Al Gore frees us from bad advertising

For years, many people regarded environmentalists as earnest and well-intentioned, but more likely to plant a few trees than force Americans to make substantial changes.

That all changed with former Vice President Al Gore’s documentary "An Inconvenient Truth," which mixed tough talk with just enough hope to leave people emboldened rather than defeated.

The most recent "we can solve it" ads, sponsored by Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection, take the same tack, with the same results. Watching them, we couldn’t help but feel a little manipulated, a little scared and a little hopeful. But, they got us thinking every time.

wecansolveit.org

The ads mix an urgent musical score with big words that are meant to evoke big thoughts, such as "Free us from our addiction to oil" and "Save our economy." Meanwhile, the imagery flows from the bad guys (carbon-spewing energy producers) to the good guys (clean energy) and then the rest of us (tight shots of slightly worried-looking regular people).

The entire effect is both dramatic and arresting, and it catches our eye every time it appears on television.

The Alliance for Climate Protection also does a good job, in a simple way, of tying help for the environment to other issues many people care about, including the weak economy, high gas prices and concerns about our children’s future.

The effect is bold without being too overbearing. It’s also much more effective than the group's previous ads, which showed how would-be rivals had found common ground over saving the environment -- on a couch in the middle of nowhere. Instead of making us feel hopeful, those ads just made us wonder how many carbon emissions were wasted dragging a couch, a film crew and a bunch of overly cheerful opposites into nature.

To KnSD - you are my hero.  Very well spoken indeed!  What is the harm in America setting a good example and for we citizens to save money in the process of contributing to cleaning up our planet?
John Murray, thanks for saying what the "other" scientists have been screaming since this global warming crap started - THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME THE EARTH HAS WARMED UP!!! There are fossils of tropical plants in Oregon, from, you know.... when the earth was warmer.... but you would never hear our favorite eco-terrorist Al Gore say that.

Hey Billy C. in Atlanta - Maybe you could get with John in San Diego for a few suggestions, maybe hmmm??

Hey Billy C in Atlanta - Maybe
I am not trying to say anything about China and their environment is good -- It is horrible and nasty.  No.  I have never been.  Too all of you who think I am trying to defend China -- I am not.  (FOR ROB) I am saying that if they can and do have better emission standards and can do it -- you would think it could be done here.  (Everything else may be nasty dirty crap and raped earth) ... We invented the automobile industry? Why can't we make a cleaner car?  I blame the Kyoto on all the politicians that have followed -- and Clinton's administration for not doing more.  The Kyoto protocol has problems, but it is certainly a start.  I too paid for the Al Gore commercial and support him whole-heartedly --  for those of you who do not agree, I am sorry if the TRUTH interferes with your religious beliefs or pocket book.

I love this planet and am remember the 1960s and 1970s when I could look out and see a sky of birds.  Today I have to stand outside and wait 10 minutes to see 3 fly by.  I am ashamed of what we have done to this planet and what greed and stupidity have done to it (in America or in China).  If we can send a man to the moon, I would think we could figure out how to live responsibly and in balance with what we have.  Like the credit crisis, we can't seem to live with what we have ...

I am with Jack, Nashville and Mark in Bend Oregon just above.  For Craig in Alaska ... burn your oil.  Have a great time driving around in other areas of your state this summer when you find your ground is not solid.

For Geologist in Wyoming -- yes I have taken Geology, Paleontology and Atmospheric Science and understand the earth warms and cools. I know it will warm and cool again and again ... let it.  I KNOW THERE IS NO STABLE CLIMATE.  Let it do what it should - not what nuts like Craig, in Alaska thinks is his God given right to make it do!  Have you looked at scientific data on the atmosphere?  Cooling of the stratosphere is currently out of ranges seen before and not in normal limits for the warming trend we are seeing.  This is caused by ozone destruction and excess release of carbon dioxide in the troposphere.  Global warming in the troposphere and stratospheric cooling due to ozone loss are parallel effects. Carbon dioxide release increases global warming and growth of the ozone hole. No human has the right to destroy this planet!
I do not think Global Warming necessarily means that it will be warmer all the time.  Kyle Reno here posted an article which says it has significantly cooled over the last one year.

