A funny thing happened on the way to getting dressed

In the newest ad for Levi’s 501 jeans, a guy opens up a box and takes out a new pair of jeans. As he pulls the pants on, the entire street below him magically rises into his apartment as well -- carrying with it an attractive stranger who happens to be standing in a nearby phone booth. The two exchange a meaningful look and walk off into the night, arms touching flirtatiously.

If you’re like a lot of people, you’ll immediately think: Wait, who uses a pay phone anymore? But what’s really likely to get people’s attention is that the stranger in the phone booth is a woman in one version of this ad and a man in another.

The gay version of the ad is currently airing only on the gay- and lesbian-themed Logo channel, although Levi Strauss & Co. said it does have plans to air it on other cable stations with both gay and straight audiences.

Levi’s has done some limited marketing to the gay community since the late 1990s. Still, Robert Cameron, the jeans maker’s vice president of marketing, said he’s actually struck by the fact that the apparel company didn’t make a bigger effort, like this one, sooner.

“I think what’s surprising is how long it’s taken us to get there,” Cameron said. “Just to put (a commercial) on a gay-targeted channel like Logo that actually reflects the people who are watching it shouldn’t be such a radical notion. It really shouldn’t be.”

It is surprising that, in 2007, there are still so few mainstream companies making commercials specifically aimed at a demographic -- gay men -- that is known to have significant discretionary spending power. But even as gay TV characters and public figures have gained more acceptance, plenty of companies have faced considerable backlash for supporting gay causes.

Levi’s move isn’t so groundbreaking that the company can be lauded for changing the world, or even substantially challenging the status quo. But it should be given credit for doing what companies are supposed to do -- recognizing a market with more profit potential, and going after it.

Hasn't Hanes been doing this for years with the Michael Jordan and Kevin Bacon as "the cute gay couple" commercial for years?

And it airs on all channels.

What's the hubbub?
Bravo Levis!!

To all those are homophobes, get a grip on life and be the upstanding, tolerant American you claim to be! Make this country proud of what we can do, not of what we don't understand, then hate it.
Great ad!!! Having the option to watch the straight or the gay ad, I opted for the gay ad. I'm not gay myself, I'm just open-minded. I think the ad overall is very clever, entertaining and even funny. Lighten up, people and share the planet.
I see nothing wrong with the commercials..I wonder how some of you would feel if you had a child that was gay? I didn't choose to have a gay son, but I will tell you that I couldn't love him any more than my (late) straight son. This commercial sure beats the heck out of some of those stupid beer commercials that seem to promote drinking!
Kudos to yet one more company to finally come into the present! It will only be a matter of time before the majority of bigots and close-minded people pass away and gay culture will be as acceptable as straight culture. Finally!
90%+ of the population is not gay.  I'm not going to get into why people become gay or not.  I'd be writing a book.  But it should only air on gay channels.  Come on and don't call me ignorant.  Enough is enough.  Heterosexual people are afraid to stand up to a handful of gay people?  What, its not a free country anymore?  I can’t speak my mind?  Apparently its only free for gay people now a days.  I have to be called ignorant when in fact the person who is calling me ignorant is ignorant.  Grow up and do some real research as to why most people become gay and then talk.  It should not air outside of the gay channel.  I love how they force this on us.  The media also does an excellent job in supporting them.  Sorry, but I'll never buy another pair of levis jeans again.
If you dont like the ad because of its content, youre phobic....and we all know why youre phobic.  If you do like the ad for its content, youre progressive....and we could all use a breath of fresh air.

