Microsoft’s small screen of bore

Apple has the Mac guy and the PC guy. Now Microsoft has Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld.

A new ad, apparently meant to promote Microsoft’s Windows operating system franchise, features Gates, Microsoft’s chairman and one of the world’s richest men, trying on shoes in a faux shoe store with Seinfeld, the comedian best known for his eponymous TV show.

In trademark Seinfeld style, the two banter mostly about nothing (or nothing that makes much sense anyway), share a meaningful look about the word "leather" and barely mention the product the company is seeking to promote. The 90-second spot -- the first volley what is promised to be a broad and pricey campaign -- ends with Gates wiggling his behind as the two walk through a mall parking lot.

There’s been a lot of buzz about how the commercial is odd, confusing and difficult to follow. All that is true, but those concerns pale in comparison to the major problem with the ad -- it’s boring.

Gates, who recently stepped down from day-to-day responsibilities at Microsoft, may have great wealth in common with Seinfeld, but that doesn’t mean the two of them have much natural rapport. As for Seinfeld, there’s no question he’s a comic genius, but you wouldn’t know that from this commercial’s musings about things like when computers might taste like cake.

It would be one thing if those musings were quirky and funny, but they’re not. That’s surprising because Seinfeld proved to be a pretty good pitchman, doing a pretty similar shtick, years ago for American Express.

Rather than getting our attention and making us wonder what those wacky Microsoft advertising folks might think of next, we found our mind wandering to other questions like, "When will this commercial end?"

The ad falls especially flat when compared to the obvious thorn in Microsoft’s side -- rival Apple’s widely successful series of spots that have poked fun at Microsoft’s staid image.

The "I’m a Mac/I’m a PC" ads work because they are quick, funny and, most important, they entertain us while actually promoting the product in question.

Microsoft’s ad, by contrast, doesn’t lay out any clear advertising strategy. Rather than taking on Apple’s franchise, it risks reinforcing the very things that Apple makes fun of Microsoft for.

I grow so weary of anything that tries to make two incredibly wealthy people look like "just a coupla of the guys".....they're not. I don't care if they give all their pay for this campaign to my favorite charity(ME), it's all a sham. But I can admit it, if I ever get that kinda dough....you're gonna know it.
All of you people are still talking about the commercial, seems to have done its work.
You spend THIS much for an ad and THIS is all you get? Talk about SCHMUCKS!
Here's one for you from a Texas Advertiser who has dreams and nothing more. Here's what I would have done....and it CAN be done when you have this kind of cash.

Gates in Seinfeld's old apartment. Music/everything - but it's Gate's world....Jerry comes in and they banter back an fourth - small talk on current issues. Jerry then looks at Gates and says, "Is this a bizarro world or what?
Lisa Kudro walks in and is "Elaine".....
Ends with Microsoft logo in the Seinfeld font
"Solutions. Possibilites. Endless."

It would grab your attention. It needs to be polished - but I was sooooo disappointed.
Personally, I find this ad amusing because all through his show, Seinfeld had a MAC in his apartment!

Hypocrisy, party of one your table is now ready.
The ad's point is obvious.  Microsoft is in merger discussions with Jockey Underwear .
My wife and I thought the commercial was great. How could anyone not enjoy seeing Bill Gates in something light and fun like this? As for Seinfeld, it was just nice to see him period since he has been out of the limelight for some time. The negative responses here I can only chock up to jealousy I suppose. Get over it. Seinfeld earned his wealth by giving many millions of us some great entertainment over the years. How many millions still come home from a tough day and flip on a Seinfeld re-run and have a chuckle that helps them relax and relieve the stress?
Gates, regardless of what operating system you use, how could you not love this guy? Here is a guy who is the dictionary definition of a nerdy geek, probably got teased in school, had trouble getting dates, etc. and he "shows them" by becoming one of the wealthiest men ever. Not only that, he uses his brain to give something to the world that changes the entire world almost overnight. This guy didn't invent a new widget; he literally changed the lives of almost every person in the world with his technology contributions. Instead of keeping it all to himself, he establishes the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and goes to work just as diligently to help others benefit from his success. Gates deserves every penny he earned and now gives away, he doesn't need to be "hip", and he can laugh at all the "hip" people who will never be remembered for anything as he passes them on the way to his bank each day.
What was the point of that ad?  Is it a series of stories leading up to something?  If so I'm not drawn into the Shoe Store plot and will probably try to miss the subsequent advertisements.  Wow shoes!  How incredibly dull... let's make a big ad campaign based on dull things.  Next we can make an ad about fireplace tools and then about ball point pen caps.
What's sad is in every Seinfeld episode Jerry has a Mac of one form or another sitting on the desk by the window.
The commercial is absolutely hilarious...'Is that your toe?' 'No' 'What is it?' 'Leather.'  I can appreciate and laugh at dry humor, and therefore get a big smile everytime I see it.  It may not be as 'hip' as those Mac commericals, but it's practical - the same reason MSFT (not Apple) is used in business.
The Microsoft ad is a great parallel to the Mac commercials.  It proceeds to have two guys discussing nothing (or trivial matters at best) which is EXACTLY like the Mac ads.  You may ask what the point of this ad is, but its point is to illustrate how the Mac ads also have no point.  Mac ads are Seinfeld episodes that make such extreme caricatures that they no longer represent reality.