The fact is that something is out of balance.  That unbalance creates bigger volatility and larger swings towards each extremes.  Summers are hotter, winters are colder, wind blows faster and rains harder.  More floods and more drought.  More dramatic of everything.  Reminds me the current stock market.  The single highest daily gain of 14% happened in 1930 in the middle of the great depression.

We may slip into an ice age because of global warming.

We need to work on reducing volatility by whatever means.  If that means that emit less CO2 and methane then we should do that.  It may mean other things that we do not understand yet.

Al Gore invented the internet and now he has invented Global Warming. Mr Gore's education, I have heard, is religion and law. His work experience is politics. Obviously, having no scientific background his theories about the planet come from others since he has no experience or training to develop them himself. We need an honest debate between qualified scientists and a media that will promote and publish it.
I say Ignore-The-Gore and we each set our goals to 1)buy American 2)Buy locally 3)use less 4)conserve more.
To Jack in Nashville,

Adolfh Hitler was an excellent speaker, he mislead thousands upon thousands of people. Look where he lead them. He was one of the most convincing speakers of modern history, but his motives were evil and self centered as are Al Gore's.

These so called facts you printed here, must be directly from Al's speech. There is no scientific proof of what you say.

Al Gore's first big lie was there was a hole in the ozone, when he realized that lie would never be believable, he came up with a new lie. Hence GLOBAL WARMING, HOORAY no one can realy disprove that bogus theory. And so his brain washed followers, who obviously need something to make them feel good, continue to grow in numbers.

And you wonder why this country is going to HELL on a FREIGHT TRAIN. STUPID PEOPLE!!!
If each of the forms of energy had to pay their true cost including sickness, cleanup and so on, the wind and solar options would come out cheapest. We subsidise coal and oil just by not including all of their costs into the equation.

The United States can demand that developing countries not pollute our world, but would be ignored. The only option is to develop clean energy that is economically competitive with coal and oil. Then the developing countries would adopt the technology because it is the most economically viable approach and we will all win with healthier people and a more beautiful world to live in.
algore has shown a canny ability to not tell the truth when its inconvenient.  he himself is a gross polluter & the notion that man is causing this possibly brief period of warming, when the planet has shown far greater warming trends in the past prior to mankind, is both arrogant, bizarre and intellectually suspect.  we don't even really know if man is better off with a warming or cooling earth.
Al Gore is a god among men. He has a brain and isn't afraid to use it.

The commercials that have really gotten under my skin lately are the ones for GEICO. They are misogynistic and just down right stupid.

That poor girlfriend of the caveman that has to pick up the metal detector or pull her shirt back on or walk out with her intolerant and incredibly ignorant and childish caveman boyfriend stomping away just grates on my nerves; like nails on a chalkboard. I remember the commercials and would never purchase anything from GEICO. They obviously aren't marketing to people like me because they've lost me months ago.

