ABOUT ADS OF THE WEIRD

With Ads of the Weird, MSNBC.com takes a look at some of the oddest, most eye-catching, controversial and just plain interesting advertising out there today. Baby Got Burgers?

Back in the 1990s, Sir Mix-A-Lot made a lot of women with a little extra bootie into lifelong fans with his instant classic “Baby Got Back.” Before that, Van Halen helped cement its ’80s-era big hair/bad boy image with the classic “Hot For Teacher.”

 Now along comes Carl’s Jr.

Just in time for back to school, the fast food restaurant’s latest ad features a teacher shaking her booty in front of a classroom of ogling, pubescent white boys rapping about how they like “flat buns” - on their patty melt, that is -  while their teacher bumps and grinds. Sample lyric: “Stand sideways, girl, you disappear.”

Carl's Jr.

The ad is meant to promote the sandwich’s flat burger buns, although one can’t help but note that, at 570 calories and 32 grams of fat, the patty melt is not likely to make your own buns any flatter.

While the commercial could have been a clever nod to pop culture’s past, Carl’s Jr. opts for trashy over witty, and the spot comes off as crass rather than clever.

Click here to watch the ad.

Of course, Carl’s Jr. is also the company behind Paris Hilton’s raunchy car wash ad of a couple years back. Perhaps the company won’t mind a little backlash, as long as it gets people talking, and teenage boys watching.

It’s just the latest entrant in the ever-competitive race for the most attention-grabbing, if not tasteful, fast food commercial.

Jack in the Box got a lot of press earlier this year when it implied that its competitors’ Angus burgers come from a less savory part of a cow’s body than Jack in the Box’s new sirloin ones. A legal brouhaha ensued, but a judge allowed Jack in the Box to continue to make Angus the butt of its jokes.

Also wading into the waters of sophomoric sex jokes, Dairy Queen recently ran a series of ads implying that one of its new Blizzard desserts was created after a soft serve ice cream and a waffle cone got it on. The image in one spot of two adults in a candlelit bedroom, dressed in ridiculous ice cream and waffle outfits, is more awkward than amusing. Note to advertisers: Sex doesn’t sell everything.

A summer favorite has been Wendy’s series of silly commercials featuring a guy in a red braid wig, reminiscent of the classic Wendy’s logo.

The ads feature our red-wigged hero questioning why people are doing what everyone else is doing  -- kicking trees, jumping blindly into a massive hole -- when they can demand better.

The ads manage to be quirky and memorable without resorting to bootie jokes or amorous meetings between food. Thanks, Wendy’s.

I don't have the tendency to make decisions of where or what I eat based on whether I like the commercials. I don't really find the Carl's Jr ad offensive but just stupid. I find the Wendy's commercials just as stupid, though. In spite of this, I happen to like some food items from each chain. The one thing I find intelligent about Carl's Jr ads is the fact that the stupid part gets your attention (like a car wreck), then the main selling point is that they show the advertised food item large, nearly full screen. If an ad spot is going to get me to try their food, guess what? Seeing the food is what will get me. People kicking trees and screaming a catch phrase? Not so much.
lighten up...its only a commercial!
"Where's the Beef?"  Now that's writing.
What ever happened to America's sense of humor? Promoting sex between teachers and students?  Ridiculous. You guys watch way too much Dateline NBC; you are taking it so literal.

Fantasies about a sexy teacher are something just about every male can relate to.  The song is preposterously catchy. Kids love it, and it's an ad for young males not for families. Very successful in my opinion.

Carls has topped the tasteless ad list for years. Always promotes slobs that don't shave, can't eat without dropping food all over, even guys tossing unfinished Carls burgers over their shoulderonto the ground.  No class at all.  Actually I like the flat buns commercial.  Wish I were back in school again.
The Hardee's/Carl Jr. advertisements have increasingly become more and more disgusting and misogynistic.  I can admit to grabbing the occasional breakfast biscuit at Hardee's once upon a time, but I've not been there in a few years because of the advertisements (Bo Jangles has better biscuits anyway).
I'm sorry, but I'm a 48-year old Black woman and I honestly think the ad is hilarious! Sorry teachers! I'll just have to go to detention after school!
I absolutly cannot STAND the Carl's Junior ad campaign UNTIL NOW!  I LOVE the flat buns ad, I am personally glutial challenged myself and have taken this song on as my new anthem!  I never liked the old ads where eating one of their burgers means getting it all over the place, but this ad does not depict a single bongo lipped athlete anywhere!  I'm not a fan of Carl's Junior food but I do like a good patty melt now and again, I can't wait to try one!
I'm sick of the scantly clad women that choose to be exploited by advertisers and getting boys, young men, and men heated up.  There is a time and place for everything and prime time sex isn't the right time or place.  Let's get back to some basic moral ground - respect ourselves and others!  Sex SHOULDN'T SELL ANYTHING!
The Ad may not be intended for many readers on here. I personally don't like the Ad, but recognize that Carls Jr. is not trying to promote to women. That is one of the reasons they removed salad bars from their restaurants years ago. The target audience is primarily men. Now it seems that it's targeting the up and comming generation of pop culture. At the end of the day, it all comes down to increasing the bottom line of a company.
Great ad.

