Levi’s and those little white lies

In a new ad campaign for Levi’s 501 jeans, a man and a woman slowly make their way up a darkened stairwell, simultaneously unbuttoning their jeans and debunking a series of little white lies they’ve apparently been telling each other all evening.

He’s not really in a band. She doesn’t really work for a label. And so on, until the woman finally admits, "This isn’t really my apartment." At that point, the guy looks briefly at a series of family photos that are clearly not hers, before they solve that particular problem by turning out the lights.

Of course, there are those who will disavow "Secrets and Lies" for promoting sex with strangers, and perhaps, lying. But seen another way, the ad isn’t just entertaining; it’s also uplifting.

For one thing, the couple in question is 'fessing up to their transgressions of truth, and before doing the deed, no less. For another, it’s a light-hearted way of poking fun at the type of thing that likely goes on in a bar in every city, every night of the week.

Perhaps more important, while a sex-and-lies ad could come off as cheap and cheesy, this one comes off as witty and ironic.

The ad also is in keeping with the funny yet sexy feel that 501 jeans commercials have been known for since at least the mid-1980s, when it aired its infamous, and still memorable, Laundromat commercial. (Last year, Levi’s also turned heads with a 501 commercial with two possible endings, one featuring a gay couple and the other a straight couple.)

Even if "Secrets and Lies" offends some, chances are Levi’s will think it’s worth the risk.

The onslaught of pricey, trendy denim over the past few years has left Levi’s vulnerable to having its jeans relegated to the racks where all the basic but boring clothes live. By taking risks with edgy commercials, the company gives itself a shot at staying relevant.

"Secrets and Lies" is part of a series of new spots that also includes "First Time," in which a young man and woman flirtatiously banter about doing something that at least one of them has never done before. Needless to say, it’s not what you think.

Are you nuts! It is no more than a sleezy trash add.
Don’t we glorify people of questionable character enough in our society?  I dare say I don’t think it would be very "uplifting" if you came home and discovered that a couple of horny barfleis pulled down their pants and soiled your furniture with their sexual leftovers.  So you see, the add says so much more than aren’t I hot in my jeans.  Let’s hear it for herpes!
Chris, Los Angeles
I think the ad is sort of "yucky" too; it leaves me wondering what else will be confessed in the next few moments between these two that we won't hear.  I'm also bothered that there is a great song playing in the background, "Come Walk With Me," by Isobelle Campbell and Mark Lanegan.  What a horrible "re-introduction" for these two talented people.
Pulease.  I know plenty of single people who live their lives this way.  Both male and female.  Lighten up and let people live.  As long as they are honest, who really cares.
uplifting huh... wow, your sick.
Ironic? Witty? Give me a break...this ad is nothing more than low-brow trash.
Just like Sodom and Gomarrah! This type of stuff including homosexuality and the rest of your immoral ways are eventually going to cross the line with Almighty God and He'll have the final say. Levi's has become a trashy company and I wouldn't own one piece of their sin laden products. It won't be fun to be on the wrong side of morals from God Almighty! Jesus Christ is the same today as He was way back then and His values have not changed and He really doesn't care about political or cultural correctness! We humans are the ones that better wake up and start caring!
Couln't view it because the video link is down...
The first time I saw the commercial I thought it was going to be a condom ad.  I honestly thought that after the "I'm really not in the band."  " That's ok I am really not with a label"  blah blah blah, one of them was going to say, "Well I really do have herpes." And then the Trojan man was going to come bouncing into the scene.  So what do I know.......
Levi's has some of the best and most effective ads in the world, and this is one example! For more, check out veryfunnyads.com! And yes, I think Levi's jeans are the best a person can buy!  Seriously, though, in my opinion, when bloggers throw a little dirt, they lose a little ground (and credibility).
Just what I want my kids to see! I'm no prude but this is over the top for a TV ad.
Yeah right. It ain't trashy and it ain't offensive.
Offensive is bush standing on an aircraft carrier and saying mission accomplished.
So get a life Mike and Chris!
And now a few words from me, The Phrog of Santa Barbara.

While it is sorta cutsey, aren't jeans sold with the purpose of putting them on?  Maybe it would make more sense to have them doing a post coital pants pull on, side by side in someone elses digs.

The Phrog gives this trash one ribbit.
The Phrog just watched "First Time".

