Diet Mountain Dew: Puppet master?

Apparently if you’re a Manhattanite and you’re in the mood for a window puppet show, you’re out luck -- they’re illegal.

It’s unlikely NYPD takes the threat so seriously that they would order a SWAT team in to put a stop to it. (Actually, according to New York City code, you’d be subject to a $25 fine and/or 30 days in prison if you were so bold as to use your window for “any performance of puppet or other figures, ballet or other dancing, comedy, farce, show with moving figures, play or other entertainment.”)

Nevertheless, it’s entertaining to watch the makers of diet Mountain Dew, in a recent ad,  envision a scenario in which New York’s finest had nothing better to do than shut down errant puppeteers.

Mountain Dew

The “surprising fact” ad is meant to set you up for this punchline – supposedly also surprising -- diet Mountain Dew is a delicious treat, without all the calories of that full-sugar variety.

The puppets under attack are likely to get the attention of diet Mountain Dew’s core intended audience, men ages 18 to 39. But it’s not clear whether, after a laugh, they’ll make a connection between smart-aleck puppets and diet soda.

Marisol Tamaro, senior marketing manager for the Mountain Dew brand, said diet Mountain Dew makers Pepisco Inc. are so pleased with the ad that they’ve ordered another two centered on other surprising facts, which are scheduled to air in 2008.

Puppets make me laugh.
I liked the one with the ferret in the Jason mask armed with a chainsaw. Made me actually think that I should try Diet Mountain Dew to repay them for the entertaining spot.
I'm going to try diet dew just for the plain and simple fact I laughed my a** off. Well done!
Having noticed any of these adds yet as I genrally tune out during adds. In fact I have not even read the article. I just want to say that I put my vote in for  REGULAR MOUNTAIN DEW!!! Diet drinks are yucky!!!!!
Puppets hanging out a window, drinking a dew and being shot at by New York's finest would make me laugh even more :)
I've seen the commercials but honestly couldn't have told you what was being advertised before reading this article. *starts window puppet show in more tolerant Indiana*  :)
I'd like to see more of the puppets. I think Mountain Dew should come with an offer to "get your own puppets! as seen on TV!"  I still have a 1980's Lemon Joy lemon doll. "Caramba! What a mess!"
Another surprising law. It's illegal to shoot Sasquatch in Skamania County in Washington. Wonder if they could use that?
Love the concept. Hilarious. Will never do the Dew. Looks like pee. Tastes horrid.
i thught it was stupid, at first i didnt know what it was about, stupid stupid
if there were more window puppet shows in nyc, maybe it would turn into a kinder, gentler place. thank you for at least trying, mt. dew.
love the puppet
I think it was weird, and they probably could have come up with something better..( at least I hope they could have ).. but for some weird reason my sister liked it..but she has a different sense of humor then I do.. she watches " South Park".
There is another message here (other than "drink Diet Dew): ninja-black clad SWAT teams, dispatched on the flimsiest of pretense, are not abnormal, are in fact quite normal. Get used to it. You live in a police state now.
I never realized window puppet shows were illegal in NYC. Now I know. I'd never drink or eat anything diet(we'll find out in 10 years it causes cancer) but thought this commercial was cute. The ferret commercial was better though, what actually happened to the couple in the woods? Did they make it? Did the ferret win?