If you know where I can buy a neon blackboard like that, let me know.

Keep up the good work, Carl's.
And I DO mean "keep it UP."

:)
I think the ad is funny. There are bigger issues in the world right now.
I think some people need to relax a little.  I thought the Carl's Jr commercial was hilarious.  It isn't using sex to sell its product - its using unsexy (maybe you think "flat buns" are hot, I don't know).  Don't you think it's a little ironic?  It's kinda like a Weird Al song if anything.  I hope they make more commercials like it.  Some people get offended by everything (especially people posting here).  Another irony is you people that are offended by these kinds of ads probably think Ms. Spears looked too fat the other night at the VMAs...
GREAT AD. TIRED OF THE BORING BURGER COMMERCIALS
If you don`t like Carl`s jr then don`t eat there. But you have to relize that there are going to be people who will eat there regardless of the commercials being a bit distasteful. Its a free country. Your not being made to eat there. And so what if they put a hot chic in the ad, if they put a hot guy in the ad you women would drool and then run to your little corners and yapp your mouths off about "Oh did you see his this!" or "Oh did you see him that!" We are all sex driven . Maybe men are more than women, you want us as bad as we want you so shut your mouth  and eat your burger!
I think they are GREAT!  They are funny and I will purchase a sandwich from them for each one of you who say how terrible they are.  Viva La Carls JR!
Target marketing young men. Big deal. Get over it.
I think these ads regarding sexy pictures or talk of condoms, erectial disfunction, vaginal dryness etc, should not be aloud to sell ad space on tv, especially before 9:00p.m., it gives our children the wrong message.  That you have to be sexy or show your body parts for people to pay attention to you.  That is totally against Christian morals, and makes it seem ok for our children to do the same.  I am ashamed to watch alot of the commercials with my children present in the room, in fact I do not wish to see these commercials either.  I am actually outraged that burger king and other food franchises get away with such raunchy ads.  There needs to be a stop to all the sex sells crap.
I actually think that the Carls Jr. ad is very funny and for someone to say they are not going to eat somewhere because of a commerical is stupid.  People who say something like that should turn there tv's off and stay at home for the rest of there lives.
I think the Carls Jr. commercial with the "flat buns"
is funny. Being a white girl with flat buns of my own. My Husband and I laugh every time it comes on and we plan on trying the sandwhich. It does look really good. I see nothing wrong with the commercial.
Although the Carl's Jr. commercial is offensive, trust me, it has got nothing on the African American man singing and dancing to a McDonalds commercial. The Carl's Jr ad is very funny but also terribly offensive. I think most if not all of Jack in the Box's commercial are funny, but when I'm hungry and I want to clog my arteries I do not stop to think about which commercials offended me. I want a Hot, Juicy, Tasty, Burger, and Carls Jr. has just that.
I found the commercial lame.  Not offensive. A little amusing, but not much.  However... I will go to Carls Jr. and order me one of those flat bun burgers! (So I guess the marketing worked in this case, eh?)  Lighten  up you crying babies!  Its just a dumb commercial.  I cant believe some of you wrote how "outraged!" you are. LOL.
I cannot believe this tasteless advertisement is on Angels Baseball games that play to young children, and considered wholesome.  If you want to complain, call Carls at 877-799-STAR, and vote with your $
My goodness that flat buns commercial was hilarious. butt minus...chuckle. Hell, even my girlfriend thought it was funny. Still, it doesn't make me want to go to Carl's Jr. any more than before (never been/never will).
lighten up! It sure got my attention!!!!  =)
It sure catches the eye, sex sells
what up fool's. Burgers are juicy and so is my momma son.
There is nothing "funny" about this commercial. There is a limit, and this one hits the mark. The Paris thing, I can get over. But, the situation between teacher and student is deplorable. I have a sense of humor, this did nothing for me. I little crass if you ask me!
There is NO such thing as bad publicity. Good for Carl JR's, they have an ad out there that is drawing attention to it. Very smart. It is a commerical, stop the crying, why is America so super sensitive to everything these days? If you dont like it, dont go there, when the ad appears, turn the channel. sex sells, another example, that is why they are a profitable company, they have a smart ad campagin. Deal with it.
indifference is the key to happiness, and not looking stupid.  Americans are all offended by every little thing that comes their way.  Thicker skin would be helpful to us all, but now I'm sure I just offended people with thin skin.  Now I just offended people with no skin!!!  You are all mindless idiots, who let incredibly insignificant issues blind you to your own demise.  peace out, foos.
I am a teacher who did not find this advertisement in the least offensive.  I thought it was funny and it sticks in your head.  I think society takes things much to literally and forget that the best thing ya can give a kid is the ability to laugh at the world. Lord knows it will give them numerous reasons to complain and be grumpy. Bottom line lighten up world we have a lot better things to worry about than how a company chooses to sell there product. In the meantime I will continue to see the humor of the ad which is what it was meant for...
Carl's Jr has always had lots of class, all of it third. Crappy burgers and now crappy ads.
These comments are ridiculous.  A bunch of uptight women and Bi-curious men complaining about an add that isn't targeted at them.  Pull the stick out and lighten up.  They hit their target audience dead on.  If you were offended, you weren't their target.  I'm sure they don't care what you think.
the wendys commercials are boring! on the other hand i think the carls jr ads are hilarious, everyone on here seems to be complaining about how disrespectful they are but im just wondering when everyone lost their sense of humor? LIGHTEN UP PEOPLE! .... or you could just CHANGE the channel.. just an idea :)
I found it very funny, if only because I can relate to "flat buns" and grew up with "Baby Got Back".  And as to the whole sexualizing the teacher topic, um, the actress playing the teacher doesn't look old enough to even be a student in the class.  Realism wasn't even in the discussion when they came up with this commercial.
I think that Mr. Carl's jr is rolling in his grave.
Anyone who eats at Carl's Jr doesn't have flat buns.
Okaaay, so this ad is targeted for young guys with raging hormones, and is aired primarily during sporting events.  Fine.  But what group was targeted when Carl's Jr. ads all had ooey, gooey, messes dripping all over the place?  Those were disgusting any way you looked at them.
I clicked the link for the ad, but the "Schooled" ad NOW on Carl's Jr. site does not feature the teacher...just the white rappers. Did they pull the original?
For the parents who don't want their children seeing these types of commercials:  why are your kids watching so much TV???  Jeez...  Our TV was hardly ever on when I was growing up because we were outside playing with friends or in the house using our minds creatively (Legos were such a blast!).  Sadly, this is something that our overweight youth just aren't doing anymore.