Well done!
Hm.  I thought the ocean looked a little pink lately. :)
Showing gay commercials only on gay channels is ridiculous.  Gay people aren't restricted to only watching one or two channels, they're watching the same stupid channels everyone watches all the time, so they're entitled to be annoyed by lame commercials like this one during programming as much as anyone else.  Like other people here have mentioned, the idea is as dumb as keeping all "feminine" commercials on the "female channels" or all the "minority" commercials on BET and Telemundo.
The ad is really lame and timid.
I believe that levi has taken a chance here and a great chance at that, they are reaching out to everyone, every type of customer.  Good for levi to take a chance, its the truth people, there are gays, whites, black, hetro, and homo sexuals, poor and rich it what our society is.
Wow I can't believe how many people say they will not buy Levi's b/c gay people are wearing them. Keep it on the gay channel? I guess gay people should have their own water fountains too huh? Whats wrong with some people in this country.....God forbid two Jewish people wear Levi's in the next ad...
i think it is a great ad... it is fun to watch...
folks get over it. i am gay and had no choice in how i am. i think most folks who are afraid of the gays have something inside themselves they are afraid of.
if people only realized how many "straight" men who are married are out playing around with us gay gays.
I am shocked by the amount of myopic behavior demonstrated on this board.  And not just from those who way they'll stop buying Levis because of these ads; the same goes for the people who automatically assume all "right-wing bigots" (to quote several members) are in the same category.  Guess what?  You're all bigots in your own way.  Open your eyes, people.

And if a company decides to advertise to gays and its owners don't revolt, who cares?  They're allowed to do as they please with their own company, right?
It seems strange to me that the religious people would make such a big deal out of the gay commercial, but not the straight one. The guy & girl in the straight commercial are obviously experiencing lust for one another. I don't see him asking whether she has a personal relationship with Jesus Christ before he hooks up with her. Do you think they're heading to evening service, anyway, or to a bar? And the presumably gay guys (at least I assume they're gay. The commercial really isn't overt on that point) are walking down the street with their arms *gasp* BRUSHING against each other. Nothing against THAT in the Bible. This reminds me of the whole Gay Marriage debate - they say it's sinful for gays to get married & it will destroy our nation. But when has the religious community spoken out against straight people abusing marraige - like Brittany Spears' 36 hour marriage in Las Vegas, or people getting married to get legal residency, or shows like Who Wants to Marry a Millionaire. Just goes to show that the religious people in this country don't really care about defending "morality", they just want an excuse to practice bigotry & think that they're better than some group of "sinners".
Levi's has definately lost another customer here.

The continued pandering to an albeit vocal minority in this country has gotten out of hand.

Homosexuality is a choice.  Not a "natural state of being".  People are not just "born that way".

If that were the case, it would be biologically possible for two members of the same sex to reproduce. However, with the exception of certain types of flatworms and other single celled lifeforms, reproduction on this planet is geared to two sex reproduction.  This is true in all areas of nature, from flower and plants to the higher mammals.

Stop using poorly researched science to justify a life choice.  Stop shoving it down the throats of the rest of us, seeking acceptance for your choice.
You love to scream about "acceptance and equality", yet you show your innate hipocracy by refusing to accept the viewpoint of others that happen to disagree with you.  Should we start calling you "heterophobes"?

Remember, the gate swings both ways.

If you want to be a homosexual, fine.  Just don't expect the rest of us to throw you a parade for bringing out what should be kept behind closed doors.

I don't flaut my sexual acts or preferences in public, neither should you.  That includes the advertising world.

It's called mass marketing, Jerry from Cincincatti.

And the ad seems weird, but i like that it is not limiting the sex appeal of their jeans.  You will be wanted no matter who you want if you wear our pants.  And because of the gay/straight differences, everyone is talking about them.
It happens to be a good ad.  And as far as the comments seen here, there are a lot of bigots who'd rather that gays went back into the closets and live lies.

I don't wear Levi's jeans because they're too pricey and hard to find in my size.  However, were I to be able to find them in my size and at a reasonable price, I'd buy them.
Levis 501s were the gay standard for over 20 years, with many gay and lesbian wearers unwilling to wear any other brand or style. This tradition has waned with the younger generation. Perhaps the ad campaign will help Levis regain this lost market. I doubt Levis will feel the loss of a few homophobic buyers. Don't they all wear polyester anyway?
It is very interesting how people think gay people should remain segmented "show it on a gay channel etc" ... the comments on this blogg is very interesting... should all gay people then say the same about straight people television?  "OOOh they should only air that on a straight tv channel only"... like what? Guess we should ban other tv shows such as Will and Grace and so on....

