McDonald’s boasts about nutrition (really)

From “Fast Food Nation” to “Super Size Me,” McDonald’s has become the go-to villain in the United States’ obesity drama.

Not willing to become the de facto whipping boy, the company best known for its indulgent burgers and greasy fries has already added salads, fruits and other new menu options. Now, it’s defending the rest of its food lineup as well.

The “what we’re made of” campaign includes TV commercials, in-store promotions and a Web site boasting about its beef, chicken and other basic ingredients. In the coming weeks, the company also plans to add billboards and expand the Web site to include more information about cooking methods, suppliers and other practices.

McDonald's

Molly Starmann, McDonald’s director of U.S. marketing, said the company hasn’t changed the farming or preparation methods that have drawn so much criticism. The point of the campaign, she said, is simply to provide more information about what the company already does.

“Our customers love the taste of our food and they just had some questions about how it’s created,” she said.

The most striking thing about the campaign is that it exposes what the company is up against. Click on lettuce, and McDonald’s will tell you that it washes its lettuce “at least twice.” Under eggs, it notes that they are delivered to stores twice a week.

Forget quality or taste -- if a company has to dispel the myth that it doesn’t follow basic hygiene practices, it’s obviously in for an uphill battle.

Still, some of McDonald’s attempts to inform are strikingly uninformative. Click on “potatoes,” and you’ll get a blurb about why fries have salt on them. That’s not exactly going to answer burning questions about food production, healthfulness and what exactly is meant by the ingredient “natural beef flavor (wheat and milk derivatives).” Under tomatoes, the company only discloses what kind it likes to use in salads.

Elsewhere on the site, McDonald’s lets you build a meal and see its nutritional value and ingredients. Nutrition information also can now be found on the back of the company’s tray liners and on other packaging.

McDonald’s deserves credit for having the guts to make such information easily accessible, even if eaters may well cringe at the high fat content – including trans fats - and unpronounceable ingredients.

For example, parents may not be too pleased to realize that six pieces of Chicken McNuggets contain 15 grams of fat and include the ingredient “dimethylpolysiloxane added as an antifoaming agent.” The visual images conjured by the words “antifoaming” in food are plentiful, and none are pretty.