While I do find the commercials amusing, I don't usually eat at places like Carl's Jr. because of how unhealthy the food is (compared to a home cooked meal), but don't get me wrong - when I'm hungry and in a hurry, I'll get a burger from a fast food joint, regardless of their commercials!  Lighten up people, and learn to laugh a little.
I have to say, I think the commercial is giggle-worthy. I won't eat a Carl's Jr regardless of their commercials, but I thought it was cute.
The ad just got pulled and is edited on the Carls Jr. website so that the teacher is not in it. YouTube has the ad the post describes:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HooS1rtXDGk
Dont take the Carls Jr commercial as a personal attack. It is funny and has done its job by getting you to talk about it. ;-)
You can't see the humor? You whiners are BORING! It is funny and fits what is going on now. Carl's are funny, Jack's are funny, Sonic's are pretty good. I get more freaked out by the plastic faced king of Burger King's. Looks like a kid molester to me! How's that for a stereo type! Happy old man around kids ... child molester!
The commercial and marketing firm did what it set out to do; create buzz and have millions of people talk about how silly the commercial is.  So.....THAHNK YOU EVERYONE FOR PROMOTING this venue.
This comment doesnt have to do so much with the Carl's Jr. ad, but the Dairy Queen ad, I love that commercial, i thought it was funnny, and personnaly it made me want to try it even tho i hate waffle cones. I guess it just depends on ur age and sense of humor.
The advertising agency did it's job. Regardless of whether you like or dislike the add, it got everyone talking about Carl Jr's.
You are all way too serious.  This commercial is targeted at the adolescent boys who would make this type of commercial.  It is not a direct attempt to degrade educators.  They  just want the boys to buy burgers.  If you don't like it, don't watch it and don't go to Carl's.  You control your television and your wallet.
To Taylor, Salt Lake City, Utah:
"I'm sick of the scantly clad women that choose to be exploited by advertisers and getting boys, young men, and men heated up."

hmm... last time I checked out the chick in this ad was wearing a freaking dress suit! how is that scantily clad? I guess I would get in trouble at work because that is the type of outfit I wear!

I don't think the ad is even MEANT to get men all "heated-up", I think it is meant to make people laugh (ie: the parody, weird al-type song). But hey if you get heated up by flat buns thats cool too, just don't take your shame out on other people.

I LIKE FLAT BUNS.. and I can't deny!! :p

Here's MY problem with it--when I have The Today Show on in the morning and my two-year-old starts singing "Flat Buns...," I'm a little disturbed.  As a mother of young children, I don't really care what's shown on ESPN/Spike TV/whatever, but showing something like this when kids are likely to be watching is completely unacceptable.
Ny the wat theres 2 version of this ad running depending on the time of dau shown now

the day/afternoon one has the dancing part cut out... the new version was shown on the nfl games on cbs last sunday