People.... we are all the same, no matter how we drive our cars, work in our jobs oh and yes... even wear the same jeans.... grow up america for the rest of the world has!
How would you know which pair of jeans you are buying?
Hahahahaha.  If some of you would actually stop wearing jeans because *gasp* some gays wear them too, you really have a problem.  Please refrain from breeding and creating more people such as yourselves.  That's about as intelligent as not touching something after a girl did because "she has cooties".

Dear Levis: Mission Accomplished. Here are people buying jeans NOT because they are quality jeans, look good, feel good, or are durable. They are buying them simply because you chose to flatter their particular demographic.

I, for one, make my buying decisions on something more substantial than that. (And frankly, if putting on your jeans is going to destroy my house like that I think I'll pass! ;-) )

And to Gayle, who claimed "We're taking over!" I can only say "No wonder people are afraid of gays. People like you are likely the cause. I think most people are content to treat you like people and let you do your thing. But when you threaten to "take over" it implies that "doing your thing" is not good enough for you, that you have to force everyone else to act and think the way you want us to.

I don't have a problem with homosexuality as "a" life choice, but I do have a problem with making it "the" life choice. It seems more like you want revenge than acceptance.

By the way, am I the only one who sees the irony in calling anyone who is religious a bigot? Doesn't that seem just a little bigoted?

You want tolerance? Show some.
Well, if we all turn gay to gain popular approval... we won't be able to breed with each other.

Hmmm... human race dies of unwillingness to have sex.
WTF you ignorant people?! Gays have been buying Levi's forever. We may also wear the same underwear, deoderant and use the same tooth paste as you hetero's...We're human just like you. The products we buy and use do not determine our sexuality.
Gay or not Gay ...... It's all crazy.  I don't buy them because they are made in China.
Jeans are Jeans !! And if your ass looks good in them then Go for it ! Straight or gay !Maybe the next commerical should show a threesome walking away !! Now thats a novel idea !!
COME ON PEOPLE THIS IS THE 2000'S. QUIT BEING BIGOT'S..THIS IS SUPPOSE TO BE AMERICA...LET PEOPLE BE, THEY ARE NOT BOTHERING ANY OF YOU...
Are you kidding me? When did TV start having "gay" and "straight" channels? When are we going to catch up and realize that who you love and go home to at night has absolutely nothing to do with the state of the world. Having such a biggoted view of the world does nothing to solve real problems out there like poverty, homelessness, discrimination and hatred. If we could channel all the energy people put into hating a 30 second TV ad they've never seen on their own television and instead put it to good use, we might be able to actually make a real difference.
Either way, it's a stupid commercial.  The guy looks like he greased his hair with mayo or something...
I'm disgusted by the dissenters but I will raise a glass to those that stood up to defend this commercial.  When will people stop looking at gay like a disease that they could catch?  It has started, but some days it seems there will always be those that keep their minds closed to the ways of the world.

Saying that you will not buy them because of a marketing ad is like saying you won't order a steak because you don't like salad.  The ad isn't going to change the way the jeans fit you.

This isn't even about that anyway.  Levi's is marketing to a niche.  It's called business.  Gay people wear jeans just like straight people.  Their money is just as green.
Well, they've been saying all along that "being gay" comes from your genes.

In this case, Levi Jeans.
Look at all these ignorant responses. I love Levi's, along with my husband and son because of the way they fit. Choose to wear the jeans or NOT, because of the jeans, not the ads!! Don't be stupid people!!  Putting on a pair of jeans or watching a straight or gay ad will not turn gay people straight and vice versa.  Besides, we have bigger problems in this world we need to address!!
This creative ad did just what it was meant to do:   to provoke the human thought process; how sad it is to have an old "Humpty Dumpty" mentality in the year 2007.  Bravo to Levis, and bravo to all persons who wear, continue to wear, or will begin to wear their fine product.
I don't see what the big deal is. They don't touch. They don't even look at each other in an overtly romantic way. Most 8 year olds wouldn't even get it. Probably half the uncultured rural straight world wouldn't even get it. I think they should have kissed. That would have been really funny!!!
Good for them. Its about time.
I'll probably go out and buy some Levi's brand jeans very soon because of this ad!  Way to go, Levi's!
:)
Great ad! Abercrombie have been putting gay-erotic print ads for years. Levi's wants a piece of the action, and why not!
So gay people don't watch regular tv?
I see remarks about 'bible thumpers' being against homosexuality..well, I guess I'd be one of those, however its not my personal opinion..it's in the bible! Shame on Levi for lowering themselves to do a controversial ad like this one...more of a publicity stunt than anything else.
To all those who think the U.S. market is not ready for homoerotic advertising and will hurt sales in the straight market, I have only 2 words for you: Abercrombie & Fitch.

