BMW's car-less swipe at the competition

It’s no secret that many automakers have been struggling of late. Perhaps the biggest sign of these woes was the recent split of DaimlerChrysler, the much-vaunted, but ultimately failed, marriage between the makers of Mercedes and Chrysler cars.

It’s not the only problem marriage in an industry that has been rife with acquisitions -- and divorces -- in recent years. BMW has largely stayed out of that fray, which is a fact they aren’t shy of using as a selling point.

BMW

“To be better than the competition, you can’t have them as your parent company,” a recent BMW print ad boasts.

The simple text ad is striking not just for its message, but also because there’s no car in it. Patrick McKenna, manager of marketing communications for BMW of North America, said it’s part of a broader strategy to use the story of BMW, as well as the product itself, to sell cars.

“We think that companies that are owned by parent companies have to compromise in some way or form,” he said.

It’s worth noting that BMW Group is a parent in its own right -- it owns the Mini and Rolls-Royce brands. But the company clearly sees that as different from the complicated partnerships many of its competitors have entered into. Another ad in the same series matches BMW’s upscale competitors, such as Audi and Lexus, with their parent companies.

McKenna insists the ads aren’t intended as pot shots.

“It has more to do with BMW being proud than throwing stones at the competition,” he said.

Nevertheless, it’s hard not to think of DaimlerChrysler’s unraveling when you see the ads. Does that make a person want to buy a BMW? Well, that’s a trickier question.

This is great. If I were their target market, I would definitely consider buying a BMW. Alas, I am not.
I've always thought that BMW stood out for that very fact. I'm just waiting for the 1 series in a diesel to hit the states.
I like the ad.  The reason I own a BMW is that it's instantly recognizable and it isn't a re-badging of another brand. A Lexus is just a re-badged Toyota.  They both look the same and you can hardly tell them apart.
Parent Company or not, Lexus is still not just one of the most luxurious automobiles cars made, but the most reliable car on the planet as well.  I guess you have to choose your parents carefully........
Its just smoke and mirrors.  All cars use gas and therefore polute the atmosphere we depend on for life. Some of the worlds top scientists think we are on the Titanic which is taking on water and yet we keep piling on more and more of every thing. How can we possible pat ourselves on the back over a silly ad.
Well, as my BMW, Volkswagen, and Audi owning coworkers would attest, Daimler (Mercedes/Chrylser) is not the only German Automaker with serious quality control issues...they seem to be driving loaners more than the cars they actually bought these days.
If I were producing cars that look like theirs, I'd leave the pictures out too.
There's a reason they call it "the ultimate driving machine." It's not just the performance, it also doesn't look like your grandfather's Buick with a Lexus nameplate on it.
Ads aside, I have never heard of a Mercedes Benz being the poor mans BMW...
BMWs are nothing but overpriced gas guzzling behemoths. Won't mess with one.
Ads have never made me buy anything. They have, at best, sparked my interest in a product. What makes me want to buy a car or any product is true quality and value for the money spent. BMWs definitely fall into that category and they are great looking cars as well. I love driving them. But they are not the only great cars out there in the market place. Car manufacturers: Forget all ads and give us usable and true consumer-friendly information. Save your marketing budgets for that!
snob appeal notwithstanding, its been said that bmw stands for break my wallet.....
I've been sold on BMW for over 10 years. There isn't a finer drivers car on the market. Nothing comes close. And despite other's opinions, my car gets 30 or more mpg w/plenty of performance. I wouldn't exactly call that gas guzzling behemoths from the land of SUV drivers and big hair!
No but they made engines for Nazi Germany durring ww2
BMW is, and always will be in a class of it's own. Engineering, design and performance are far superior to others in the industry. You get what you pay for, and that is why BMW is the "Ultimate Driving Machine". Most mergers in the industry are a result of weak management.
I drive an Audi because the equivilent BMW's trunk wasn't big enough to carry much after all that excess baggage associated with the BMW name was thrown in there.  Nice enough car but...
as usual bmw falsly represents their product. as this article states bmw is owner of 2 other auto lines. this is a regular occurance for bmw. bmw japan regularly false advertises. they advertise that all their service reps have the same training as they do in germany. that is complete bs. call the bmw toll free hotline in japan and they will tell you that they do not require any japanese dealers in japan to meet any standards for thier service reps. my interviews with the service reps in japan confirm that they do not have the same training that the factory reps in germany have. well whats cookin? false advertising and its well done. i could go on and on about their blatant false advertising. cars with a much worse than average repair record. no thanks bmw
A will say this, I have a M5 and Z8. Say fancy things, fancy words, fancy commercials with marbles, use man with handsome voice and wine glasses, but these cars stood on their own with or without picture.. period...they eat other cars lunch(ok breakfast and dinner).
BMW is always cutting edge and progressive when it comes to advertising. BMW and Range Roover are in a league of their own when it comes to advertisting.
As an Infiniti owner for the past 12 years owning a BMW is out of the question. Never a day in the shop for any problems at all. An little by little BMW and Mercedes owners are moving over.
In my opinion BMW is a great car yet I wouldn't say it's the finest drivers car on the market.  There are several that could vie for that honor.  Lexus and others do have parents but coming from the Japanese market (Acura, Infiniti as well) these cars are very well made.  They may have parents but their reputations speak for themselves.