I'm not surprised by the "antifoaming" ingredient in the Mcnuggets. I have always thought they were the most mutant, freakish oddity of a food ever. They're like eating rubber wrapped in a cardboard film. I know some people like them, and to each his own, but I find them to be some kind of science experiment gone horribly wrong.
They actually switched the chicken nuggets to all white meat a few years ago so you don't get that scary rubber piece of grizzle that I remember so well from being a kid.  Too bad a haven't eaten at McDonalds in 4 or 5 years.  For them, not me!
Would you mind not spreading misinformation like the rest of the apocalyptically inclined liberal media? Food is food. Do you HONESTLY think that anyone worth letting live to suck down Social Security looks at McDonald's food and says "Mmm mmm! That sho' iz some healthy friggin fewdz!". That aside, it's not the most terrible thing in the world to eat. Everyone chums the water with "Grams of fat! ZOMG DOOMSDAY!" without bothering to realize that SOME fat is perfectly acceptable within a diet, as long as you're not eating it to excess. Three years ago I went on a diet where I ate fast food twice a day. I lost over 100 pounds on this diet in a year. All I did was limit my calorie intake, and it worked like a charm. But hey, fast food is the DEVIL. It's obvious I made a bargain with him to lose weight.
Fast food has its place in the scheme of things.  But it has become a crutch for those who don't want to take the time to prepare their own food.  If something seems to easy, be suspicious...
Snapple has been using the motto: "Made from the Best Stuff On Earth" since its inception. Is high-fructose corn syrup really the best thing on earth?? How dare they say that! But there's nothing illegal about suggesting such subjective ideas with the product. What's more sad is the masses that will say, "Hey, McDonald's is healthy now".
The McDonald's Southwest salad with grilled chicken is a phenomenal product - healthy, fresh, flavorful.  I eat it all the time and love it.  If someone else its their burgers and fries all the time, how is that McDonald's fault?  But for kids, they do not have the same decision making process as adults.  So if we can do something to get kids off of chicken nuggets and fries, that would be an accomplishment.
Everything is ok in moderation including McDonalds!
MMMMMM, dimethylpolysiloxane; just like mom used to make!
McD's has admittedly made strides, such as with reasonably fresh vegetable and fruit salads and parfaits, and reasonably decent-tasting grilled chicken.  But knowing how poisonously bad trans fats are, there is NO EXCUSE for not eliminating them from their fries - as Wendy's purportedly has, without noticeable (to me) difference in taste.
I just saw an interesing joke. It is of a person opening a box of organic food like lasagne. On the food preperations it said to add artificial flavorings and preservitives.
Coming from a food service and a science
We will all be eating at McDonald's within 15-20 years. Why? Because who better to master the science of creating The Locally Grown Pesticide Free Organic Dollar Menu? If I could eat all organic, nearly chemical free food for a buck then you better believe I'll be there for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
McDonald's will always be the bad guy, even when all of their competitors have "upsized" their meals, changing medium to large, large to well, really large, etc. I have worked for McD's for 5 years and generally eat there twice each day. I lost 20 pounds my first month and haven't gained it back in all that time. People simply have to watch how much they eat!
To Dan R. from Arlington: I couldn't agree more. “Everything in moderation” Everyting except for trans fat that is, which even minute amounts (2g) of tend to be detrimental to one's health.  Now, I am not one of the New York City Pinkos that thinks trans fat should be banned.  Our fore fathers fought & died for Americans to have the right to shove trans fat down their morbidly obese throats; however, I do think it would be in the company's best interest (and their customers’) to simply change cooking oil. Until then, I will be sucking down hamburgers from Wendy's & chowing on chicken (not biscuits- 3g trans fat per serving!) from KFC.
... what about the hormone filled franken-meats they use?  I'm a hell of a lot more worried about developing prostate cancer some day because of these foods than I am gaining weight by them.
I know I sadly speak for a very few, but I'll only eat cage free eggs from chickens allowed to eat an omnivorous diet and meats cut from strong, healthy animals grazing in large fields.
There's something to be said for an animal that can't live on its own without an injection of antibiotics and hormones.  These are things nature is clearly trying to kill, and I don't think feeding them to a stupid populous is going to benefit anyone other than the Grim Reaper.
Everyone's notion of the word "healthy" sadly falls on the idea of whether or not you'll get fat by eating it.  It is alarming, because there are so, so many deeper issues with our food than we allow ourselves to be aware of that are far more detrimental to our collective health than the amount of saturated fat in something.
Come on, McDonalds isn't the devil, people.  Let's choose a scapegoat for the obesity epidemic instead of putting the responsibility onto the overweight people themselves (myself, included).  McDonalds has never forcibly shoved any food item down my throat.  It's possible to gain weight, lose weight, or maintain while having fast food- the key is moderation, as I'm learning.
ALSO, the "Antifoaming agent" in the chicken nuggets that was so grandly pointed out-- is in the VEGETABLE OIL, people.  Duh.  And it's listed under "may include".  Read the ingredients.  Nice attempt at sensational journalism, though.
McDonalds has been testing the reduction and removal of trans-fats from products for over a year.  The general policy is to see if people notice the difference in taste before announcing it publicly.  Currently, the oil in use is mostly canola and has 0 trans fats in it.

As for the dimethylpolysiloxane, the article writer did not bother to note that it is in the "oil" to cut down on the amount of grease spattering that occurs when frozen fried products are placed in hot grease.  It isn't an ingredient in the food.  The trace amounts of it in the oil would be even more trace in anything you eat.  You're likely to get more sick eating Chinese food containing MSG(which is known to cause brain damage) than eating a chicken nugget.