As a consumer and father of two teenaged boys, I hope this "commercial" which panders to gay interests will stay on the gay channel. I have always liked Lee Jeans better any way. Now I know I won't be buying Levis for myself or my kids.
After all this time amazes me as to how many narrow minded people can come up with.  This look like three people going out for the night.  Two guys and/or guy and girl.  The pants are the subject, not their orientation.
Pretty bad when levis need to stoop to homosexual level for a sale, what next, targeting the pornography buisness.
Deb in Kansas, you need to re-read the comment from the person that brought up the war.  Nowhere did they blame the war on homophobes.  Here's what that person said:  "It's just an ad to a ceratin demo...who cares. People.... our young men and women are being killed in a war that has no meaning. Get your priorities correct. Get mad about that not jeans!"

How are you getting blaming the war on homophobes from that?  It never ceases to amaze me how right-wingers misconstrue and cherry pick.

As for the ads, I haven't seen them, but good for them.  People shouldn't be so threatened by gay people.  It's NOT a choice!  Of all the gay people I've known in my life not one of them made a choice to be gay.  It's just who they are.
You know what I don't understand, when will walking next to a person of your same sex down the street become gay or offensive.  It doesn't say gay man on their shirts, they are not holding hands.  Without meaning top be disrespectful, how ignorant can someone be to jump to so many conclusions about a commercial.  I really don't get it.  By the way, no I am not gay. I am just a human being that believes that gay people are not an abomination, because as far as I know (and all you religious people can correct me if I am wrong) it states in your "great book" (I believe it was referenced in this site a couple of times) that God created men and women and I don't believe God makes mistakes.........or does he?
i can not believe what this world is comming to.
Everyone should read the comment from "I have no pants".  My husband used to wear Levi's until they outsourced to Mexico. Gay, straight, whatever, we live in America and look at our economy, people.  We have a lot more to worry about than gay/straight commercials, and to the person who said "What's next? Saturday morning cartoons?"  Advertising agencies plan for that sort of thing, trust me, I work in advertising. They would NEVER air in Saturday morning cartoons.
What would Jesus do?  That's the big question that hardly anyone answers correctly here.  Jesus would NOT toss Levi Strauss Co. out of the temple, because they are not in the temple.  They are out in the regular market.

Instead of hating the sin and loving the sinner, 99.9% of us hate the sinner, and the companies that market to the sinner.  The hypocrisy in organized religion is a huge problem and I believe this more than a decline in social values will lead to the eventual destruction of our great freedoms.

Your hypocrisy rings clear in your announcement to boycott.  I'd be willing to bet out of all the responses to boycott, only one of you will actually go through with it.  Those of you who don't buy Levi's anyways, ask yourself if you would boycott if it was something you truly loved, like Pepsi, 60 Minutes, NASCAR, NFL, or Budweiser.
A young gay professional here who says hats off to Levi's.  I admire a company and its leaders who understand lucrative business practice -- who strategically formulate a plan for keeping their bottom line heavy in the black -- and who have the vision and wherewithal to go for it!  As a young professional with a post graduate education, I consider the homophobic barks of discourse insolent and rather typical, and I find their small minded authors pitiful.  Climbing your way out of the dregs of societal ignorance via higher education will prove quite rewarding.
Throughout the Bible, homosexuality is wrong. It is not about being narrow-mined, conservative, politically correct or anything else. It is wrong. Levi's has lost a customer.
