Chevy shows some skin

We’re guessing a new commercial for Chevrolet’s Traverse crossover vehicle is meant to appeal to a woman who fantasizes about having the "perfect guy" – he’s hot, he’s romantic and he does the housework!

Frankly, that kind of reverse gender stereotyping is offensive enough to both men and women, not to mention outdated. But alas, if only the ad were just that tacky.

Instead, it’s tacky, nonsensical and weirdly evocative of pornography. It’s the type of ad that viewers have noticed, but often only to ask, "What the heck was that about?"

Chevrolet

In the ad, a guy -- who at first appears to be naked but later is revealed to be dressed only in jeans --is seen making dinner reservations, ironing a dress and, in the final shot, on his knees cleaning the toilet.

The tagline reads: "It’s everything you’ve ever wished for … and then some."

That’s followed by the usual car ad fodder: gleaming pictures of the vehicle in question.

With every car company in America trotting out commercials focused on fuel efficiency, we’re guessing Chevrolet felt it had to do something totally different to shock people into paying attention to its Traverse. After all, this is the type of big vehicle that has fallen far out of favor among many consumers.

But instead, they’ve confused viewers, who either don’t get what the guy is doing or don’t understand the connection between the guy and the vehicle.

We’ll concede that the commercial is memorable, but not in a way that makes us want to buy a Chevy.

Topless women ironing and scrubbing the toilet while a woman sings, "She's useful, she's beautiful, she's everything you ever wished for, and then some."
for YEARS ads have had scantily clad women in ads that had nothing to do whatsoever with the product .... now why, all of a sudden, is this ad "Instead, it’s tacky, nonsensical and weirdly evocative of pornography. It’s the type of ad that viewers have noticed, but often only to ask, "What the heck was that about?""  ..... hypocritical on the critics part at best!
wow, i am so glad i’m not the only person who didn’t understand this commercial. i think I saw it 3 or 4 times before i figured out the guy was being “all you ever wanted” instead of “just creepy”.  i think what threw me was that the dress he’s ironing really looked to me like a little girl’s party dress, which i found skeevy. (not that a man would iron a girl’s dress, but be doing so half-dressed while making dinner reservations for their 6 month anniversary – of what? eek!) The toilet scrubbing was just over the top, i couldn’t figure how that fit into the anniversary plans, and didn’t want to think too much about that.

i was so weirded out by the overly sensitive actions that i didn’t even realize it was for a car, much less which type or brand of car. Probably not Chevy’s goal, but at least i wont be associating their brand with this confusing and somewhat disturbing spot.
The ad is bizarre.  At first glance I thought it was aimed at the gay community, until my wife pointed out that a dress, not a t-shirt, was being ironed.  Then my wife notes that the "anniversary" was only 6 months.  If Chevy wanted to make a real statement, the line should have read "6 years".