I just can't imagine spending a ton of money on a car that doesn't even offer TILT STEERING!!
...and for those of us that really care about our carbon footprint, they're the only manufacturer that also make motorcycles (and for their euro market) and scooters as well. my bmw motorcycle with its 40+ aggregate miles per gallon and zero emissions kinda puts the lie to that 'gas guzzling behemoth' thing. doncha think, doyle?  ;-)

they may not always get things right on the first go round, but their financial independance and enthusiam mean they're one of the few companies that are constantly trying new things to advance the state of transportation art.
As the article states, their "child companies" could not run the same ad, so its sort of hollow...  I am sure some of the old chaps turning out Rolls Royce would agree.
truthfully speaking, BMW would sell you the most  luxurious and fuel efficient lawn mower if thats what made them rich. They can spare me the wit. Economy rules over exclusivity any day of the week. Beemers are well groomed machines, but my six cylinder SUV can get good gas mileage, transport the family plus groceries, school books, equipment at the same time in a blizzard on a very middle class budget. Can I get a Witness?
Nothing else but a BMW will do. Who would want to drive anything else. To sit in the cockpit of anything else is humm derpressing.
Marty Williams comments are spot on. I have never had a BMW that did not deliever 30+ MPG at today's highway speeds. I am also a fan of Honda and Toyota products and would never discourage someone from owning them. On the flip side, BMWs are expensive to maintain, but you do not pay till after the free maintenance for the first 50K miles. Average that in for the first 100/150K and it is probably a wash, costwise and a savings compared to MB. I suspect that Ken's friends who are driving BMW loaners are not doing it for quality issues, but while their vehicles are getting free dealer maintenance. And I also suspect that the ad was directed more at Daimler and VW than any other parent company, the German mind at work if you will.
And as a matter of disclosure, my current 2 vehicles are a 330 Ci and a Pathfinder SE.
Bmw's are reliable ... since i got my driver's licence in germany i wheezed in one , and have always since. No bias, but they perform much better ... i now drive a 5 series wagon and i get all the looks!
Bavarians are good engineers .. go TU Munchen!!
Speaking of ads, as a satisfied BMW owner, I'm insulted that Hyundai would compare themselves to a BMW!! Sure, you can buy a Hyundai for less, but you still wont have the "ultimate driving machine" experience which, folks, is what their really selling (no picture required) :-)
BMW, Lexus both great autos!  Yes, Lexus is without question more luxurious. If you wanna' sit back, crusie, and twirl the steering wheel with your little finger, that's the car to own.  If you wanna' put both hands on the wheel and feel the driving experience, then buy a BMW.  Two totally different animals.
I love all the talk about how great your bmws, toyotas, and other foreign cars are, but explain to your kids , relatives and friends that they won't be able to get a decent paying job because traitors like yourselves are buying foreign products at the expense of the United States.
As an aircraft technician, I appreciate excellent engineering.  I owned a BMW, put over 140,000 miles on it, did my own maintenance which only consisted of brakes once, timing belt and water pump replacement.  It looked as good as it did when I bought it new, and only sold it because it doesn't hold four children and two adults.  We 'outgrew' it.  I'll own another some day.  Great machines.
as a current bmw owner both of mine get well over 30mpg, and to have them serviced at the intervals set by the cars computer ends up far less than maintaining my z-71 pick-up.by far they are the smoothest riding, handling, and performing car a person could own. my current beemers are a z3 which i've gotten 35mpg and the other is an m3 which gets 33mpg.
I have owned many foreign autos in the last 15 years as well as several american autos. While I have never owned a BMW I have driven several different models. They are wonderful driving cars that can be expensive to maintain. I currently drive an 07 Ford Fusion that equals the foreign competition in reliability and provides a very good driving experience. This is nothing more than an advertising ploy as BMW is a parent company for other auto companies (Mini Cooper). Be intelligent consumers and shop the market across different companies and model lines if you are not about the prestige factor you can fine a fine quality auto that is comparable in real world driving to many higher level name plates. I will put my Fusion with heated seats, leather, moonroof & power everything up against a 3 series BMW any day. There is not a "real world" 20,000.00 dollar diffence between these cars if you take out the prestige factor.
Parent companies can be positive in pushing forward new technologies.  Toyota, for example, can use the large base of its Camry to invest in hybrid research for inclusion on Lexuses.  I'm still waiting for my 6-series hybrid.
J Haigh:

You explain to your kids how the UAW and every other union is willing to cannibalize and bankrupt the hands that feed them so the guy who tightens bolt #6 for 8 hours a day can make 150 grand a year just because he's managed not to fall off his stool long enough to get seniority. Then I'll apologize for foreign cars, (built in plants located in the US and populated with American workers)in my driveway.
BMW and Mercedes are both very fuel efficient... in Europe. When visiting America, one notices that all the autos are the "sport" editions with extra horsepower at times more than 100. Why is that?

Yes, it is true that DaimlerChrystler had a quality problem. Much of this is due to a shifting and growing economy in the European Union and the need to force cuts in the Stuttgart factory. Buy selling off Chrystler, Mercedes-Benz is free to make the necessary changes to remain competitive and focus efforts where deserved.

I do not think that most people need to worry about buying foreign brands for long. The dollar hit an all-time low yesterday against the Euro.
I've been riding a BMW for years.  I didn't know they made cars, too!
A "REAL" BMW only needs 2 wheels.

I'll keep my 83 R100RS - Life doesn't get any better than that!!!!!
Well,
I think its brilliant strategy. In advertising and marketing, it is important to remember to think outside the box of tradition.

I am bias though... I owned a 1986 325es e30 with the sweet ETA moter made for US customers.  That car lasted forever... When I was in financial ruins, the car stayed strong.

When a US manufacturer can get me a car that can go 15k between oil changes (supported by used oil analysis), 45-50 mpg at 75-80 mph, and last for 2-300k miles, I will consider owning one again.  I currently have a 00 impala, and it handles like crap.  My prism felt like a tin box, and my escort was a junker.  My import handles well, doesn't need any oil (full synthetic and can run renewable fuels made from algea), and will meet or beat every requirement I listed above.  Also, mitsubishi makes most of the cars it sells here ... here, mainly in normal, IL.  Same goes with honda and toyota.  My honda bike was fully assembled here in the USA, with parts that were made overseas.  I dont consider myself a traitor, I consider myself a consumer.  When the quality, economy (name one that can get 40 mpg or can run on 100 percent renewable fuel, no American diesel can get 40 mpg, and no flexfuel car can run on 100 percent ethonol) and handeling improve on domestic brands, I will buy them again.
BMW.  There is no substitute.
J Haigh, BMW makes the X3 and X5 and Z4 in South Carolina.   I'm pretty sure they don't fly workers in from Germany every day.   GM makes most of their parts in Mexico.   That's just a tad bit south of Detroit.   If you think your "American" car was built in America you are sorely mistaken.

I'm on my second BMW, and they are ALL I will drive assuming I'm still lucky enough to be able to afford one in the future.   Driving anything else feels like driving a bus.
BMW (Bring your Money With you) to the service center.  My BMW has been serviced 20+ times in the first 1 1/2 years of ownership.  The car is a pleasure to drive.  The electronics are nothing but junk!!!
You missed the point; Mergers and "Partnerships" can ultimately ruin perfectly good companies, all in the name of profit margin.

It has happened so many times in this country since I was in high school (30 years ago) and look what it has done to us.

Buying forign cars does not make you anti-American, it is no fault of ours that horrid trade agreements and profiteering brought the quality of the American auto industry to it's knees.
I personally owned 3 BMW'S, and I can tell you this..each one had terriblle brakes, the absolute worst air conditioning and all rusted early in ownership. My 2 sons owned them also and had the same
experiences.  NEVER AGAIN!!!!
There is a reason every ambitious car tries to copy BMW...I have always loved them best for this reason.

An FYI for Al Gore's little weirdo lackey, above, who is trying to talk BS when we're talking about cars:  From what I understand, BMW was the first to be testing hydrogen cars - cars that could be both fast AND efficient.  But that's another thing so cool about BMW - you won't catch them bragging about it.
I have owned or leased 3 Hondas, 3 Mazdas, 2 Mercedes, one Toyota, 2 Pontiacs, 2 Buicks, 1 Chevy, 1 Subaru, 1 Landrover,  and 3 BMWs.  All have been reasonably good serviceable vehicles with the exception of one of the Buicks--a total piece of junk. Of all the aforementioned vehicles, only one has been a total delight--red 87 BMW 325 which rides, drives, and handles like a dream, looks in almost showroom condition, and is still parked in my driveway!!
