Face-off: Domino’s dessert pie

Sometimes it’s not so much the ad that’s weird, it’s just pimping a product that’s so strange weirdness can’t be helped.

We haven’t actually tried Domino’s new Oreo Dessert Pizza, so we can’t comment on whether it’s any good or not. But it sounds like something concocted in a pothead’s dorm room VERY late at night. It looks like a pizza crust with crushed cookies and a lot of frosting.

Not that we’re pizza snobs. We spent the longest year and a half of our life in rural Oregon and the chain definitely had the best pie within 100 miles. And at least Domino's has avoided serving up that barbecue-sauce-and-chicken abomination that seems to be on every place’s menu.

Domino's

“As you can imagine it tastes exactly like an Oreo cookie,” company spokesperson Dana Harville says. They launched the dessert Aug. 27, and it’s in all their markets “for a limited time only.”

How limited? Any other dessert pies in the pipeline? Harville won’t say – competitive reasons, you know.

The ad, created by the JWT agency, seems to have been inspired by the “Got Milk” moustache. Except that was cute and catchy (if at this point a bit overused). This is just a little creepy. A woman tells two men they have some “stuff” on their face. The older of them points out it’s simply the moustache you get from eating the Oreo Pizza. The other adds that he has one too, it’s just not as filled out. Then there is this “Courtship of Eddie’s Father” bit where the older man tells him that someday, his will fill out also.

The weird part is the guys look about the same age. Is the more “mature” guy dad, older brother or stranger that just came in off the street? The ad never says.

You can watch the spot here.

Speaking of bad table manners as a way of selling fast food, how goth can you be with cheese all over your face, Taco Bell?

THIS AD IS DISGUSTING TO ME...IT'S AS WEIRD AS THE BURGER KING ADS WITH THE WEIRD GUY RUNNIBG ON THE FOOTBALL FIELD & WAKING UP IN BED WITH THE OTHER GUY
This is one of the dumbest commercials advertising one of the most disgusting food products I've seen in a long time. Being from New Haven, Connecticut, Home of the World's Best Pizza, I can't imagine ANYONE enjoying the crap Domino's churns out. Such a shame.....
I think this ad is hilarious!  However I think I'm in the target market so that makes sense.  As a side note I  hardly eat pizza and would NEVER order an oreo pizza.  gross.
Is if the cookie by itself wasn't enough.
"Another slice of cookie pizza?"
"Sure ma... just get it for me. I can't get out of the chair"
That is one stupid ad !
Aww, I thought it was funny. I was expecting his whole head to be covered by the end. I wouldn't buy the product though. I don't like things that are too sweet. I get mad when dunkin donuts gives me extra suger rather than the "2" that i asked for.
Right on!  I love that line.  I laugh everytime I see this commercial.  I will try the oreo pizza and try to get a mustache.  Right on!
Curious to know where in rural Oregon you lived...espcially if Domino's was the best option. Agreed, the Oreo Cookie Pizza sounds like something late night college potheads thought up; ironic the commercial seems to reflect the same! On a side note the best pizza place in Oregon is either Hot Lips or Escape from New York!
I thought it was funny and a little creepy at the same time.  But I'm ok with that. Most of the time I just change the channel at commercials.  I saw it and both me and my 14 year old son looked at each other and said "What was that?"
stupid ad? what? that is crazy talk.