Why pay more for a product than you have to?  Because it’s delicious?  Or like an Apple it’s shiny.  People don’t want a computer because it is shiny or delicious – they want it because it can run software.  Macs are shiny.  PCs run software.  Delicious doesn’t matter.
Try this on for size. It's a commercial about Nothing.
Seinfeld - unfunny
Gates - boring and unfunny
Ad in general - totally missed the mark

You'd think a couple multi-gazillionnaires could do better.
I found nothing to like about the ad. Boring. Very boring. I'm not a MSFT fan, but I do know lame advertising when I see it. That having been said, the ad did work on one potentially important level: many people perplexed by the ad are wondering about/looking forward to the next installment.
I'm a long time supporter of MS products but they really lost it with both Office 2007 (dump those confusing and ugly tabs and give me back the menu I spent so many years learning) and Vista (memory hog that didn't support more than half my hardware and crashes more than XP).

The Vista ad showing people who don't know Vista but are thrilled with it after only ten minutes did nothing to make me feel better about all the money I wasted. And why would anyone accept the words of people with so little computer knowledge? On top of that, it usually takes longer than ten minutes for Vista to crash or even hiccup. Should I be thrilled about that?

The ad described in this article won't convince anyone that Windows is the cat's pajamas (yes, I am using a very old and outdated expression for effect).
I saw the ad with my boyfriend last night.  We didn't even see the logo at the end, because we were too busy looking at each other with the look of, "Huh?"  It was not a very well made commercial, was too long, and it was just boring.  They can do better than that.
Allison Linn called Seinfield a comic genius?  I like Seinfield, but he's not a comic genius.  Please . . .

Linn's opinion reminds me of how the French crave Jerry Lewis and call him a comic genius.

Yuk!

I hate PR/Spinners/Propagandists who say stuff like that!
It was a different approach... it took the 'WTF humor' that Mac uses and ran a little too far with it... it kept me thinking about the spot. Kind of the point, yeah?
Dumbest, lamest commercial I've ever seen.  There is absolutely nothing to "get" here, idiotic MS fanboy claims to the contrary.
I personally liked the ad. They weren't selling anything specific (notice no mention of Vista), just telling you the company is "delicious," so you take that as you will. And it wasn't pointless. Through Jerry's ranting you get the sense that Microsoft is always thinking of something new, albeit probably not cake computers. (Can't wait for the touch-screen coffee table)
I'm a Linux advocate and still enjoy both the new ad for Microsoft and the Mac/PC ads. The Microsoft one was extremely long, I but I laughed at its goofiness; I was glad Bill Gates has some humor about him.
The Mac guy is smug, I agree. Some Mac users think they are elite, yes, and it really does cramp the computer community. Shouldn't we all get along to create some massive Mac/Windows/Linux house-cleaning robot?
But after talking with a few people it comes down to Mac users generally like things that just work for them and look good, and Windows users like to know what's going on (while personally I like tinkering with everything imaginable so I use Linux distributions).
Fun ad. Too much debate over it.
*** All of you people are still talking about the commercial, seems to have done its work. ***

Uh, no it will have done its work when I buy another Winblows PC, and I have no intention of doing any such thing.
Like a piece of painting, different people see differently.

Leather Shoe => Window/PC is a perfect fit for everyone regardless of your size (demand).

Credit Card => PC might not look slicky or cute; but it is "PLATINUM"; therefore, it has a high intrinsic value. Well, what's in your credit line matter, not the cover.