A real misfire by GM...
Ad agencies have been using women as the hook for every type of a commercial. So why not the reverse for women? If it helps a woman get through the work day? Why Not? But it seems it will only make her miserable; contrasting the perfect man of their dreams to a jerk like me? I'm Intelligent; Opinionated; and likeable. But still a jerk. I have no clue about  women. The longer I live the less I know about women. And I am an old fart.
I only remember seeing this commercial once and could not for the life of me remember what it was for.  I do not remember the car "commercial" part at the end.  I agree, though, that it is odd and memorable but not really in a good way.
Is this offensive? No.  But when ever this add is on, I have no idea what it is selling making it it a bad add
It never ceases to amaze me how far the media will go to bash the American Auto Industry. If this ad were made by Toyota or Honda, this article would have never made it to press.
huh. the poor SUV companies have apparently lost all hope, and want to bring back memories of happier days for themselves by featuring have naked men. oh boy.
I am sorry, but I do not agree with the above evaluation of the Chevy ad for the Traverse.  From the opening scene where it is printed across the screen that it is an ad for the Chevy Traverse, through to the end - I understand EXACTLY what they are talking about and am not the least bit offended, nor would any mature male be offended who understand that the definition of gender roles is timeless and often humorous.  I think Chevy knows who their target market is and is speaking directly to them. Yes, I am sure they are looking for unique ways to sell vehicles that are not the most economical on gas.  But having owned several vehicles - some foreign, some domestic, some economical, some not as much like the Dodge 4x4 Quad cab which I bought because it had a Hemi! The Dodge commercials at the time showed hot chicks after anyone driving a Hemi, but I had a lot of guys looking at me when I drove my truck. Not that I cared as I bought it for the power, the seating room and climbing over snow banks in Saskatchewan!  So, you never know what messages behind an ad will appeal to a customer.  I certainly would have a look at the Traverse - just because of this advertisement, however, I would expect it to deliver something extra that know one else does, since that is the key message I hear.
Somehow the end product does not equate the rest of the commercial... And that pink iron? Is Chevy making a plan for a particular segment of the market? Hmmmm....
Is that what the add is about?  From watching it, first thought he was talking about his car,  couldn't figure out why he was ironing a childs dress, and had no idea he was cleaing toilet, could never figure that out
Isn't this commercial aimed at homosexual men?
I like it. clever. better than the same old forgettable car ad.
I actually love this ad. I thought it was truly funny and pretty clever. Lighten up!
What a stupid commercial. When I think of the "perfect man" it doesn't involve what kind of car he drive. Sheesh....
um, and the dress seems to be a small girl's dress.  And he mentions a 6 month anniversary.  I can't figure it out.
Heck, everyone I knew thought iwas playing to the gay community. I even emailed Chevy asking what the heck where they trying to get at with the commercial.
I have to agree with the majority of sentiment I am seeing here:

1.  Not offensive...at least not anymore than 90% of everything else on television.

2.  Not memorable...does nothing to reinforce a connection to the vehicle or inspire me to purchase one.

I think the idea of speaking of the vehicle in the context desired was the right idea, since you obviously cannot tout this as a fuel-efficient, environmentally friendly SUV..so you have to go another route.

However, I just feel the message execution is off target and the case fails to be made.  You remember the guy...everything else is forgetable.
Wouldn't have ever bought a Chevy before; now I may!
We have commercial critics now? What happened to the days where we would flip around to see what else was on or do something constructive during intermissions? Now not only do we sit through commercials, we evaluate their political correctness and relevance to product as well. Totally astounding.
Seems to me that this ad is doing exactly what it set out to.  Namely, getting all of us to talk about it.  I would never have heard of the ad, or the Chevy Traverse, had I not seen this posting.
oh blah blah ... just one word HUNKALICIOUS!
Sure appears to be a pedophile, with the dress barely big enough for a 10 year old girl.  So that is American like chevy and apple pie?  Buy this car and you too can be a perverted freak who needs to be removed from society?  I was offended instantly upon seeing the ad and certainly now will likely never buy another chevy in my life.
How do you delicate flowers suffer through the vulgarities of everyday life if you consider THIS to be "offensive?"
First of all I can't believe you get paid to be such an idiot?  with that being said.
oh my gosh are you people for real?  what on earth is wrong with the commercial?  6 months, 6 years who cares, the guys making a nice gesture, and if it takes a chevy traverse to do it. so what?  good grief have we become such a jaded country we can't see the good in anything anymore, for crying out loud.  If it was some big boobed bimboo, nobody would blink an eye.
Who cares what the commercial is about? The guy is HOT!! and it's about damn time we see hot, half-naked men being used to sell things other than shaving creme and toiletries! Gay men and hetro women deserve some eye candy, too!!!!
Hey clueless people, this is an ad to get the gay dads, and and probably gays and lesbians in general, out there.  Yes, they do exist and they do have daughters and they do buy cars.  I am just laughing that people don't get it.  I guess living in S.F. gives me some insight.  I think it's a nice ad.
Ad Sucks.
OK, now tell me who they guy is in the ad so I can see more of him!
I was confused by this ad too. It was very creepy and lascivious in its' tone. total miss on chevy's part. Looks like a bunch of MALE ad execs got together to decide what would be provocative to women. ugh.
Lighten up all you boys.  Us women want to see something other that half naked women on our t.v.s and I say bring on the guys!  Who cares if it is for a car or whatever.  You guys don't complain when some half naked woman advertises beer. Whats that connection ?????
it doesnt take a PhD to see that the ad industry is now relying on the new stereotype of the dumb white male to push products -- mom, the kids, or anyone else is 10x smarter. its politically correct. i have a simple answer: never buy a product from any of those companies until they wake up. the real crime is not the idiotic stereotyping. it is the complete lack of creativity from these seven to ten figure eating ad agencies -- pathetic.
I get it! I want to have sex with him and I'm a guy albeit a gay one. If I was guaranteed that if I bought that car that I would get a go at him.. I would do it!
Poor American women.  They almost never see the perfect man on tv - to the point that they don't recognize one when they see him in a commercial.  In fact, they are actually creeped out by a perfect man.  Women are, however, ok with being bombarded with the sexist viewpoints about women in ads and tv.  Keep it up girls!  Maybe they'll never make another dream guy commercial for you.