This ones a bit better but not by much.  I liked the surprise, it's not sex ending.

The Phrog rates it two and a half ribbits.
I'm about as liberal as a 47 YO pro-choice tree hugger can be, and this ad offends me. Way too risque...
Just another attempt to sell a product using sex. This world is turning to trashie low life morals or the lack of morals.  Why not tell us why we should buy their product! Duh!!!
Uplifting?  Casual sex, blatant lies and breaking and entering?  What message does this send to our teens?  I guess this makes me, at 32, in the minority.  There should be a part two where the horny couple gets caught and hauled off to jail and has to call mommy and/or daddy to bail them out...  Now THAT would be entertaining!
What's wrong with sex with strangers.  Chris, don't knock herpes if you haven't tried it.  It goes well with roasted duck.
It's an ad.

For jeans.

Come on, people- you are reading too much into this.

If anyone looks at an ad like this and thinks that they should or would do something like this then they would have done it without seeing the ad. It's called common sense...or not-so-common, I guess I should say after reading the first two comments to the article.

If you can not even watch an ad without breaking it down this much then please, for the love of humanity, turn the idiot-box off and take a walk. The fresh air will do you a world of good.
Yuck. Obnoxious.

One more mark on the side of a Constitutional amendment to limit commercial speech.
My wife and I saw this ad play in a movie theater before the film started.  Neither of us could believe our eyes.  In youth, I had a rather promiscuous lifestyle- so I'm not a prude and it doesn't bother me that people live this way.  But seeing it used in advertising is another matter entirely- itstruck us both as offensive.  We have a three-year old!  We both agreed t.v. and cable networks would never air this; we'd only seen it because we were at an R-rated film.  Am I wrong?
All I want to know is, how much did Levis pay Allison Linn to write this non-sensical crap?
Apparently America has lost its sense of humor.

By the way, all the prudish, religious oriented television programming deeply offends me and you don't see me contacting the FCC to complain.  Here's the trick I use; I turn the channel.  It's really easy to do.  If you folks haven't figured out how to do it, check your televisions instruction manual.

Why should you be able to homogenize my television viewing just because you're offended by the things that I find humorous?
Levi's has been losing market share for a long time.  501s aren't sexy by themselves, anyway.  People want value, function, and fashion.  Levi's doesn't quite know what they are selling.
I think it's a lame commercial and I'm getting tired of seeing it on tv already.  I wouldn't have even bothered responding till you called it 'uplifting'.  I'm not surprised some people would find the commercial appealing to some degree.  But to call it uplifting, come on.
Grow up people...its a television add, teach your kids right from wrong without scaring them into h3ll (yes it can be done) and you too could view this as what it is...entertainment
All I could think was, "Ewww, STD..."
No one has the right to NOT be offended.  Look folks, YOU CHOOSE to be offended.  I get so tired of hearing people saying "I'm offended" and complaining about it.  The commercial isn't the problem.  You are.  It's a frickin' jeans commercial!  Get a life!
I wonder how much this constant parade of adult themes will affect kids.

It used to be the kids were okay watching the networks; just keep them off the cable channels. And of course before cable it was pretty safe letting kids watch anything.

Then, parents started using the more family oriented cable channels to keep their kids from watching network TV.

Now, the commercials and promotions for other shows have made pretty much all channels questionable. And the news? Forget that. My parents would have loved for me to watch the news. But its gotten so adult I usually change the channel or turn off the television altogether when a kid is around.