Cake => I love the PC so much that I would eat it if it is editable and sweet like a cake; also, there is another meaning; well, we all think GREEN - Earth's friendly product; aren't we?
The ad isn't very good at all.  Though I think Apple's are too pretentious for me to like as well.
The ad reminds me of that period in the early 90s when it was IBMs turn to try to look hip and cool. They thought putting their reps in T Shirts instead of blue suits would do it. But it didn't.
This is one of the funniest ads I have seen in a long time. For those who think it is boring, I guess that you do not have a sense of humor. I feel that Bill Gates has done more for the world than most give him credit for. Just check out his foundation. I am a die hard Macintosh fan but I have to say that the ad campaign that Apple has been running, touting how much better there company is than Microsoft, is arrogant, snotty, and all around irritating. Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld are a great team and I look forward to more ads from Microsoft.
does Bill Gates make computers??? totally didn't get it.
Well it is a mixed bag as reflected in the comments seen here. I can say it was too Long for TV which does cut out some of the person they wish to reach. Plus the style of Gates seemed to lack something.  (I think if it was just the last 10 seconds played on TV it would be grand) yes in one way or another people are speaking about this, no it’s not going to win over Mac people. We will have to see what they have in store next though it seems gates being the Icon to make people switch with a dryness to him is about the same message of The Pc Guy on the mac ads, not sure what this means but I guess New unstable PC is better the Stable older PC.
I wanted to give it an honest look, but it really was pretty bad.
This ad makes me want a churro...
..."what a disappointment. if they don't pull this ad fast not realizing  they have made the biggest blunder in MSFT's history" - The Prez (Sent Monday, September 08, 2008 8:58 PM)

This ad is hardly the worst blunder in MSFT History, that would be Windows ME.

I agree the ad is bad. I am even an avid MSFT user. All but one of my home computers are Windows, some are even Vista.
I just don't get this ad at all, it doesn't haelp the Microsoft "brand" at all.

What they should ahve done is had Bill and Jerry sitting down at a resturant where they demo surface with both of them putting down their credit card (maybe even team up with Amex) where they show them splitting the bill by laying the CCs on the table and dragging the parts of their order to their respective CCs like they show on the surface demo here:
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/videos.html

mmmmmmmmmmmm Churos.

Odd, offbeat, somewhat enjoyable. they do need to up the production values and get the sound better in the next round tho. Either way I will never use a Mac, I am a PC guy all the way.
I actually thought this commercial was funny enough that I re-wound the DVR to watch it again.  And every time we see it, my wife and I laugh.  So, to each their own. I'm not a Seinfeld fan, or a proponent of either Apple or Microsoft, as each have their merits as a company, with various products enjoyed by various people.  But the thing that gets to me is why people have to be so polar on this issue, or why the commercial has to be compared to the Mac-guy commercials.  Let it stand on its own.  It's different.  And, if we have to compare, at least it's new, as opposed to the tired re-hashing that Apple is doing with its Mac adverts.
I have to chuckle when reading the Apple club's comments. Face it guys: Apple hardware and software have as many problems as anything Microsoft has ever produced - just admit it and get over it!
I actually liked the Microsoft ad a lot more than the lame "Apple guy vs. PC guy" stuff - it is getting REALLY old and boring. At least the Microsoft ad is funny.
I'm an Mac/PC

PC:  I just fed and innoculated 10,000 poor African children today.

Mac: But I look cool and laid back, giving the appearance of a person who actually would do the kind of things that you do.

Happy, goofy, boomer piano music....
The term was "Pleather", not leather, as featured in the commercial.
It reminds me of the 80s when IBM hired the post-run M*A*S*H cast as pitchmen. Those ads were weak as well. I think this ad campaign shows that Microsoft has become the IBM of our age. "no one gets fired for buying Microsoft"
I like the ad, and think it is clever.  Jerry Seinfeld and Bill Gates are two of the most famous people in the world.  How can you go wrong?  I can't wait for the next ad to come out.
Just because its not slapstick doesn't mean its not funny.  It just means that Allison Linn as an underdeveloped sense of humor.  I'll see of I can find that clip of the bear falling out of the try onto the trampoline for your enjoyment.
I can't help but think the promise of "moist delicious cake" is similar to the promise of "victory in IRAQ."

Please... give me something I can actually sink my teeth into.
At latest count I see 50 posts on this commercial.

