A funny thing happened on the way to getting dressed

In the newest ad for Levi’s 501 jeans, a guy opens up a box and takes out a new pair of jeans. As he pulls the pants on, the entire street below him magically rises into his apartment as well -- carrying with it an attractive stranger who happens to be standing in a nearby phone booth. The two exchange a meaningful look and walk off into the night, arms touching flirtatiously.

If you’re like a lot of people, you’ll immediately think: Wait, who uses a pay phone anymore? But what’s really likely to get people’s attention is that the stranger in the phone booth is a woman in one version of this ad and a man in another.

The gay version of the ad is currently airing only on the gay- and lesbian-themed Logo channel, although Levi Strauss & Co. said it does have plans to air it on other cable stations with both gay and straight audiences.

Levi’s has done some limited marketing to the gay community since the late 1990s. Still, Robert Cameron, the jeans maker’s vice president of marketing, said he’s actually struck by the fact that the apparel company didn’t make a bigger effort, like this one, sooner.

“I think what’s surprising is how long it’s taken us to get there,” Cameron said. “Just to put (a commercial) on a gay-targeted channel like Logo that actually reflects the people who are watching it shouldn’t be such a radical notion. It really shouldn’t be.”

It is surprising that, in 2007, there are still so few mainstream companies making commercials specifically aimed at a demographic -- gay men -- that is known to have significant discretionary spending power. But even as gay TV characters and public figures have gained more acceptance, plenty of companies have faced considerable backlash for supporting gay causes.

Levi’s move isn’t so groundbreaking that the company can be lauded for changing the world, or even substantially challenging the status quo. But it should be given credit for doing what companies are supposed to do -- recognizing a market with more profit potential, and going after it.

I like this ad. Finally.
Don't air it on regular tv, and other cable channels. It should be kept on the gay channel. That's the whole point of having a gay channel. So gay people can watch their type of programming.
Looks like Levi's has just lost a customer...

Yet another chip taken out of the cement holding this country together.
Ugh! I, for one, will no longer purchase Levis for myself or my kids.
If you're a shareholder in this company (or any for that matter) you should want this commericial and others to be taregeted at gay audiences. Gay people are generally well educated and have a lot of disposable income - aren't ads supposed to target those who can buy the product? And if you were to refuse to buy Levis for your kids because of the gay ad, I certainly hope you keep a good eye on them at churhc ;)
I'm not sure I would consider ABC or NBC "straight" so why market something to 1 channel?  Ever hear of Will and Grace? Great ad, good for them.
Considering gay people make up around 10% of the US population (depending on which research you read) - same as left-handed people and black people - and like handedness or skin color, being gay is a trait one is born with, then why not show gay people, same as you'd show lefties or African-Americans??

People who have trouble dealing with the scientific fact that humans and other animals are all over the sexual orientation spectrum need to realize that religion (the basis for many prejudices) is a choice, unlike gayness. Boycott whoever you want, for whatever ignorant reason you want, but it won't change the fact that you are doing the same thing whites have done to blacks for centuries. Bigots then claimed their god said it was ok to treat black people as less than human. Bigots now says god tells them it's ok to do the same to gays. It ain't so.
Wonderful commercial. It's about time and for the commenters who will no longer be Levi's customers, good riddance. I gladly will continue purchasing Levi Jeans!!
To the ignorant Jane Doe from Warren OH,

So by your logic, feminine related ads should be shown on "women only" channels.

I'm a hetero male who watches regular TV and I don't need to see ads about "feminine itch" or "all day protection" for your period.  That should be on "Lifetime" or "Oxygen" channels so they can watch their type of programming.