Thank Ford that the Caveman sit-com died a quick death. I thought it was just as banal, vacuous and insipid as the rest of 'reality TV'... The fact that the commercials somehow imply racism against the cavemen of the world is morally repugnant and devalues race. Who ever does those spots should be fired if they can't find some other way to get their point across. Sorry to divert from Al Gore...
Gore has done great things to democratize cable tv an advertising.
He lets viewers make ads and send them in to compete against each other; the winners get paid ad company money to show their wares on the screen.
The result is refreshing new stuff like this.
It is absolutely correct that Al Gore has an inconvenient truth or two to explain.  His graphic of the hockey stick projection of expected future warming, which he states is based upon “evidence”, has been broken.  The short term warming trends he so wistfully discusses have been reversed.  The Earth is now in a cooling trend.  Alaska has experienced the earliest onset of cold temperatures in many years. Perhaps Al Gore should look into the scientific effects of sunspots on the temperature of Earth and the other planets.  Scientists have long noted similar warming and now cooling cycles on uninhabited planets, which are most probably attributable to sunspots.  After all the Sun is a somewhat larger influence on this planet than all of mankind thus far.  That of course makes for another inconvenient truth for Al Gore.  How would he be able to make millions to maintain his yacht and private jet if global warming were indeed a natural occurance caused by sunspots?  Maybe Al gore is conveniently unaware that the north shore of Alaska at one time was a warm forest and not frozen tundra.  It was a warm forest before man emerged on this planet.
The fuel crisis is completely shortchanged and a lot larger than anyone is willing to admit. Both Mexico and USA underground oil reserves will run dry within an estimated ten years (Aproximately 50% of the oil we use every day). NAFTA will secure our CURRENT level of oil imported from Canada and OPEC will have us by the hypothetical testicles. Every small step helps. Having Clean electricity- no coal or fossil fule burned- by the time we run out of oil is a bare necessity.
An interesting group of comments.  The ones who wish to respond to the FACT of Global warming are called names and told they do not understand that these are all natural things not man-made.  They are given a few "spun" facts as if they were answers.  Any counter argument is blithly ignored.  So to "un-spin" a few facts.  YES there have been periods of warming in the past as shown in geological samples.  HOWEVR (un spin time) these were GRADUAL changes that occured over hundreds to thousands of years OR they were mino blips that lasted very short periods of time corresponding to increases in the suns activity.  The global warming we are seeing NOW is not part of the long term trends, it is something that has started in the middle of a cooling trend of the late 1800s.  the RATE of change is also significantly faster than EVER recorded in the geological history.  The increase in sun induced warming stopped in the mid 1990s and we SHOULD have been on the cooling part for the early 2000s unfortunately temperatures continued to rise.  this means that the warming we are seeing now is NOT related to NORMAL cycles therefore it must be induced by something else.  the only LOGICAL source would be mankinds increase in pollution.  Therefore while there is some credence to those who argue this is a natural occurance, the timing and rate of change say otherwise.
Al Gore???  Come on this guy is a joke-  What does he drive- look at his "energy effeciency" And the only "Inconvientent Truth" was his made up lies and manipulated facts- Like the fact that the temperature stations are not standardized (some even taking reading below exhaust vents or off of blacktop) No sorry this is just another politician trying to push some made up agenda to get my money-  and when he fails- well he leaves politics (yea right) and takes my tax money to "research" the made up cause and buy himself a Nobel-  Sad sad sad
I'm with you Scott, maybe before each ostrich puts it's head into the sand,it can kiss it's neighbors ass goodbye.
I do not believe in global warming. this is just another scared tactic to make us buy new technologist, just like the Oceanus layer. Do anyone ask what happen there, why it is  forgotten?
Because now we got something else to scared us to death. people needs to look in to this thing more deeply and stop falling into this kinds of ignorance bliss. Al Gore should get a life with the rest of the people who support his theory,do you think that he cared so much? If he do why does he keep a mansion that consume thousands of dollars in energy a month.PLEASE WAKE UP.
Comments selected for publication are skewed by MSNBC. Coherent points of view not aligned with the gospel of man-made global warming are screened out in favor of less articulate opponents. Or of course, well-written voices in favor. Those always make the cut.

No, I'm not surprised. Just ticks me off.
I find it astonishing that there are so many people who simply reject the possibility of Global Warming out of hand, despite the fact that an overwhelming number of climatologists assert its existence.

IF there is a POSSIBILITY that climate change is Mankind-induced, isn't it logical that we take any/all steps to mitigate/eliminate its encroachment?

If your doctor tells you that doing "X" will increase your risk of cancer by "Y" times, and you need to spend "Z" dollars to prevent it, will you:
            A.  Call him self-serving and delusional?
            B.  Claim only Jesus will save you?
            C.  Protest the cost and simply die?
            D.  State that cancer happens,and
shrug it off, saying you're out
                of luck?

Thus are the arguments against efforts to curb global warming

I'm glad to see all the silly nonsense backing Al Gore and his ilk. The catastrophists come out of the woodwork every so often, adopt some silly cause, rail about how 'uninformed' the 'deniers' are, and accuse any who would question any aspect of their religion of being in the pay of Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big Tobacco, etc. The apocalypse isn't nigh and I await with much pleasure what new bandwagon these Luddites will hop onto - it's like the JW's - oh, the End is coming in 1898, no wait 1912, no wait 1940, no wait . . .
Too bad, as usual, that the media does not even bother to point out the the REAL Inconvenient Truth about protecting the 'environment' is "An Inconvenient Truth" contains so very few of those inconveniently  Truthful FACTS!