I'm not some spokesperson for McDonalds.  I just happen to be a manager going on 5 years.  Sure, their food is fattening, but falsifying, generalizing, and misrepresenting information simply because you don't read the fine print is another sad example of the media.  If you don't want to become overweight, eat in moderation.  No fast food restaraunt forces food down your throat.  You choose to eat it.
The success of McDonalds and other fast food restaurants is not solely because it is a "crutch." Yes, people eat there because it's easy and convenient, but it's also CHEAP. It is cheaper to feed a family off of mcD's menu than it is to buy them healthy, (much less organic),  produce at the grocery store. Plus, time is money to the working classes. There is definitely an element of laziness in the obesity epidemic, but it seems the cheaper the food the less the nutritional value and vice versa. Food costs continue to rise. McD's always has a dollar menu.
People who regularly eat fast food should have to share that information with their health care providers, just like smoking.  They and smokers should both be forced to sign release forms so their states don't have to pay the costs for illnesses related to their unhealthy lifestyle choices.  All fast food ads aimed at children need to be banned.  Ronald McD needs to mount up on Joe Camel and ride into the sunset.  I feel sorry for people who think that McD's salads are tasty.  I hope you get to enjoy the real thing some day.
mcdonalds has indgenised cusine here at mumbai but still lot of improvments can be done in both food & general arrangements . i wonder if they ever take customer feedback
Wow, this article is misleading! Actually, the website says that the dimethylpolysiloxane is used in the VEGETABLE OIL that the chicken nuggets are cooked in.
So maybe they should hire Carl Roves.  He has truely has the ultimate gift of spin.  People will believe what supports their own perspectives and tastes no matter how little credibility it has.
I really don't understand why McDonald's is always under fire...is anyone making people eat there?  If someone is completely lured by advertising, it is there own fault.  As was said earlier - anything in moderation is ok.  Wasn't it in recent history that everyone was in an uproar over artificial sweetners?  Once again nobody forced people to drink diet sodas...they sure seem to still be on the shelves at the supermarket.
If you are overweight don't blame fast food...blame yourself for eating too much or go to the doctor to see if there is something else.  Responsibility...
I think that McDonalds is on the right path after the criticism which they are facig since several years now. They are not perfect but they are still immproving on it and I think we should not blame them anymore.As it is so cheap in prices everyone like to go there but it is customers fault and not the company's.
You are what you eat. Have a moderately sized salad and some veggies, and you should be ok. Have a Double Fatburger with cheese, and you may want to take a nap. It's such a shame in this "enlightened" age that most people consider themselves too "busy" to inform themselves about what they're putting into their bodies. The human body runs best on mostly veg, grains, and fruits, will some fats and protiens (meat, nuts, oils, etc) thrown in. It's even worse that in some parts of this country, convenience and even more so, cost, overrule the basic human need for fresh, healthy food, thus necessitating a dollar menu. Moderation is indeed the key, and not just to food, but to everything--but moderation is controlled by both conscious decision and ability (circumstantial or otherwise) to moderate.
I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THE REST OF U FOLKS BUT WHEN I READ A LABEL THAT SAYS "ALL BEEF" OR "ALL PORK" OR "ALL CHICKEN" AD INFINITUM AD NAUSEUM
HEY!! ALL I WANNA KNOW IS WHAT PART OF THE COW, PIG, CHICKEN OR WHATEVER IS REALLY IN THAT PACKAGE!! I MEAN, MOST OF THE THINGS ON A DOMESTICATED FARM ANIMAL - I  D O   N O T  W A N T  T O   E A T !! HA
Who has time to spend one hour cooking, eating, and cleaning when you work 70 hours a week and also have to take care of your children? (And if you wonder who works 70 hours a week, the guy at the gas station I go to works 12 hour shifts 7 days a week every week, the women running a chinese restaurant down the street from me works 10 hours 6 days a week every week)
My only question becomes:  Who is doing the testing of the "healthiness" of this food?  Is it McDonald's, or an outside agency?  Personally, I haven't eaten this garbage in over 4 years.  Call it overreaction to the Supersize Me movie, or just general dislike for the food.  And to those people who claim to eat this stuff twice a day, and are "losing lots of weight?"  No one believes that.  Are you counting a single fry as a meal?
I am overweight and I don't even eat fast food more than once a week if at all. I'm overweight because I snack too much and overpile my dinner plate. Don't blame restaurants for weight problems. Everyone has the wonderful gift of free will. It is also helpful to educate yourself about the food you're eating if you care enough about your health so you don't let yourself be misled by false advertising.
Size 3. I eat McDonald's everyday and have a six pack.

And I don't believe in salads..ever.