Time for you to join the rest of us in the 21st century.
Both commercials are great, but I want to know when the guy put his shoes on.
I have never been a big fan of Levis, but I have to admit after hearing about the fact that Levi and Co are starting to admit that more than just Right-Wing bigots and foul-mouthed hypocrites wear their clothing, I am more inclined to consider purchasing the brand in the future.  Kudos, Levi.  Kudos.
As the proud mom of a gay son, Thank you Average Jane, for telling it like it is.
Bravo and touche to Joe. When will this world become a more tolerant society.
Both ads are great, yay for Levi's for finally stepping out.:-)
It is amazing what industries will do for a buck. The promotion of homosexuality is against nature and against God. No more Levi's for me!
Why all the argument? Let them do what they do. They are just trying to reach out to the gay community more. I happen to be gay but you won't ever catch me in a pair of Levis. I think that it is great that a company finally is trying to do something like this. All these other posts that are aparently from homophobes, GET A LIFE. There is nothing that you can do about it so why dont you just calm down and accept it. Like that idiot that said he/she will never buy levis again. Or Mr. Brian from Concord. Wake up and smell the coffee.
Thank you, Levi's! I will now be switching my discretionary spending to buying your jeans. As will my 15 year-old gay nephew.
I can't believe that some of you are concerned about boycotting Levi's because of an ad on TV. It's just an ad to a ceratin demo...who cares. People.... our young men and women are being killed in a war that has no meaning. Get your priorities correct. Get mad about that not jeans!
To Joe Reese,

No kidding! I'm a hetero female and I don't need to see ads about jock itch medications, either. We all end up seeing stuff that makes us go, "Eww!" And we all can choose to get over ourselves.

I thought both ads were stupid, but I like the idea of putting obviously gay couples in ads for everyday stuff. It's definitely about time.
Why can't they have a black man in the gay version of the ad?  Seems sort of racist to me.
LEVI'S WILL MAKE YOU GAY!!!!!!!]

(Fabulous)
I actually don't like the levi brand (they fit weird) but I applaud their efforts with these commercials.  Why not market to gay people?  It's about time!
Its about time.
I saw the straight ad and thought it was dumb.  But to hear they made a gay ad irks me.  I don't need Levis and they don't need my money.
I haven't bought a pair of Levi's in ages, but I think I will now.  Oh, and Average Jane... you ROCK.
The only people that have a problem with these ads are the ignorant people.  Certain people are afraid of such ads because they think by watching them or letting their kids watch them, it will turn them gay. Everyone is afraid of the unknown, so get over it and educate yourselves!!
My son loves Levis. He is very heterosexual. I can't imagine him suddenly switching brands-or sexuality-because of an ad.

Bravo to Levis!
I really dont see what the big fuss is about both commercials are good, I really dont see the "gay" one any different from the straight one except I get to look at Two hot looking guys at one time!!
If you boycott Levis for the Gay commercial then you are a hypocrite if you do not also boycott all companies with Gay ads: Subaru, Volkswagen, Jaguar, Absolute Vodka, Evian Water, Disney, Goodyear Tires, HBO, Showtime, the list goes on and on. We are taking over!

Two guys walking down the street together, what is wrong with that? I do not understand what the difference is with women holding hands, kissing, living together etc now that is acceptable. Go figure.

I find nothing wrong with the ads at all.  Go for it on all the stations.  Let the judgemental judge because as the good book states " let the one without cast the first stone" believe me there is no one with out sin.
Airing this Ad on the Gay/Lesbian channel...no problem whosoever.  Exposing our children to the gay version on other (straight) channels is completely inappropriate and a very slippery slope.  What's next, gay commercials during Saturday morning cartoons on ABC?  Come to think of it, maybe during Teletubbies after Tinky Winky is on..
This shouldn't be called an ad of the wierd...it should be called an ad of the enlightened.
Good going Levi & Co., it is amazing to me that there are still so many homophobics out there - that you would really change what you purchase because of a  commercial. Of course you will, because I find narrow minded people have narrow minded brains.
Go ahead and buy em, see how your son's like wearing "fag jeans", that should be fun in school.  Also, make sure to tell your well educated, wealthy gay friends to keep supporting a company that has not made their "American" jeans in America for many years now.  Pick up a pair and look at the tag, they are all made in Mexico and Japan, most likely by children in sweat shop type operations.  This is why I stopped buying them years ago.  What a fine company you all support.
Interesting article.  We all have different sensibilities based on things that we value.  Like a person who practices a homosexual lifestyle, my religious beliefs feel like they stem from something deeper than just a choice.  Whether they do or not cannot be empirically proven, yet.

We all have a tendency to become defensive when we feel like our values or beliefs are contradicted, or validated when we feel like they are marketed.  I am sure that this ad is a powerful feeling of validation for those in the homosexual community.  Conversely, I am sure it will make others with competing values very defensive.

I don’t see anything wrong with someone choosing to discontinue a business relationship with a company who markets things that are against their particular values anymore than I see nothing wrong with a consumer who buys something from a company that appears to share their personal values.