I COULD NOT figure out this ad. I thought it was a little girl's dress - which seemed creepy. Total disconnect for me, and I'm pretty good at understanding ads.
Who Cares?  I feel silly posting my comment on something so meaningless. But I do recall watching the ad and wondering why this man was on his knees?  It took me several times to realize that he was sitting in front of the toilet. I've cleaned my own toilet and I've never done it on my knees. Seems weird. I just found out right now after reading these posts the commercial was for a Chevy. Who knew??
I think there is nothing wrong with this commercial. Come one, if it were a woman, it proabably wouldn't get as much attention. So a man loves his wife enough to acutally work around the house and do things. If you have nothing better to do then grip about this commercial, well then you need to get a life.
And we care about this because..................
I always laugh at this commercial, I like it.  I think there are lots of women out there that remember odd anniversary's like a 6 month one where as a lot of guys have a hard time remembering the year markers.  On top of that a lot of women are left to make the plans, not many guys are romantic in that way.  Many women dream of their husband or boyfriend cleaning and ironing.  I think the pink iron is about him not being too "masculine" to care about the color.  the only thing I didn't get is that he was ironing a small dress, who knows about that.  The whole add was basically that this is a girls dream guy and the traverse is a dream car.  I really didn't think the add could be confusing if you watch it at all.  From the beginning it drew me in to see what the add was all about cause it was different.  and it didn't seem pornographic to me at all and I am pretty conservative.
uh, appeals to women and gays and small dress pervs; pink iron, down on his knees in front of a toilet; pervy. crossover, hah! very funny! i'd be interested in the "who" of the creative team who put it together. pervy crossover. get the rushes, survey stats on who likes it, i can guess. yuck!
Who cares, what about the body count of the war in Irac anyone know that, or is that not important enough.....but why was he ironing a little girls dress is that his daughters from a failed first marriage????
I thought they were selling ironing boards.
Honestly, I loved the ad, although I didn't get the fact that it was for a car until about the 4th or 5th time I saw it. I thought it was a nice reversal of outdated roles, and the model wasn't bad to look at as well.
I don't think the problem with the commercial is its objectivizing men.  Remember the Diet Pepsi commercial, or whatever it was, with the hot guy working the jackhammer, and all the women staring at him from the office building?  Even more sexist, but a much better commercial.

The problem with this one is that the tie between what the guy is doing and and what they are trying to sell is tenuous at best.
I was watching the Olympics I thought for a second I had changed the channel to HBO and was thinking the porn is on early tonight!
A guy with his shirt off is offensive?
Am I missing something?
G. M has it all figured out.  Make a lame commercial, set up a spin about said lame commercial, then people will actually see what lame SUV they are selling, (I hear the Limited Edition model comes with a pet rock)
Isn't that the same guy who did the Pepsi commercial a couple of years ago...the one where all the women are gawking out the office window?