More than 30,000 real, honest scientists, not university hacks, are willing to tell you the Inconvenient FACTS about Big Al, Big Oil, Big Al, Big Business and Global Climate Change!

Hah, even the Enviro-liars have backed off from the misleading descriptor, "Global Warming" and are now hedging their bets by calling it Global Climate Change!

Of course, you could not be bothered to wonder why that change in terminology. It is because there is no "Inconvenient Truth" as espoused by Big Oil Al.

REAL Science has shown some areas of the earth are warmer, some are codler, some ice is melting and some ice is getting thicker!

Don't believe it? If you are a Greenie, odds are you haven't gotten this far as you most likely don't read what you don't like to hear.

Look it up!
"Live Simply So That Others May Live"

LOL! WEll, Mark, unless you voted for Ron Paul, the only change you will see in the next four years is the failure of the Dollar, the loss of your investments to inflation and the treat of raising your children in a depression!

It is going to be brutal for those of you who do not think the rest of the world will eat us up, bones and all, in the coming years.

Think all the good thoughts you wish, but you are really a few years behind the curve in moving your investments into foreign currency ONLY assets, "for the children", of course.

Cut this out, Mark, tape it to the fridge! Look at it again when they come to take the fridge away!

From: Geologist in Arizona!

The inconvenient truth is that more and more young and middle aged people are making evaluations of information based upon the popularity of WHO says something rather than WHAT is being said.

You and I understand the realities of global and local climates changes. However, I assure you, the word of a celebrity or a politician carries far more weight than that of a REAL scientist.

Hm, weren't those weird, freaky kids who were hanging around the theater department the same weird freaky people who are now movie stars and celebrities?

I know they must be smart 'cause they sure read that script about the environment really good!

Lord knows, the polls always show that politicians, from ALL PARTIES, are held in lower esteem than even lawyers and Used Car Salesmen!

Worra, worra, who to trust, who to believe?
AHAH!

Now I understand the reason so many are being duped into thinking there is worldwide global warming!

They have been listening to and quoting Climatologists!

Climatology is a lie!

Climatology is a club made up of people who utilize computer generated models to try to better the Farmer's ALmanac in predicting the weather!

Guess what?

They can't do it!

The Farmer's Almanac is better at predicting the weather than all the climatologists and all the computer models put together!

Ask a climatologist what the weather will be NEXT FRIDAY and he will hedge his bets and change his predictions four times between now and next Friday!

So, let me see, do I really want to base my lifestyle, my taxation program for 350 million people and the rest of the global population on the ideas and models of professional WEATHER GUESSERS who can't get it right a week at a time?
Al Gore stands to make millions off this crackpot theory.Sure he willing to scare the hell out of anybody that will listen.United Nations ,Al Gore,And the global Economy needs to be put on a slow boat to China. Then and only then will the U.S.be a superpower again.Wake up people were turning into a third world country
What scares the hell out of me is that everything Americans do is all about convenience.  We fight the theory of global warming, we abort our children, we rage in traffic, we buy foreign products etc. etc.  Life as we knew it is over in America.  You think it was every man for himself in the recent past?  Watch what happens now!  Let's let the automakers go under, Let's fight Obama so he can't accomplish anything.  We can make this country great again or we can prove to the rest of the world that they were right and we just don't have what it takes anymore.  Those that don't partake of the struggle will perish.
Scientifically, how many years would be a good sample to determine what our climate is doing?

Polution is bad, no doubt.  Wasteful habits- also bad.  Politicians making millions over the next big thing- unacceptable- no, criminal.  We are plugged in to the only facts we know, provided by biased, self serving populists and fascists.  We should seek truth, not TV and internet self proclaimed "facts."  Look at the source of the propaganda, and follow the money lines.  Once we understand the angle of the information presented, we can move past the bias and are able to begin our search for truth, and end the intellectual slavery we are deeply entrenched in.

Question everything.  Understand and know what you believe in.