Maybe the answer is just to get rid of the TV and go pull the Scrabble and Monopoly game out of the closet.
I do like Levi jeans not too fond of the ad. The purpose of the ad is to advertise the jeans and wear them not take them off.  T.v. and comercials are always controversial in one way or another. I just think it should have been more thought out.
I don't really see the part that makes it witty or funny or even about jeans.  Let's stop glorifying ads that promote this kind of thing.  Don't we have enough problems with STDs and unwanted/unplanned pregnancies as it is??
Great ad! I love how Levi's is willing to position itself on the edge with risque advertising. Very creative and clever marketing. Now we need a gay version!
I am a child of the 70s and all the values that go with it (environmentalist, pro-choice, individualist, and independent thinking), but I didn't care for this ad.  It was way over the top and had NOTHING to do with jeans (except taking them off and all jeans are same when they are in a heap on the floor!).  I taught my daughter about responsbile sex and then just promotes irresponsibility.
About 30 years ago I spent 5 years working for Levis. At the time they were probably the most popular jeans in the world. I can't believe the lows that this once great company has sunk to. Because they seem to find new lows to sink to, I no longer purchase their jeans. I don't purchase any of their products. Sex sells? To my family & millions of others like us the answer is NO!!!!!
levis can go rot in hell for all I'm concerned.  They're a Chinesed company not American...too bad
Wow! People really take commercials very seriously.  And wow, people are really great big hypocrites.  It's a commercial- and not a good one but certainly not that big a deal.  Grow up people!
AN AD FOR JEANS'get off it; the ad never mentions jeans till the end after we are exposed to nothing but 'trash' and 'sex'. good viewing for our young people  but just another way to show how the moral values of our great America are going down the tubes.
"LIFE UNBUTTONED"  Everyone's looking at the ad but what about the slogan? It’s even more offensive! Don't we have enough, hitting us from all sides, promoting non-stop arousal as the only path to heaven? God save us from the likes of Levi Straus!
I agree with Tasha. This is an ad, not a documentary on the mating habits of today's youth. If you think this commercial is bad you should see the series MadMen on AMC. The whole show takes place back in the late 60's at what else, an ad agency. The things they did back then would never fly in today's corporate world or any setting. So for those of you who believe were going to hell for watching this ad as entertainment, get over it.

Oh, and yes, I work in advertising/marketing.
I have two teenage grandchildren that we're trying to bring up with some moral standards. why do these companies feel the standard must be getting naked and having sex with someone you don't even know.

why do we have to pressure our children with these images. It does effect them.

I think it's trashy too.

Randy
SAW THIS 8PM SATURDAY---NICE AD FOR TEENS,NICE AD FOR PRE-TEENS--NICE AD FOR A SOFT CORE PORN DVD. JEANS? OH YEA THEY HAD SOME ON,I THINK
Maybe Levi should fess up on it's own little white lie of being a good American company. Since they no longer make a single pair of jeans in the USA but still play on the "American Original" theme I think I'll pass on their products. If I'm going to buy imported pants I'll get some at Costco for $12 that are better made than current Levi's. If I want really good quality jeans I'll buy from allamericanclothing.com. Only $35 for a pair of jeans made in the USA. Cheaper than Levi's, better made, and it helps keep my fellow American's employed.
It'll appeal to its target market. That's all that matters.
I've worked in advertising; what's the message here? I can lie, meet strangers for sex when I wear these jeans? This ad is unnecessarily promoting casual sex. With the amount of outside of marriage sex going on (watch Maury sometime) that often results in unwanted pregnancy, transmition of disease, etc. the ad is poorly focused. Can't Levi's find a stronger, less offensive way to differentiate itself?
ad?  What's a TV ad?  I haven't watched TV since I got hi-speed... Oh, take that back - I watched the Super Bowl

GetREAL people - watch some of the "soap operas" and THEN complain about CONTENT
Whether you say "leave it alone there are bigger liars out there to worry about" like Antibush666 states, or like Cary Baskin says, "God has established a standard that this example crosses the line".  We each have lies and liars in our lives that have hurt us or let us down or both.  We want the truth. Simple as that.  I am not going to view the link, and will probably not see the comercial unless it comes on during the late night news when I finally do watch TV. I am 1 of the "Gate Keepers" at my house.  I have little ones whom I hope to teach to respect and appreciate honesty and live by it and to stand on it up front.  Not when it can serve them best or go unnoticed, because "tomorrow" is coming soon, one of their generation will be the next to be standing in a pulpit or on the deck of a ship.  What do I want them to say.
Trashy.  Reading too much into it?  You don't have to read anything into it.  It's blatant casual, anonymous sex.  I agree with Chris and Tedow - would have been much more effective as an ad for STD protection and Trojans.
It'll be 502 before I buy from a company like this. Easy to remember 501 at the register. And if it mistakenly finds it's way into my cart back on the shelf it will go.
Levi needs to use velcro to hold their jeans together so you can rip them off in one smooth motion.
I have not seen the ad yet but from the sound of it I don't think I want to. I think as a country we have rased greed to such a high level we can't see were we are going annymore. Does anyone out there think of what we are teaching our kids or does it even matter anymore. OH! Buy the way how do you connect Bush to this converstion, was he wareing a pair of Levi's on that ship?