Apparently someone missed the exercise memo.
Tess,

are you crazy? Unless you eat only from the dollar menu, store bought home cooked food is by far less expensive...let's see, at the local discount grocery store (read: not expensive places like Ralphs, QFC, add your own)

$2.50 for a 3lb bag of potatoes that will give family of 4 at least two meals worth of French fries.
$3.00 for corn/whatever oil you use that can be reused several times if stored correctly.
$6.00 for a large chub of ground beef
$1.85 for 8 buns (read at least 1.5 meals)
$3.00 for a 12 pack of soda ( do you really need more than a 12oz can of soda per meal?
$1.00 for an onion that can be used for all of the meals
and lets just say about $5.00 for rest of condiments

total: $18.85 for enough food to feed a family of 4 at least two solid meals...so $9.43 a meal

Dollar menu:

8 puny cheese burgers (for two meals): $8.00
8 puny bits of fries (compared to how much you could make with 3lbs of potatoes over two meals) $8.00
8 sodas (do they have dollar menu sodas?) $8.00

Total for just enough food to feed a family of 4 two meals: $24.00

Um, I'll take $18.00...and for those who might use the excuse of what your time is worth, we wouldn't be having this discussion if you could afford a maid/butler to cook for you. Oh, did I mention I have a family of 7, work an average of 50 hours a week and I do the shopping and cook/prepare our meals (which is how I know how much this food costs).
most of you trash it, yet mcdonald's is the only company in the world where their employees can earn college credits in business from mcdonalds classes. and its one of the most wide-spread and well known restaurants in the world. im sure apples, low fat milk, salads, and all white meat chicken is better than what most americans are eating. im glad to read that people are actually not blaming mcdonalds, and some are taking the blame, not places with cool toys for kids and convenient prices and a quick fix.
I find it very funny how their marketing person states “Our customers love the taste of our food and they just had some questions about how it’s created,”

Just had some questions. That's like a cigarette company saying "they just wondered why they were dying of cancer...and we casually told 'them' it was because they smoked our addictive product...no big deal."

Get real Molly the Mouthpiece...there's nothing casual about McDonalds toxic food. Of course, if the overweight people who live on it could control themselves we wouldn't be having this discussion now would we?

