Honda's new pitch: Old naked guys

When it comes to selling cars and trucks, most people are familiar with usual bag of tricks: beautiful scenery, beautiful women and brawny vehicles. A recent commercial for Honda’s Pilot takes things in the exact opposite direction, and it’s a refreshing change.

In "Ballooning," a middle-aged man and his teenage son are driving down the road when they come across an older man peeking out of a grounded hot air balloon, apparently in need of a ride.

Only after inviting the balloonist to hop in does the driver realize that there are actually a group of men in the balloon’s basket -- and they’re all nudists. While the ad is remarkably tasteful, it’s safe to say this is a group most people aren’t interested in seeing naked.

The punch line is that the driver is able to use a rear-view camera mounted on the dashboard to back up, saving him the embarrassment of looking over his shoulder at the group of nudists. It’s a cute trick because it makes the technology memorable without having to tout it as a safety feature, a tactic that often leaves car makers looking staid and preachy.

The gaggle of men also serves to remind viewers that the car is roomy enough for a crowd, without overtly bragging about that type of feature.

The ad really works because Honda resists the urge to overdo it. The sparse dialogue is witty, and the flummoxed expression on the driver’s face pretty much says it all. While a lot of car commercials fail for being too in-your-face, this one is subtle and surprising enough to make you want to pay attention.

Still, in an age of $4 (if not $5) per gallon gas, it’s not clear that even the wittiest commercial will be enough to sell Americans on a big vehicle like the Pilot.

They weren't all men.  There's at least on lady in the group.
Stupid and disgusting.
Shouldn't be promoting perverted acts.
They missed an opportunity to tout a micron air filtration system with one of the geezers explaining "Uh - we just shared a big can of beans".
It's about time they started showing more mature males in sexually suggestive ads... I'm so tired of seeing all the trendy little boys and girls that are supposed to make me wanna buy something... guess what, they make me wanna NOT buy something... but these guys make me wanna buy a Honda and drive around looking for stranded nudists!
Great commercial.  And those of you reading any type of discrimination, perversion, or whatever into it...YOU are the perverts.  Its a welcome, light-hearted escape from the pity parties on TV now.  Open your minds and breathe!
This is one commercial that has actually stayed with me, and I always get a chuckle out of it every time I see it again!
Oh come on... it's a commercial. It was tasteful and cute. I don't care about the product or what it is selling. But if I have to pass time watching a commercial, I would rather be ammused than pissed off.
Digusting ad I am very disppointed by Honda, I really don't think they needed to flaunt a bunch of perverts to sell a good product
Ya know, I had no idea what the point of this commercial was until reading some of the comments here.  "Dorky looking Honda with lots of seats has a back-up camera so you don't have to turn around and see naked people while backing up".  I get it now . . . I think.  The commercial with the buffalo was hilarious, this one is just stupid.
Finally a commercial without half naked beautiful women! Its deff refreshing to see old wrinkly men be exposed, and the commerical is funny. I dont know if I would give them a ride if i had a brand new honda though.
Isn't the whole purpose of a aid is to be remembered?  Then the Honda got what they paid for.  Ha! Ha!  If you have a problem with seeing a naked human the it is your problem, not theirs.
As a true American Patriot and Godly Manly Man, I object to the depravity of nudists and the cars made by the Japanese. What happened to America? Made in the USA used to mean something. Now we get terrorists stealing our freedoms with Hondas and nudists.  Now I see from some of the posts that the Evildoers are already here on the Interwebs supporting this... filth! I'll be over here driving my AMERICAN Chevy and drinking Budwiser beer... and shopping at Wal-mart. SUPPORTING AMERICA - Under GOD - with my stimulus check!

We really like this commercial. Laugh everytime we see it.
Honda using old naked guys is pretty bad. Reminds me of going to Black's Beach, a famous clothing optional beach north of La Jolla and finding out it is "Senior Citizen's Day..."
Uh, I just saw the ad on TV, and there's absolutely NO reference to a rear-view camera. The driver simply backs up, and that's the end of the ad. I've seen it 3 or 4 times, and it's always been like this. Who saw it w/ a camera mentioned?
The Pilot is not a 'big vehicle' and it's technically not an SUV.  Traditional SUVs are based on truck chassis, which is the reason why most of the hulking SUVs (Tahoe, Trailblazer, Expedition, Explorer, etc.) have a jarring ride.  The Pilot is based on the Odyssey minivan platform, which in turn is based on a stretched car platform.  This is why my Pilot has a smooth ride, gets 24 MPG on the highway, and can whip most cars from stoplight to stoplight.  Going over 400 miles on an 18.5 gallon tank is not bad, and I laugh when I pass large truck-based SUVs filling up at gas stations.

So please, do not put the Honda Pilot in the same 'big' category with other gas-guzzling SUVs.  Thank you.
It took me quite a few viewings to get what Honda was trying to sell (the rear view camera) I am fine with the nudie balloonists - I guess I don't pay close enough attention to commercial story lines!
They aren't nudists.  The point of the nudity is to show that they had to get rid of extra weight, presumably so they could travel a longer distance to avoid some unnamed danger.  It's central to the humor of the ad!?!?!  Something was lost in your interpretation - (or added) in the assumption that these days we are all more tolerant and respectful of people with alternative lifestyles. (and don't ask questions).

How could so many people miss this point?  Even the original writer of the article?!?! I'm not a balloonist, but I appreciated the balloon humor.  I would bet that others could corroborate my take on this.
Nudist Balloonist...that's funny! Made me laugh out loud.

And, this commercial is funny. How can anyone not love goofy. I love the drivers, "oh" as he turns around.
My biggest objection to this ad is that in encourages people to trust the view of the camera rather than looking over their own shoulder for themselves, and really watching what's behind them as they back out.  A camera has limited field of vision, and may not catch the whole picture.  I'd say it's needed MORE because the high back creates a major blind spot for backingup, as small children or animals may not be seen simply by looking over your shoulder.  Though, in that case, you'd need a view of the camera that you can see WHILE you're looking over your shoulder, as an enhancement.

I just find this to be really stupid.

I suppose it negates the legal requirements to look to where you're backing, or relieves legal responsibility if you run over someone/something that was outside the view of the camera?  Rubbish.

Does this mean I can affix a web-cam to my car, and don't have to look anymore when I back the car?

But, apparently the commercial does its job well - it has detracted most everyone from the limitations and overall stupidity of this extra 'feature'.  :p

Surely there's something better the Pilot offers than simply a camera mounted to the back?  That's more a gimmick than a feature... *rolls eyes*
The driver of the Pilot in the ad is Scott Parkin. Great actor and very funny. You can see his true acting chops at a hilarious website called nolaf.org.
Love the ads!!! they had me cracking up!!  BUT they made me think about buying Febreeezeee!!
to George T from Cayuga, NY.
I have 2 things to say...
Budweiser is no longer American,
and Everything in Wal-Mart is made in Chinese sweat shops....
There ya go.
Other than that, I think  the commercial is cute and much needed!  We need to laugh sometimes!  It doesn't mean that the commercial isn't stupid..... of course its stupid! That's why it's funny!  And whatever happened to accepting people for who/what they are?  I don't mind nudists, I probably would be very uncomfortable talking to one when they're in the buff..... but I would try to push through it.  Plus you come into this world naked. And when you die, they strip you of all your clothes (then redress you I know) But the point is, there is to much hate in this world, and that is why we are all going to die some nuclear bombed death someday.
Why do they have to show such ugly guys all the time?  Why not show good-looking guys for once?  Jesus.  Beauty on a man is only skin-deep, but ugly on a man goes straight to the bone.
