I have to say...
My comments...

I don't get into big fights over Starbuck's.  I don't care if they are a monster chain, I have nothing against them, or any other monster chain.  They simply do a thing well enough to  be that big.

That being said, I do prefer the "Hey how are you oding today?" atmosphere of smaller chains.  In Colorado Springs, Pike's Perk is good, and I prefer it to Starbuck's.  In Cheyenne, I have yet to find it.  Grrr!

My absolutely favorite chain, (they do coffee better than anyone) is Caribou Coffee.  Everyone I have ever introduced to Caribou agrees that it is the best, and tops anything else.

Yes, I have had Tim Horton's.  Yes, its good.  No, its not the best.  Furthermore, they cheat.  The reason all Canadians and regular Tim Horton's drinkers are addicted is because their coffee is laced with nicotine.  It has nothing to do with the brew, and everything to do with the chemicals.
starbuck coffee is bitterest of any one.it would turn teeth black.        Mc . IS THE BEST OF  ANY COFFEE .
I just realised I actually read all of this.
I need to get a life.
I have drank both. DD use to have good coffee, Starbucks occasionally has something that is drinkable. WaWa coffee by far is the best if you are just traveling and need a cup to go and it is the same every time.