         ~~~~EXCUSE ME!!!!!!!!!!!!~~~~~    ..
I work at a mcdonald's in washington state, and let me inform you on a few choice pieces of insider information.
1). The "Grilled" chicken in the salads is prepared in the following way: Frozen chicken placed on a grill, that has been sprayed-YES SPRAYED- with LIQUID BUTTER. Supposedly, to prevent sticking; but really it's to add flavor.
2.) Cinnamelts are frozen, and heated in a "Q-er" which is just a high powered microwave.
3.) All the food is cooked ahead of time, before you order, and is stored in "Cabinets" which is just a heater, to keep the food warm. REGULARLY, instead of throwing away the old food when the timer on the food item has expired, they just push the reset button, to save themselves the trouble of making fresh product and replacing the old. DONT YOU DARE BE FOOLED BY ANY OTHER COMMENT. THIS HAPPENS IN ALL RESTAURANTS.----"mmmm! These chicken nuggets, Quarter pounder, Big Mac, etc. Just tastes so good and fresh! yay!" NOT!!!!
4). Surprise! The ice cream scoop that the Hard ice cream is scooped with is left in the same warm, dirty water all day long. "mmm mold!"
5). Parfaits are made ONCE or TWICE daily, more if they actually manage to run out. They are just yogurt, and frozen fruit in a container. Be weary of the blueberries, since only FIVE, YES COUNT THEM, FIVE, are used in each parfait, the box of blueberries lasts for forever, so they are most likely going to be freezer burned.
I could think of a thousand more things to type here, but I don't want McDonald's team of lawyers to swoop down on me for telling the truth. Happy Trails!
~C.
Sorry but most of what McDonalds serves can't even qualify as FOOD. REAL FOOD is raw and unadulterated. What McD's serve has been classified as FOOD-LIKE SUBSTANCES. And frankly I think anyone that lives on this kind of diet ( and feeds it frequently to their children ) is just lazy and completely in the dark about health and nutrition.  There are PLENTY of healthy, whole food meals that can be served in a  matter of minutes. The " I work all week " excuse just doesn't cut it. LAZINESS... PURE LAZINESS is the excuse. Most of you don't have any idea what REAL FOOD is !
 McD's is also known as one of the WORST fast food companies when it comes to using products raised and produced from the  most INHUMANE suppliers on the planet... food from animals tortured and abused on factory farms, pumped full of antibiotics and hormones because of their absolutely deplorable "living conditions" ( if you can even call them that... these poor animals live in what is tantamount to huge concentration camps  ). If that's the kind of industry you fast food junkies want to sustain it also proves  ignorance and indifference to the suffering of other beings and negligence for your own health and that of your family. Do you REALLY want to shove this chemical concoction of  Frankenfoods down your kids throats, or your own for that matter  ?
Not to worry about the fat, cholesterol and diabetes associated w/this garbage... but just think... all those chemicals over time can and will lead to some life-threatening health conditions... cancer, tumors, kidney disease, pancreatic and liver diseases, IBS and so forth.
MMMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmm.. .dig in.
I once heard a very keen observation in regards to fast food putting their healthy foot forward.
"Going to a fast food joint for healthy food is like going to a bar for water."
SC...You are awfully judgmental.  You're like the guy on the street telling everyone they're going straight to hell if they don't change their ways.
You're not going to convince anyone of anything by calling them lazy.
It's not just McDonald's that does this - it is every single fast food company and the vast majority of food you buy in packages from the grocery store.  Don't fool yourself that the "grilled chicken" even remotely resembles a piece of chicken you could make for yourself at home once they get done injecting and spraying all the extra sugar, chemicals and crap into it and that is the "HEALTHY" option!!!
Don't be afraid of food people - but eat real food...vegetables, fruit, whole grains (and not ones that have been processed into sugary cereals and slapped with a whole grain label).  It isn't all about weight either - if you are a size 3 and eat fast food twice a day and smoke there is a lot more going on inside your body that will cause health problems no matter what size clothes you wear.
Food is not the enemy we have made it out to be, but people need to be willing to take responsibility for themselves and their health.  We are the first generation to have a SHORTER life expectancy than our parents - is this a coincidence that the rise of fast food and over-processed fake food has taken place this generation?  I don't think so!
"People who regularly eat fast food should have to share that information with their health care providers, just like smoking.  They and smokers should both be forced to sign release forms so their states don't have to pay the costs for illnesses related to their unhealthy lifestyle choices.  All fast food ads aimed at children need to be banned.   . . .   Kenneth . . . "
You are reason I oppose nationalizing health care.
Didn't KFC a few years ago try to fool us into believing fried chicken wasn't bad for you?  The fast food companies have no shame.  Oh well - I have yet to see the healthy McDonalds ads, so they must be running them during FOX News.  Those viewers will believe anything.
To C. who said the parfaits are made "ONCE or TWICE daily, more if they actually manage to run out."  Not true. The McDonalds near me makes them ONCE a day and if you ask for one after 5 pm they tell you they don't have any more! One time I asked them how they ran out and they admitted, well we don't have them made. How hard is it to dump yogurt and fruit into a cup? And 9 times out of 10 the fruit is still frozen.
Still I am glad they are offering healthier options (snack wrap and parfait is not a bad lunch), though disappointed they discontinued the inexpensive salads real quick, along with the larger fruit parfait, which was a good breakfast or lunch on its own.