Having said that, it would probably be more prudent for Levi’s to restrict its homosexual oriented marketing campaign to programs or channels that would target a receptive audience.  To do otherwise would run the risk of alienating others with competing values.

Sex sells, but will homosexual depictions sell to heterosexuals?  That remains to be seen.
It's just a dumb commercial, who cares...
Big deal. I remember when mainstream advertising depicting African-Americans and Caucasians in intimate settings was declared immoral and indecent. Bigots will always find something to get upset about.
I believe Levi should air the gay version on gay channels only. I say this from a strictly marketing point of view. I believe they likely gain points with the gay community by producing such an ad, but will likely lose business among the fundamental christian groups if they air it on television not directly aimed at the gay community. So, by airing it on Logo for example, only, they would likely get the greatest overall benefit.
I want to know what the biggots would like gay men to wear if not Levi jeans...would they prefer that gay men run amuck through the streets naked??? Man you know bigotry has gone too far when people are actually trying to prevent gay's from buying clothes.
I will no longer buy levis.  Nor will I watch any show that is sponsored by levis. This commercial doesn't even make sense when you watch it.  It looks like the guy putting on the pants is like, "oh no, there's a dude in my room, let me pull my pants back down so he goes away.  Then all of the sudden they're walking off together but not flirtatiously.  It just looks dumb.  I didn't like the version with the girl much either but at least it makes sense.  And, if people are born gay then the ocean is made up of kool aid!
As a shareholder I'm sure this will be discussed at the next SH meeting. Very poor decision to pander to immoral behavior.
My hats off to Levis for a GREAT commercial.  We should see more commercials like this from other companies.
Everyone is free to express their opinions, but some of these comments are hurtful not only to gays and lesbians, but to their families and friends.
I really can't understand how people can claim they live in the LAND OF THE FREE, when they want to take away rights and privileges of FELLOW AMERICANS.  If ignorant people and bigots don't appreciate the FREEDOM we have then tell them to move to another country.
I had seen both commercials weeks ago on myspace. As with anything, you can't please everyone. The fact that people will stop buying jeans because its geared to gays is just complete nonsense! WOW! I bet you didn't know that both Bud and Miller also have ads geared towards GLBT people. Better start boycotting them too! As a gay male I purchase clothing based on the product, not what the ad is. If that's was the case and GLBT people shopped based on ads...many of us would be walking around naked. Thank you to Levi's for making the bold move and coming out of the closet and for joining the times. Too bad everyone else can't follow the same.
Rock on!!! Both are great commercials.

Straight Ad Exec.
I am disgusted by the number of people who have made homophobic comments in this thread. Just because you might happen to see gay people on a television ad won't somehow "turn you gay". This isn't a dirty or inappropriate ad; it won't turn your children into homosexuals either! If anything, it will open children's eyes to the fact that people are different and should be loved and accepted.
I cant believe Levis would lower themselves to such an ad.If in fact 10% of the population is gay , why in the world would you spend a penny trying to reach them? 90% sounds much better to me.Now if people think if you wear Levis you are gay , I suppose I will quit wearing them myself.
I thought both men were hot and I don't care if they are gay or straight.  Please people, get a life!
Anchorage, Alaska
GOOD FOR LEVIS. if whomever does not like the commercial, turn the channel....or go complain to the fcc.
Average Jane, I wish more people shared your mentality! Also, for all the Bible-thumpers out there: "Whosover shall cast the first stone....."
The attack on people that disagree with homosexuality is very funny.  You want people to freely accept gays, but it is against many religions.  Name calling and anger is not helping your cause.  I am not stupid, or hateful.  I just have a different moral set.  What I have read so far is people disagreeing with the commerecial and choosing to boycott an item.  None of the people against called anyone a bad name or were hateful, just honest to their convictions, but were attacked and called hateful names.  The best comment is the person that brings up the war, and blamees homophobes for the war.  Are you the anti-Phelps????  He blames the war on gays, you blame it on homophobes.  How about we blame it on terrorism.  You know radical islam???  Anyways I will no longer purchase levi jeans.  They are out of style anyways, and are even worse now that Wal-Mart carries them.
It still amazes me as to how many narrow minded self-righteous morons there are in this country. These are the same fools that put Bush into office because he was going to ammend the constitution to discriminate, even though the constitution  is supposed to give rights, not take them away. I can't wait until god judges these people for their actions.
