Thick, buttery … insurance?

If you’re a has-been celebrity looking for work - and what has-been celebrity isn’t looking for work, by definition - the good news is that there are other job prospects out there besides lame reality television shows. There’s also Geico.

The insurance company has for some time now been employing the likes of Little Richard, Joan Rivers and even Charo to “interpret” real people’s stories of how well Geico dealt with their insurance claims.

Maybe the well of real D-list celebrities is running dry, because now the company is turning to … a syrup bottle.

In a new commercial, Mrs. Butterworth editorializes as a Geico customer recounts her tale of woe - or, actually, her tale of getting a nick in her windshield repaired. It’s not very compelling stuff, but Mrs. Butterworth makes the best of it,  intoning, “Oh, dear, broken glass sends shivers down my bottle!

Mrs. Butterworth isn’t as funny as Little Richard or as annoying as Joan Rivers  , and she likely won’t be as provocative as Charo, whose ad got the company in hot water when the Connecticut attorney general charged that it could have left the false impression that the insurance company can fix cars directly.

Still, the talking syrup bottle gets points for nostalgia.  But what’s funny about the ad – and all the others in the celebrity spokesperson series – is that the “real” customers all but completely ignore their celebrities’ wacko antics.

Also, whereas Little Richard et al appeared comfortable sticking to the insurance pitch, Mrs. Butterworth can’t resist the opportunity to hawk herself.

“It was a piece of cake. Or maybe more like hot pancakes,” she says of the claim process.

And when all is said and done, she declares, “Now I feel rich. Thick and buttery, too.”

Not surprisingly, the Geico ad comes as The Blackstone Group, which purchased Mrs. Butterworth’s and other brands last year, is working to revive the syrup brand with an ad of its own that offers a trip down memory lane.

It’s interesting to see a montage of cute kids through the decades, but when it comes to pancakes, we’re still sticking with real maple syrup.

some of the Geico commercials are completely state of the art stupid and a waste of TV time....what little i watch of it anyway.  However, the butterworth idea was sheer originality and deserves 2 thumbs up.  now, if only Geico insurance itself was worthy....
My hands-down favorite was Peter Graves saying "So I put on some tangerine lip gloss and answered the door" -- it's so great to see him again, especially now that syndicated re-runs of "Mission: Impossible" are on every night!
Sorry, but the Giego ads featuring "has-beens" make me want to barf and would keep me from ever considering Gieco for insurance; Also, they lie about being lower cost than other companies.
I usually don't much care for Geico's celebrity commercials, but this one is laugh-out-loud fantastic.  Of course. it left me wanting to eat pancakes more than buy insurance, but I'm not complaining. IHOP anyone?  :)
The other geico "real actors" and whomever, made me want to flip the channel. Some were pretty good, but I have to say that Mrs. Butterworth was a great ad.
I loved the Gecko but it is like no one knew what to do with him. The Otter was adorable. Mrs. Butterworths was cute. You could keep the rest.
Never could stand the caveman ads.
Love the lizard.
Cox Cable has some good ones on right now that will crack you up.
The "Did you know" ads are great. Did you know that was not a real apple?.....Just for decoration?....
Then she sputters out these white looking pieces of the apple, looks like squares of styrofoam. I fell out of my chair. :)
What about Charo & pancakes?
I like the gecko best. He's  cute and appealing( of course he was designed to be) and the Aussie voice fits him perfectly. 'Ray, Gecko!
Is the voice of Mrs Butterowrth the same woman who played Flora McMichaels on The Real McCoys??  Somebody find out who the voice of  Mrs Butterworth is and let me know!
Maybe if GEICO didn't spend so much on advertising they could reduce my insurance rate.
ha everytime i see this commercial i find myself laughing (: the same goes for when i walk past her syrup bottle at the store. and the tiny house one was great... made me laugh. and i think i might just change insurance [not out of high school, i dont need any] just so i can say that i bought insureance from a freaking talking syrup bottle (;

i love the way she says "they just put a logo right over my face!" [sounds like something anthony or ian from smosh might say with a nice thumbs up and a smile/hair flip]
Cute Commercial but,
Are you that freakin broke that you have to file an insurance claim for a windshield?  Wouldn't the insurance companies JUST LOVE that?  What a way to jack up rates for 3 to 5 years for a $250.00 repair.  And, what does that say about how low of a deductible "she" must have in order to even put that claim in??? THe commercial is cute, but it just goes to prove these folks aim at the "lowest common denominator"  Thanks, but no thanks.  I'll keep my Prud/High POint with a real agent (who happens to be the son of my next door neighbor, and who I've had since 1990 and still going strong.