It's surprising that no one has touched on the the one thing McD should be ashamed of:  Brainwashing children.  The current generation was raised by the babysitter also know as the boob-tube, where every 15 minutes of every program has commercials directed not to parents, but to children.  Countless children's first word is "McDonald's".  How many times have you seen someone's child throwing a fit in a restaurant yelling "I want McDonald's", not because they really like it, but because they've been brainwashed.  Then once they get it, the toy seals the deal.
Why is it that most of the people who are complaining are from california... If you don't like it don't eat it!! It's that simple
I feel bad for all the people who eat their salads, thinking they're healthy.  The salads at McDonald's and Wendy's (don't know about BK, or even if they have any) have as much calories and fat as their burgers.  Even then, during his work for Super Size Me, Morgan Spurlock found that less than 5% (forget the exact number) at several locations of McDonald's actually order the "healthy" options.  It's just to make them look good.
I work at McDonalds and I love it.
I probably eat there atleast once a day. My skin is clear, and I'm underweight, if anything.
Hell, I even eat McDonalds when I'm NOT at work.
And above, whoever said McDonalds leads to IBS, is wrong, IBS can be triggered by McDs, but not caused by it.
This article is ridiculous. Yeah we do a lot of crap like microwave our Cinnamelts and butter our grilled chicken, but who cares? It's FAST FOOD and it's not claiming not to be - it's just pointing out the few, HEALTHIER options available. Parfaits are refigerated/almost frozen for up to 6 hours. And then we throw 'em out and make new ones.
Gah. When someone inserts a tube in your throat and forces McDonalds down it, then you can complain. Until then, shut up and enjoy your Wendy's - where the fries are bigger and the chili is from yesterday's meat.
They built a new McDonald's right out front of my development about a year ago.  Surprisingly, it is not getting the business it expected.  Granted, I wouldn't dine there if you paid me to.  But I was shocked that people are finally starting to realize just how horrible this stuff is for your body.  I always get a giggle when I jog by on a nice day and see people at the drive-thru in their SUV thinking that getting a "diet" coke will make them lose weight!  All I can do is laugh because trying to talk sense into those people is pointless-- they have no self-control or self-worth.
I don't know if you all have noticed, but read some of those "20 Worst Foods in the World" articles and you'll find that McDonald's is only on there once at most! Don't be deceived that a sit-down dinner is somehow healthier than fast food. In reality, the portions are much larger and the food is usually soaking in fat and salt. I believe it was Macaroni Grill that was actually labeled as the worst place to eat ever. It may be wise to come down from the soap box and re-evaluate why you think McDonald's is so terrible.
Why use antifoaming agents? Foam is yummy.
why just pick on McDonalds? packaging for the ground beef in Taco bells food comes as a greyish, clay like substance in a box stamped with "marginally edible meat product"
yum, sounds like dinner
There is absolutely NO reason whatsoever to buy anything from McDonalds....It is disgusting non-food and is full of harmful chemicals and fats and salt.  Disgusting. I have not eaten fast food in almost ten years...It Is very possible to live without this horrendous place and its gross "food".  Whoever said "anything in moderation", why eat at any of these places at all? When I was a child ( i am nearing 29) we NEVER ate fast food for dinner.  Always a homecooked meal.  My mother had six children and a job and still, no Fast Food Slop!
It is laziness on the part of parents and the whole generation of "I want, I want, I want....gimmmeeee gimmmeee gimmmmeee" children. well hope you are happy when you give your children diabetes, cavities, extra pounds and clogged arteries.  You are forming their eating habits for the rest of their life so teach them how to cook!
I never crave any of the fast food places because we had "real" food instead.  Always had a vegetable or two, a protein, some sort of carbs and NO SODA. The closest thing we had to sugary drinks was JUICY JUICE. I am not saying it was all lowfat but it was alway food. Cauliflower head with cheese, Salad with dressing, Lasagna, Stew, Meatloaf, Grilled chicken.mashed potatoes, Peas all of these appeared on our table regularly......
Parent need to be responsible for their health and the health of their children!!!!!!!!!!  Looking for healthful choices in a fast food place is stupid.  Go to the grocery store cook a meal for goodness sake.
I am now a vegetarian (and have been for almost 15 years) and never have the need or urge to eat at a place that serves "nuggets" or happy meals with a toy. It is just the opposite....take a look at how those nuggets are made, from start to finish and see if you think any of that food can be healthful.
Makes my stomach turn  : (
>The success of McDonalds and other fast food
>restaurants is not solely because it is a "crutch."
>Yes, people eat there because it's easy and
>convenient, but it's also CHEAP. It is cheaper to
>feed a family off of mcD's menu than it is to buy
>them healthy, (much less organic),  produce at the
>grocery store. Plus, time is money to the working
>classes.
I have to disagree with that.
People just don't know how to manage their money or time.
Cost of dinner for a whole family:
1 box of whole wheat pasta (2 dollars)
1 jar of name-brand tomatoe sauce (2 dollars).
1 half gallon of milk/real juice (2 dollars)
It's not fancy, but it's cheap and quick (if that is someone's main goals) and it's healthier than McDonalds.
Total cost: 6 dollars!
I want to see someone feed 2 adults and several small children at McDonlands for less than 6 dollars per meal.  Not going to happen.  Plus it's super quick and easy to boil water.  It will take you longer to go through the drive-thru!