I'd say the commercial has already achieved its goal.
The ad is awesome, hands down.  The Mac ads are full of bull****, and only a Mac idiot would buy those lies!  I've said it once, and I'll say it again, "Macs are for people with more money than brains"
I saw one of the newer Apple commercials where "PC" & "Mac" are discussing how Macs are now the #1 notebooks on college campuses. Have you seen this one? "PC" is trying to catch college students by hiding in a pizza box. And THIS crappy commercial is Microsoft's rebuttal??.. their attempt to win back college kids?  Did they actually hire a marketing company?  Did they really pay money for this pitiful excuse for a marketing campaign? Not only is it boring, but it certainly doesn't appeal to younger people in any sort of way.  Jerry Seinfeld is hilarious, but he's certainly not 'hip' anymore. And not only that, Apple computers have the reputation of being much easier to use, nearly impervious to viruses, having great technical support and damn it they just LOOK cool. How is watching uber-rich Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfeld trying on shoes and shaking their butts in a parking lot addressing ANY of those ideas? What does it have to do w/ Microsoft products at all?? The Apple ads are witty, original, AND point out their computers' strengths. Try again Microsoft. I think this ad is just making you sink even deeper.
Come on folks, lighten up. It's just a commecial, and give me Bill and Jerry over Billy Mays any day.
I thought the ad was great.  I even recorded it on the DVR to show it to others.  The Seinfeld type humor is all over the bit, i.e. "Is that your toe--no, it's leather".  The Big Top points comment and the Platinum card picture are priceless.

Now the Apple bit comparing the PC and Mac IS boring.  It's not the least bit entertaining and it's getting very old.
Phil, San Antonio, TX

Though I respect your opinion.. I completely disagree.  Not entertaining and all.  And more importantly, what does it do to combat the negative view people (particularly young people) have of the brand??
Agreed.  The point of a commercial is to get people talking about the product, and this commercial is obviously doing that.  Not to mention that those of us with a well developed sense of humor find this spot very funny.  GREAT COMMERCIAL.
I recently read about this commercial coming out.  I can completely understand Bill Gates wanting to do something different while in retirement but that it would not be very far removed from the very company he retired from.  i get that.

Now why on God's green earth he decided to do something with Jerry Seinfield completely confuses me.  Why, if Billy was trying to promote his product, would he get someone known for being on a show that was admittedly about nothing.  Why did Billy get a nothing guy?!

Here's a list of actors/comedienes that would have made for a better pairing and could have made a far more interesting/compelling commercial:

Bernie Mac - R.I.P. - just picture him yelling about his horrible computer and Bill getting him to settle down by using Microsoft.

Pamela Anderson - picture her trying to use the zoom-in feature on her computer and picture Bill never looking at Pamela's face and saying - 'see, you can make them bigger and bigger!'

Tom Cruise - Bill and Tom jumping up and down on a couch because they are excited about new software.

Sarah Palin - Bill showing her how to use google and wikipedia to find out the job duties of a vice-president.

Just because this is msnbc, doesn't mean you have to bash microsoft to prove you are an unbiased reporter/opinion maker. There is nothing but haters on here and its so irritating. Microsoft is not trying to mimic apple's "hip" commercials, which are extremely played out and in reality don't tell the whole truth between the differences of pc's and mac's, microsoft is just trying to do something different, and it was, i thought it was hysterical, its not like microsoft needs to advertise anyways, they just did it to show that they are not robots, and i thought it was quite affective, obviously we are all talking about it, so it worked. stop being haters, apple is not perfect, if they were the world would be dominated by them, business' would use them and i wouldn't have to hack my iphone to get its full potential out of it. apple = overrated, can't wait for jobs to give it up.
Unless there is some smart follow up to this add, it is a big waste of money!
I just did not get it, and I assume most people neither!
I can't get past the Hispanic family gawking through the window at the two of the wealthiest guys on the planet, who pretending to be average Joes by slumming at the mall and a discount clown shoe store. Disturbing on some undescribable level.
I did find the commercial to be funny.  Not pee yourself funny but more like I could watch that another 20 times and chuckle kinda funny.  The mac commercials were funny the first time you watch them but every time after that they make you change the channel. They also seem pretty self important, like OSX doesn't ever have updates to security holes (quite a few), or they never have security prompts (I've heard there is a similar experience on the macs just not as often as MS's 1st attempt at this).  They never show the OS, never tell you exactly what they are doing that's better, they just use the 4 year old's argument that they are a big poopie head and you are too if you use them instead of us.
Bill Gates is a very funny man. I've been around him a few times in a casual crowd and his self depricating humor is warn and genuine. I thought the ad was a hoot. Especially Bill's rear wiggle.