This ad is "super chocolaty"
This is one stupid ad AND a turnoff to boot. Who thinks black crumbly "stuff" sticking to anyone's face is appetizing?  Good thing it's not a dog food commercial.
The weirdest part (and I had to hit the 7 second rewind on the DVR to figure it out) was that the "older, wiser guy's" cookie mustache actually GROWS throughout the commercial. In one shot it's just a `stache, in the next, a goatee, and finally a full-fledged beard. AND he doesn't even take another bite of pizza. WEIRD.
I think it's a bit weird too. Of course, you have to suspend reality for most ads anyway these days, but to get an Oreo 'mustache and beard' that thick on your face, you'd to slather it on with a knife. Otherwise, you got some weird growth goin' on there dudes. Seek out thy dermotologist quickly and wear a sack over your face.
The ad was kinda funny the first few times I saw it, but in my part of the country, they play the darn thing every advertising cycle.  I am so totally and completely tired of it, that I'd probably NEVER purchase one of the stupid things.
This is gross, Tried it the other day..UUGGHH!!!! It was just plain horrible........
We did try the oreo dessert pizza at the request of our kids.  All of us agreed it was awful, like eating cardboard.  Don't buy this!  It's definitely not worth it.
and hence....the continuing degredation of the USA.
I found the ad kind of cute, but the Oreo pizza idea itself seems discusting. Or as we say to our kids here in Minnesota, "Don't eat that, that's Yishy."
disgusting but hilarious. very funny.
The oreo pie is disgusting!  I love cookies but not with pizza dough.  Don't bother.
I liked the ad. I think it was the only way to launch such a crazy product. I thought the casting and the acting were perfect and just silly enough so the idea of an Oreo pizza doesn't sound all that crazy in comparison.
The ad is wierd but memorable.  I don't think the two guys look remotely the same age.  The older guy looks to be in his late 30s to early 40's.  The younger guy is an adolesent, under 20.  They could totally be father and son.
Oreos in and of themselves aren't bad. I actually love 'em. This "pizza" tho, or more exactly those, ugh, Oreo goatees & 'staches make me think the diners opted to eat messy foods for a week and avoid anything resembling a napkin or even washing so as to let it all just collect into an unappetizing glob.
This ad would fit in right before the station returns to the news & their top story on obesity in America.
Had the oreo pizza, took it to an inhome candle party, everyone loved it. Don't knock it till you try it. Not something you'll eat if you are watching your weight but definitly a treat. Stupid commercial yes, bad product no. By the way, all new products Domino's puts on the market are thought up in yearly employee competitions in Michigan. These are aired on the Food Network now and then (seen it in July). The person who wins this recieves a $5000.00 cash prize. Honestly people should research topics before voicing an opinion, there would be a lot less nonsense out there and no I am not saying you have to like the product, but if something is different it doesn't mean it is connected to drugs and partying. It just means someone somewhere was using their imagination to try to make a boring day a little more enjoyable for anyone willing to lighten up.
This is the most disgusting food concept EVER...it's not so much the commercial (which is, admittedly, strange) it's the the food that is awful!  Seriously, does America REALLY need another fat-laden desert on the menu.  And this one doesn't even look appealing....what is it, a pizza crust with crushed oreos and vanilla frosting...it's just sick what fast food chains will feed to people.
let's see how much more crap we can create to bring right to the doors of overweight americans who dont even have to leave the LAzy Boy to eat!
I think this ad is gross.  It definitely is turning me off of ordering a cookie pizza.  I get the dessert pizza idea, but this is just plain gross.
It was sort of like looking at a wreck on the highway - you know you shouldn't be watching it.  But, whoever mentioned the Burger King ads is on target - those ads just plain give me the creeps.  Scary.
Actually I found this commercial to be fresh and entertaining. I probably would even have a bite or two just to satisfy my sweet tooth after a spicy pizza. I was certainly less offended than by  commercials for E.D. that show couples in side by side bath tubs overlooking the ocean.
This add is the sweetness!  I love the ad, got a good laugh.  Not so sure about Oreo pizza though.
THe main problem as I see it, is that the product they are advertising STINKS.  Have you tried it?  I admit to being more of a Hydrox guy then an Oreo guy, but what they have has some sort of marshmallow on it along with something that might be the filling from the Oreos, and the whole thing is a mess.  I have to admit to not being stoned when I ate it- maybe I'd be less critical of the lack of taste if I had been.  Better luck next time, folks.
My teenage son finds this commercial funny...but as a parent - it's lame, and does nothing to entice a parent to buy it.... I guess Domino's is hoping our children now have enough money to start ordering & paying for dinner.  ~rolling eyes~
The idea of a desert pizza is not new. The Cici's Pizza Buffet chain found in many states has been offering a "Pizza Apple Pie" for some time now. Its basically an open faced apple pie shaped like a pizza.

Yeah, y'all can laugh and sneer now, but when the
"Deep Fried Vomit" ads come out this spring, you'll eat your words!
Record it on your DVR and fast forward through it with no sound.  It's pretty damn funny then.
I LOVE this ad. I think it's really hilarious. And it seemed pretty obvious that the big-beard guy was the dad and the two other people were his two teenage kids. I don't think it'd be a stretch to call him 40-ish, which would work. I'd probably never eat an oreo pizza (too crunchy? seems unnatural) but this definately makes me remember Dominos.
Nice to know the Burger King ad guy found a new gig.
Some folks like things more straight-forward, like velcro straps for shoe laces. I can see where this ad would confuse and aggravate some of that ilk...
the older guy does look older than the other guy, like father and son. it's just hard to tell because of the distracting oreo beard.
yeah that was pretty much the weirdest thing i've ever seen.
This ad is awesome!  Who cares if the pizza would be gross (although I think it would be good...I haven't yet tried it).  It sure beats all those stupid drug commercials!
best pie within 100 miles? dominos is the worst pizza in any town I've ever lived in. it is the only pizza that i've come accorss that was, on one occassion, inedible. that's right. INEDIBLE! that's hard to do with pizza. we through it out. didn't even bother to call.
This ad is hilarious, I don't know what's wrong with you people.
Funny stuff.  I love the strange ads.  The pie looks gross, but the older man counseling his assumed son about "giving it time" is classic stuff.  LOL.  I just don't quite understand why his keeps growing?  Is it because he ate more?
I love this ad. Cracks me up every time I see it. The look on the guys face along with the Oreo beard. Luv it.
Sure beats all the Viagra, Cialas and the feminine hygiene ads. Especially the "roller coaster pad"
Whaat?? This ad is hilarious! Anyone notice that the "older" guy's beard gets fuller and thicker every time the camera switches back to him? So, you can only imagine that if it grows that quickly between sentences, by 5 oclock he'll look like a cookied Sasquatch. Do I have to explain everything to you people ???
this ad is brilliant! even though i probably won't try the oreo pizza (i'm a traditionalist when it comes to pizza), this is some funny stuff.
I've had this...but before the ridiculous commercials started touting it.  Wasn't that good, the Oreos are stale and soft, and this stupid commercial made me regret funding it!  These are even worse than those Sonic commercials that make me want to throw my shoe at the TV.
I'm so glad you said something about this awful commercial and food.  I think it has hit a new low in horribly unhealthy gross fast food.  A sugared crust with crushed oreos topped with frosting and chocolate sauce.  I don't think there are enough bong hits in the universe to make that appealing.  But there will be someone who will gulp it down just because its there.  We've got to do something about that horrifying junk that these restaurants are shoving down our throats.

Its really sad and dangerous...
I loved it! I don't know why, it's definately creepy.
The artistic creativity of this advertisement is simply revolutionary!
